1मरेका थोरै झिंगाले उत्तम सुगन्धलाई पनि दुर्गन्धपूर्ण बनाउँदछन्। यसरी नै सानो मूर्खताले सम्पूर्ण बुद्धि र सम्मान नष्ट गर्दछ।
1Dead flies cause a perfumer`s perfume To send forth a stink; The precious by reason of wisdom — By reason of honour — a little folly!
2ज्ञानीको विचारले उसलाई ठिक बाटोमा हिंडाउँदछ। तर मूर्खको विचारले उसलाई गलत बाटोमा हिँडाउँछ।
2The heart of the wise [is] at his right hand, And the heart of a fool at his left.
3मूर्ख बाटोमा हिडदाखेरि पनि आफ्नो मूर्खता दर्शाउँछ र हरेकले ऊ मूर्ख हो भन्ने कुरा जान्दछन्।
3And also, when he that is a fool Is walking in the way, his heart is lacking, And he hath said to every one, `He [is] a fool.`
4मालिक रिसाए भन्दैमा आफ्नो काम नछोड। यदि तिमी शान्त र सहायक बनिरह्यौ भने तिमीले ठूला-ठूला गल्तीहरू सुधार्न सक्ने छौ।
4If the spirit of the ruler go up against thee, Thy place leave not, For yielding quieteth great sinners.
5यहाँ केही भिन्नै कुराहरू पनि छन् जुन मैले आफ्नो जीवनमा देखेको छु। अनि यो न्याय संगत पनि छैन। यो त्यस्तो भूल हो जुन शासकहरूबाट हुन्छ।
5There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error that goeth out from the ruler,
6मूर्खहरूलाई महत्वपूर्ण ओहोदा दिइन्छ, जहाँ धनी मानिसहरूले यस्ता काम पाउंछन् जसको कुनै महत्व हुँदैन।
6He hath set the fool in many high places, And the rich in a low place do sit.
7नोकर बन्नु पर्नेहरू घोडामा चढेर हिंडेको पनि देखेको छु, जहाँ शासक बन्नु पर्नेहरू नोकर जस्ता भई तिनैका छेउछाऊ पैदलै हिंडिरहेका हुन्छन्।
7I have seen servants on horses, And princes walking as servants on the earth.
8आफूले खनेको खाडलमा आफै पर्न सक्छन। पर्खाल भत्काउनेलाई साँपले डस्न पनि सक्छ।
8Whoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And whoso is breaking a hedge, a serpent biteth him.
9ढुङ्गाहरू त्यो मानिसमाथि झर्ने सक्छ जसले त्यसलाई चलाउँछ अनि जसले रूख काटेर ढाल्छ उसलाई चोट लाग्न सक्छ।
9Whoso is removing stones is grieved by them, Whoso is cleaving trees endangered by them.
10तर बुद्धिले हर काम सुगम हुँन्छ। भुत्ते छुरीले काट्न कठीन पर्छ। तर कसैले छुरीलाई उध्याएर काटे त्यही सजिलो काम हुँन्छ ज्ञान त्यस्तै हो।
10If the iron hath been blunt, And he the face hath not sharpened, Then doth he increase strength, And wisdom [is] advantageous to make right.
11लट्ठ्याउन अघिनै साँपले डस्यो भने सपेरालाई केही फाइदा हुँदैन।
11If the serpent biteth without enchantment, Then there is no advantage to a master of the tongue.
12ज्ञानीका शब्दहरूले प्रशांसित तुल्याउँछन्, परन्तु मूर्खका शब्दहरूले विनाश गराउँछन।
12Words of the mouth of the wise [are] gracious, And the lips of a fool swallow him up.
13मूर्ख मानिसले मूर्खताबाट कुरा थाल्छ अन्तमा पागल कुरामा टुग्याउँदछ।
13The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] folly, And the latter end of his mouth [Is] mischievous madness.
14मूर्खले धेरै कुराहरू गर्छ तर कसैलाई पनि थाहा हुदैन कि भविष्यमा के घट्छ। कसैले पनि भन्न सक्दैन भविष्यमा हुनेवाला छ।
14And the fool multiplieth words: `Man knoweth not that which is, And that which is after him, who doth declare to him?`
15एउटा मूर्ख आफ्नै घरको बाटो पत्ता लाउनमा साह्रै बुद्धु बनिनु सक्छ, यसर्थ जुनकाम गर्ने चेष्टा गर्छ त्यसले उसलाई थकित बनाउँछ।
15The labour of the foolish wearieth him, In that he hath not known to go unto the city.
16देशको निम्ति यो खुबै खराब हो जुन देशको राजा बालक जस्तो छ। अनि कुनै देशको निम्ति पनि उत्तिकै खराब छ यो जहाँको राजा सारा समय खानैमा व्यस्त रहन्छ।
16Wo to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a youth, And thy princes do eat in the morning.
17तर जुन देशको राजा एउटा महान परिवारबाट आएको हुन्छ त्यस देशलाई खुबै असल हुन्छ। अनि भूमिलाई पनि फाइदा हुन्छ जब ती शासकहरूले ज्यादा खाँदैन अथवा मतुवा हुँदैनन्।
17Happy art thou, O land, When thy king [is] a son of freemen, And thy princes do eat in due season, For might, and not for drunkenness.
18अल्छेको घरमा पानी चुहिन थाल्छ र टाल्दै नटाली सबै छाना झर्छ।
18By slothfulness is the wall brought low, And by idleness of the hands doth the house drop.
19मानिस भोजनमा आनन्द लिन्छन् अनि दाखरसले जीवन अझै आनन्दित बनाउँछ। तर धनले नै सबै समस्या सुल्झाउँदछ।
19For mirth they are making a feast, And wine maketh life joyful, And the silver answereth with all.
20राजाको निन्दा नगर अनि महानुभाव र सम्पन्न मानिसहरूको बारेमा पनि निन्दा नगर। चाहे तिमी आफ्नो घरमा एक्लै किन नहोऊ, नराम्रो कुरै नगर। किन? किन कि कुनै एउटा सानो चरो उडेर गएर तिमीले भनेका सबै कुरा तिनीहरूलाई सुनाइदेला।
20Even in thy mind a king revile not, And in the inner parts of thy bed-chamber Revile not the rich: For a fowl of the heavens causeth the voice to go, And a possessor of wings declareth the word.
