¹फारपूर्वी शास्त्यांच्या अमदानीत एकदा दुष्काळ पडला आणि अन्नधान्याची टंचाई निर्माण झाली. तेव्हा अलीमलेख नावाचा गृहस्थ आपली बायको आणि दोन मुले यांच्यासह यहूदा बेथलेहेम सोडून मवाब या डोंगराळ प्रांतात राहायला आला.

¹It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

²त्याच्या बायकोचे नाव नामी आणि मुलांची नावे महलोन आणि खिल्योन अशी होती. हे लोक बेथलेहेम यहूदातील एफ्राथा कुळातील होते. मवाबात येऊन ते राहू लागले.

²The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

³पुढे अलीमलेख वारला आणि त्याची बायको नामी व दोन मुले मागे राहिली.

³Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

⁴नामीच्या मुलांनी मवाबातील दोन मुलींशी लग्ने केली. एकाच्या बायकोचे होते अर्पा आणि दुसरीचे नाव रूथ. जवळपास दहा वर्ष ते तिथे राहिले.

⁴They took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years.

⁵आणि महलोन व खिल्योन दोघेही मरण पावले.नामी तिचा नवरा आणि मुलं यांच्यावाचून एकटीच राहिली.

⁵Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.

⁶यहूदात आता दुष्काळ राहिलेला नाही परमेश्वर आपल्या लोकांच्या मदतीला धावून आला आहे, आणि त्याने त्यांना अन्न पुरवलेले आहे असे मवाबात नामीच्या कानालर आले. तेव्हा तिने घरी परत जायचे ठरवले तिच्या सुनाही तिच्याबरोबर जायला तयार झल्या.

⁶Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. had visited his people in giving them bread.

⁷तव्हा त्या ज्या ठिकाणी राहात होत्या ते ठिकाण सोडून त्या यहूदाला परत जायला निघाल्या.

⁷She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

⁸तेव्हा नामीने आपल्या सुनांना सांगितले,” तुम्ही आपल्या माहेरी परत जा. मला आणि माझ्या मुलांना तुम्ही प्रेम दिलेत. तुम्ही जशा आमच्याशी दयाळू आणि प्रेमळ राहिलात तसाच परमेश्वर ही तुमच्याशी राहो.

⁸Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

⁹परमेश्वर कृपेने तुम्हाला नवरा, सुखाचे घरदार मिळो” एवढे म्हणून नामीने त्यांचे चुंबन घेतले आणि तिघीना रडू कोसळले.

⁹Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

¹⁰“आम्हाला तुमच्याबरोबर आणि तुमच्याच लोकात यायचे आहे” असे त्या दोघी नामीला म्हणू लागल्या.

¹⁰They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”

¹¹पण नामी त्यांना म्हणाली,” नाही मुलींनो तुम्ही आपापल्या घरी जा. माझ्याबरोबर येऊन तरी काय फायदा? मी ही अशी. माझ्या पोटी आणखी मुलगे नाहीत.नाहीतर तुम्ही त्यांच्याशी लग्न केले असते.

¹¹Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

¹²तेव्ही तुम्ही परत गेलेले बरे. पुन्हा लग्न करायचेही माझे वय राहिले नाही आणि अजून माझे लग्न झाले तेरी त्याचा तुम्हाला काय उपयोग? मला अगदी या घटकेला दिवस राहून दोन मुले झाली तरी काय फायदा?

¹²Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;

¹³ते वाढून लग्नाचे होई पर्यंत तुम्हाला थांबावे लागेल. पतिप्राप्तीसाठी मी तुम्हाला एवढे थांबवून ठेवू शकत नाही. माझ्या मनाला त्यामुळे फार यातना होतील. आधीच मी खूप सोसले आहे.परमेश्वराने माझी खूप परीक्षा पाहिली आहे,

¹³would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me.”

¹⁴पुन्हा एकदा त्यांना रडू फुटले, मग अर्पाने चुंबन घेऊन नामीचा निरोप घेतला. पण रूथ मात्र तिला बिलगली.

¹⁴They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth joined with her.

¹⁵नामी तिला म्हणाली,” तुझी जाऊ बघ कशी आपल्या लोकांत,आपल्या देवाकडे गेली, तूही तसेच केले पाहिजेस,.

¹⁵She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”

¹⁶पण रूथ हटून बसली आणि म्हणाली,”तुम्हाला सोडून जायची माझ्यावर जबरदस्ती करू नका. मला माहेरी जायला लावू नका.मी तुमच्याबरोबर येईन. जिथे तुम्ही जाल तिथे मी येईन. जिथे तुम्ही पथारी टाकाल तिथेच मीही पडेन. तुमचे लोक ते माझे लोक. तुमचा देव तो माझा देव.

¹⁶Ruth said, “Don’t entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” my God;

¹⁷तुम्ही जिथे मराल, तिथेच मी ही मरेन. जिथे तुम्हाला तिथेच मला पुरावे. हा शब्द मी पाळला नाही तर परमेश्वराने मला खूशाल शिक्षा करावी. आता आपली ताटातूट फक्त मरणानेच.”

¹⁷where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me.”

¹⁸रूथचा आपल्या बरोबरच यायचा निधोर आहे हे पाहिल्यावर नामीने तिचे मन वळवायचा प्रयत्न सोडून दिला.

¹⁸When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.

¹⁹त्या दोघी मजल दरमजल करत बेथलेहेमपर्यंत आल्या. त्यांना पाहून लोकांना एकदम भरून आले. “ही नामी की काय” असे ते म्हणू लागले.

¹⁹So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”

²⁰पण नामी म्हणाली, “मला नामी (आनंदी) का म्हणता? ‘मारा’(म्हणजे कष्टी दु:खी)म्हणा. सर्वशक्तिमान देवाने मला फार दु:ख दिले आहे.

²⁰She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

²¹“येथून मी गेले तेव्हा सर्व काही माझ्याकडे पुष्कळ होते.आता परमेश्वराने मला रिकाम्या हाताने परत आणले आहे. परमेश्वरानेच मला दु:खी केले. तेव्हा मला ‘आनंदी’ कशाला म्हणता? सर्वशक्तिमान देवाने मला फार वाईट दिवस दाखवले.”

²¹I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty; why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

²²अशा प्रकारे सातूच्या पिकाच्या हंगामाच्या सुरूवातीला नामी आणि तिची मवाबातील सून रूथ या दोघी मवाबातून बेथलेहेम यहूदा येथे परतल्या.

²²So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
