¹एकदिन याकूबले लाबानको छोराहरू कुरा गरिरहेको सुन्यो। तिनीहरूले भने, “हाम्रा बाबुसित भएको सम्पत्तिहरू याकूबले सबै लग्यो। याकूब धनी मानिस भयो। अनि उनले हाम्रा बाबुको सबै सम्पत्तिहरू लग्यो।”

¹And he heareth the words of Laban`s sons, saying, `Jacob hath taken all that our father hath; yea, from that which our father hath, he hath made all this honour;`

²याकूबले तब महस्‌स गरे लाबानसित उसको सम्बन्ध निश्चय नै पहिले जस्तो छैन।

²and Jacob seeth the face of Laban, and lo, it is not with him as heretofore.

³परमप्रभुले याकूबलाई भन्नुभयो, “तिम्रा पुर्खाहरू जहाँ थिए, त्यही तिम्रो भूमिमा जाऊ म तिमीसंग हुनेछु।”

³And Jehovah saith unto Jacob, `Turn back unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I am with thee.`

⁴यसर्थ याकूबले राहेल र लेआलाई भेडा बाख्राहरू राख्ने खेतमा भेट्नु भन्यो।

⁴And Jacob sendeth and calleth for Rachel and for Leah to the field unto his flock;

⁵राहेल र लेआलाई याकूबले भने, “मैले थाहा पाएँ तिम्रा बाबु मसित रिसाएका छन्। तिनी मसित संधै पहिले जस्तो राम्रो कुरा गर्दैनन्।

⁵and saith to them, `I am beholding your father`s face — that it is not towards me as heretofore, and the God of my father hath been with me,

⁶तिमीहरू दुवैजनालाई थाहा छ तिम्रा बाबुको निम्ति त्यति मेहनत गरें जति मैले गर्न सक्थें।

⁶and ye — ye have known that with all my power I have served your father,

⁷तर तिमीहरूका बाबुले मलाई धोका दिए। उनले मेरो ज्याला दश पल्ट बद्ली गरे। तर यी सबै समयमा परमेश्वरले मलाई उनको धोकाबाट बचाउनु भयो।

⁷and your father hath played upon me, and hath changed my hire ten times; and God hath not suffered him to do evil with me.

⁸“एक पल्ट लाबानले भने, ‘तिमीले थोप्ले जति सबै बाख्राहरू राख्न सक्छौ, यही तिम्रो ज्याला हुनेछ।’ जब उनले त्यसो भने, तब सबै पशुहरूले सिंगारे पाठाहरू बियाए। यसर्थ ती सबै मेरा थिए। तर लाबानले भने, ‘म थोप्ले बाख्राहरू राख्छु। सबै सिंगारे बाख्राहरू तिमी राख्न सक्छौ। त्यही तिम्रो ज्याला हुनेछ।’ तिनले त्यसो भनेपछि सबै पशुहरूले सिंगारे पाठाहरू बियाए।

⁸`If he say thus: The speckled are thy hire, then bare all the flock speckled ones; and if he say thus: The ring-straked are thy hire, then bare all the flock ring-straked;

⁹यसर्थ परमेश्वरले सबै पशुहरू तिम्रो बाबुबाट लिएर मलाई दिनु भएको छ।

⁹and God taketh away the substance of your father, and doth give to me.

¹⁰“पशुहरू जब प्रजनन क्रीडामा थिए मैले एउटा सपना देखें। मैले देखें ती सबै नर पशुहरू जो प्रजनन क्रीडामा लागेका थिए तिनीहरू मात्र थोप्ले र सिंगारे थिए।

¹⁰`And it cometh to pass at the time of the flock conceiving, that I lift up mine eyes and see in a dream, and lo, the he-goats, which are going up on the flock, [are] ring-straked, speckled, and grisled;

¹¹परमेश्वरका स्वर्गदूतले सपनामा मसित कुरा गरे। स्वर्गदूतले भने, “याकूब”। “मैले भनें, हजुर।’

¹¹and the messenger of God saith unto me in the dream, Jacob, and I say, Here [am] I.

¹²“त्यो स्वर्गदूतले भने, ‘हेर, खाली थोप्ले र सिंगारे बाख्राहरू मात्र प्रजनन क्रीडामा छन्। म यस्तै गराउँदै छु। लाबान तिमीसित सबै भूल काम गरिरहेका छन्। सबै नयाँ जन्मेका पाठा-पाठीहरू तिम्रा हुन् भनेर म यस्तो गरिरहेको छु।

¹²`And He saith, Lift up, I pray thee, thine eyes, and see — all the he-goats which are going up on the flock [are] ring-straked, speckled, and grisled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to thee;

¹³म तिमी कहाँ बेतेलमा आउने परमेश्वर हुँ। त्यस ठाउँमा तिमीले एउटा वेदी बनायौ। तिमीले त्यस वेदीमा भद्राक्षको तेलले अभिषेक गर्यौ अनि त्यस ठाउँमा तिमीले मसित भाकल गरेका थियौ। अब म चाहन्छु तिमी आफ्नो भूमि जहाँ तिमी जन्मेका थियो त्यहाँ जान तयार होऊ।”‘

¹³I [am] the God of Bethel where thou hast anointed a standing pillar, where thou hast vowed a vow to me; now, arise, go out from this land, and turn back unto the land of thy birth.`

¹⁴And Rachel answereth — Leah also — and saith to him, `Have we yet a portion and inheritance in the house of our father?

¹⁵have we not been reckoned strangers to him? for he hath sold us, and he also utterly consumeth our money;

¹⁶परमेश्वरले हाम्रो बाबुबाट सबै सम्पति लिनु भयो अनि अहिले त्यो हाम्रो र हाम्रो नानीहरूको निम्ति भयो। यसर्थ तिमीले त्यही गर्नु पर्छ, जुन परमेश्वरले गर्नु भन्नु हुन्छ।”

¹⁶for all the wealth which God hath taken away from our father, it [is] ours, and our children`s; and now, all that God hath said unto thee — do.`

¹⁷यसर्थ याकूब आफ्नो यात्राको निम्ति तयार भयो। उनले आफ्नो पत्नीहरू र नानीहरूलाई ऊँटमाथि राख्यो।

¹⁷And Jacob riseth, and lifteth up his sons and his wives on the camels,

¹⁸तब तिनीहरूले कनान भूमिमा जहाँ उसको बाबु बस्ने गर्दथिए त्यहाँबाट फर्कनको निम्ति यात्रा शुरू गरे। याकूब आफ्ना सबै पशुहरु तिनीहरूको अघि अघि हिंड्‌यो। पद्दनराममा हुँदा जे जति तिनले हासिल गरेका थिए प्रत्येक चीज उनले लग्यो।

¹⁸and leadeth all his cattle, and all his substance which he hath acquired, the cattle of his getting, which he hath acquired in Padan-Aram, to go unto Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.

¹⁹त्यस समय लाबान आफ्नो भेडाहरूको ऊन काट्न गएका थिए। जब ती गएका थिए, राहेल उनको घरमा गइन् अनि आफ्नो बाबुको झुटो देवता चोरेर ल्याईन्।

¹⁹And Laban hath gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stealeth the teraphim which her father hath;

²⁰याकूबले अरामी लाबानलाई धोका दिए। उनले आफू जाने कुरो लाबानलाई भनेनन्।

²⁰and Jacob deceiveth the heart of Laban the Aramaean, because he hath not declared to him that he is fleeing;

²¹याकूबले आफ्नो जहान परिवार र आफ्ना सबै चीज बीजहरू लग्यो अनि चाँडै हिंड्‌यो। तिनीहरूले यूफ्रेटिस नदी पार गरी गिलादको पहाडी भूमितिर यात्रा गरे।

²¹and he fleeth, he and all that he hath, and riseth, and passeth over the River, and setteth his face [toward] the mount of Gilead.

²²तीन दिनपछि मात्र याकूब भागेको कुरा लाबानले थाहा पाए।

²²And it is told to Laban on the third day that Jacob hath fled,

²³3यसैकारण लाबानले आफ्ना मानिसहरू भेला गरे अनि याकूबलाई पछ्याउन शुरू गरे। सात दिनपछि लाबानले याकूबलाई गिलादको पहाडी क्षेत्रमा भेटे।

²³and he taketh his brethren with him, and pursueth after him a journey of seven days, and overtaketh him in the mount of Gilead.

²⁴त्यस रात परमेश्वर लाबानको सपनामा देखा पर्नु भयो। परमेश्वरले भन्नुभयो, “होशियार हुनु, याकूबलाई जे भन्छौ प्रत्येक शब्दको निम्ति होशियार हुनु।”

²⁴And God cometh in unto Laban the Aramaean in a dream of the night, and saith to him, `Take heed to thyself lest thou speak with Jacob from good unto evil.`

²⁵अर्को दिन बिहानै लाबानले याकूबलाई पक्रिए। याकूबले पर्वतमाथि आफ्नो पाल लगाएको थियो। यसर्थ लाबान अनि उनका मानिसहरूले पनि गिलादको पहाडी ठाउँमा पाल हाले।

²⁵And Laban overtaketh Jacob; and Jacob hath fixed his tent in the mount; and Laban with his brethren have fixed [theirs] in the mount of Gilead.

²⁶लाबानले याकूबलाई भने, “मलाई किन धोका दिइस्? मेरो छोरीहरूलाई तैंले लडाइँमा कैदी जस्तो बनाएर किन लगिस्?

²⁶And Laban saith to Jacob, `What hast thou done that thou dost deceive my heart, and lead away my daughters as captives of the sword?

²⁷मलाई नभनी किन भागिस्? यदि मलाई भनेको भए म भोज गराउने थिएँ। त्यहाँ नाच गान हुनेथियो।

²⁷Why hast thou hidden thyself to flee, and deceivest me, and hast not declared to me, and I send thee away with joy and with songs, with tabret and with harp,

²⁸तैंले मेरा नातिहरूलाई म्वाइँ खान अनि छोरीहरूलाई बिदाइगर्न पनि दिइनस्। यो सब गरेर तँ साह्रै मूर्ख भइस्।

²⁸and hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? — now thou hast acted foolishly in doing [so];

²⁹वास्तवमा तँलाईं चोट पुर्याउने शक्ति मसँग छ, तर हिजो राती तेरो बाबुको परमेश्वर मेरो सपनामा देखा पर्नु भयो। कुनै प्रकारले पनि तँलाईं चोट नपुर्याउनु भनी मलाई चेतावनी दिनु भयो।

²⁹my hand is to God to do evil with you, but the God of your father yesternight hath spoken unto me, saying, Take heed to thyself from speaking with Jacob from good unto evil.

³⁰म जान्दछु तँ तेरो घर जान चाहन्छस र त्यसकै निम्ति तँ हिंडिस्। तर मेरो घरबाट देवताहरू किन चोरिस्?”

³⁰`And now, thou hast certainly gone, because thou hast been very desirous for the house of thy father; why hast thou stolen my gods?`

³¹याकूबले भन्यो, “म डराएको हुनाले तिमीलाई नभनी म हिंडे। मैले सोचे तिमीले तिम्री छोरीहरू मबाट खोस्नेछौ,

³¹And Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, `Because I was afraid, for I said, Lest thou take violently away thy daughters from me;

³²तर मैले तिम्रा देवताहरू चोरेको छैन। यहाँ मसित हुनेहरू जोसित तिम्रो देवताहरू पाइन्छन् त्यस मानिसको हत्या गरिनेछ। तिम्रा मानिसहरू मेरा गवाहीहरू हुनेछन्। तिमीले तिम्रा चीजहरू तलाश गर्न सक्छौ र यदि तिम्रो केही पाइयो भने लान सक्छौ।” (राहेलले लाबानको घरबाट देवताहरू चोरी ल्याएको याकूबलाई थाहा थिएन)।

³²with whomsoever thou findest thy gods — he doth not live; before our brethren discern for thyself what [is] with me, and take to thyself:` and Jacob hath not known that Rachel hath stolen them.

³³लाबान याकूबको छाउनीभित्र गएर खोज-तलाश गरे। उनले पहिले याकूबको अनि लेआको पालको तलाश गरे। त्यसपछि दुइ कमारी आइमाईहरू बसेका पालको तलाश गरे। तर ती पालहरूमा उनले खोजेका देवताहरू पाइएनन्। त्यसपछि लाबान राहेलको पालमा गए।

³³And Laban goeth into the tent of Jacob, and into the tent of Leah, and into the tent of the two handmaidens, and hath not found; and he goeth out from the tent of Leah, and goeth into the tent of Rachel.

³⁴राहेलले ती देवताहरू ऊँटको जीनमुनि लुकाएकी थिइन् अनि त्यसैमाथि बसेकी थिइन्। लाबानले सम्पूर्ण पाल चहारे र उनले देवताहरू भेट्न सकेनन्।

³⁴And Rachel hath taken the teraphim, and putteth them in the furniture of the camel, and sitteth upon them; and Laban feeleth all the tent, and hath not found;

³⁵अनि राहेलले आफ्नो बाबुसित भनिन्, “बुबा मसित नरिसाउनु है, म तपाईंको अघि उभिन असमर्थ छु कारण अहिले मेरो मासिक धर्म चलिरहेको छ।” यसर्थ लाबानले पालमा खोजी गरे तर उनले देवताहरू कही पाएनन्।

³⁵and she saith unto her father, `Let it not be displeasing in the eyes of my lord that I am not able to rise at thy presence, for the way of women [is] on me;` and he searcheth, and hath not found the teraphim.

³⁶तब याकूब अत्यन्तै क्रोधित भएर भने, “मैले के कसुर गरेको छु? मैले कुन कानून भङ्ग गरेको छु? मलाई खेद्ने र रोक्ने अधिकार तिमीले कसरी पायौ?

³⁶And it is displeasing to Jacob, and he striveth with Laban; and Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, `What [is] my transgression? what my sin, that thou hast burned after me?

³⁷मेरो माल समान जे जति छ, सब तलाश गर्यौ तर कहीं केही पाएनौ, जो तिम्रो हो। यदि तिमीले केही पायौ भने तब मलाई देखाऊ।’ यहाँ राख मेरा मानिसहरूले देख्न सकून। मेरा मानिसहरूले निर्णय लिन सकून् हामी माझ को सही छ।

³⁷for thou hast felt all my vessels: what hast thou found of all the vessels of thy house? set here before my brethren, and thy brethren, and they decide between us both.

³⁸मैले बीस वर्ष तिम्रो सेवा गरें। मेरो सेवाकालमा तिम्रो कुनै पनि भेडी र अरू बाख्रीको गर्भपात भएन। अनि मैले तपाईंका भेडोहरूबाट कुनैलाई खाइनँ।

³⁸`These twenty years I [am] with thee: thy ewes and thy she-goats have not miscarried, and the rams of thy flock I have not eaten;

³⁹जहिले पनि जंङ्गली जनावरले कुनै भेडा अनि बाख्रा खाए, त्यो जंङ्गली जनावारले मारेको भेडा अथवा बाख्रको अवशेष मात्रै तिमीकहाँ कहिल्यै ल्याईन। म सँधै तिमीले मलाई मागेको पूरा दाम तिरें। म दिन रात लुटिएको थिएँ।

³⁹the torn I have not brought in unto thee — I, I repay it — from my hand thou dost seek it; I have been deceived by day, and I have been deceived by night;

⁴⁰दिउँसोको घामले मेरो शक्ति नष्ट गर्यो अनि रातको चिसोले निद्रा लग्यो।

⁴⁰I have been [thus]: in the day consumed me hath drought, and frost by night, and wander doth my sleep from mine eyes.

⁴¹बीस वर्षसम्म कमारा झैं तिम्रो सेवा गरें। पहिलो चौध वर्ष तिम्री दुइवटी छोरीहरूको निम्ति अनि पछिको छ वर्ष तिम्रो वस्तुहरू पाउनको निम्ति खटें। अनि त्यस समयमा तिमीले मेरो ज्याला दश पल्ट हेरफेर गर्यौ।

⁴¹`This [is] to me twenty years in thy house: I have served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy flock; and thou changest my hire ten times;

⁴²तर मेरा पुर्खाहरूका परमेश्वर, अब्राहामका परमेश्वर अनि इसहाकको परमेश्वरको डर मसित थियो। यदि परमेश्वर मसित नहुनु भएको भए तिमीले मलाई रित्तो हात फर्काइ दिनेथ्यौ। मैले भोगेको कष्ट परमेश्वरले देख्नु भयो, मैले गरेको काम परमेश्वरले देख्नु भयो, अनि हिजो राती परमेश्वरले प्रमाणित गर्नु भयो कि म सही छु।”

⁴²unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac, had been for me, surely now empty thou hadst sent me away; mine affliction and the labour of my hands hath God seen, and reproveth yesternight.`

⁴³लाबानले याकूबलाई भने, “यी स्त्रीहरू मेरी छोरीहरू हुन्। यी नानीहरू मेरा हुन्। अनि यी पशुहरू सब मेरा हुन्। यहाँ तिमी जे पनि देख्छौ सबै मेरो हुन्। तर म मेरी छोरीहरू र नानीहरूको विषयमा केही गर्न सक्तिनँ।

⁴³And Laban answereth and saith unto Jacob, `The daughters [are] my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the flock my flock, and all that thou art seeing [is] mine; and to my daughters — what do I to these to-day, or to their sons whom they have born?

⁴⁴यसर्थ म तिमीसित एक सम्झौता गर्न तयार छु। हामीबीच सम्झौता भएको प्रमाणको रूपमा ढुङ्गाको एउटा थुप्रो बनाऊ।”

⁴⁴and now, come, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and it hath been for a witness between me and thee.`

⁴⁵उनले सम्झौता गरेको हो भनी देखाउन याकूबले एउटा ठूलो ढुङ्गा ल्याएर त्यहाँ राख्यो।

⁴⁵And Jacob taketh a stone, and lifteth it up [for] a standing pillar;

⁴⁶उनले आफ्नो मानिसहरूलाई केही ढुङ्गाहरू ल्याएर थुपार्न लगायो। तब तिनीहरूले त्यो ढुङ्गाको थुप्रो नजिक बसेर खाए।

⁴⁶and Jacob saith to his brethren, `Gather stones,` and they take stones, and make a heap; and they eat there on the heap;

⁴⁷लाबानले त्यस ठाउँको नाउँ “यर्गसहदूता” राखे। तर याकूबले त्यस ठाउँको नाउँ गलेद राख्यो।

⁴⁷and Laban calleth it Jegar-Sahadutha; and Jacob hath called it Galeed.

⁴⁸लाबानले याकूबलाई भने, “यो ढुङ्गाको थुप्रोले हामी दुवैलाई हामीबीचको ‘सम्झौता’ सम्झना गराउनमा सहायता गर्नेछ।” यस कारण उसले त्यस ठाँउको नाउँ गलेद राख्यो।

⁴⁸And Laban saith, `This heap [is] witness between me and thee to-day;` therefore hath he called its name Galeed;

⁴⁹लाबानले भने, “हामी एक अर्कामा छुट्टीदा परमेश्वरले हामीलाई हेरून्।” यसकारण त्यस खाँमोको नाउँ मिस्पा राख्यो।

⁴⁹Mizpah also, for he said, `Jehovah doth watch between me and thee, for we are hidden one from another;

⁵⁰त्यपछि लाबानले भने, “यदि मेरी छोरीहरूलाई कतै चोट पार्यौ भने, याद राख, परमेश्वरले तिमीलाई सजाय दिनु हुनेछ। यदि तिमीले अर्की आइमाई विवाह गरे, याद राख परमेश्वरले हेरि रहनु भएको छ।

⁵⁰if thou afflict my daughters, or take wives beside my daughters — there is no man with us — see, God [is] witness between me and thee.`

⁵¹यहाँ यी ढुङ्गाहरू छन् जसले बताउछन् हामीबीच सम्झौता भएको छ।

⁵¹And Laban saith to Jacob, `Lo, this heap, and lo, the standing pillar which I have cast between me and thee;

⁵²ढुङ्गाहरूको थुप्रो र विशेष ढुङ्गाहरूले हामीलाई आफ्नो संन्धि सम्झना गराउन सहायता पुर्याउँछ। तिमीसित लड्न यस ढुङ्गाको पल्लो पटि म कहिल्यै जाने छैन र त्यसरी नै मसित लड्नु तिमी कहिल्यै यो ढुङ्गाबाट यता अघि आउने छैनौं।

⁵²this heap [is] witness, and the standing pillar [is] witness, that I do not pass over this heap unto thee, and that thou dost not pass over this heap and this standing pillar unto me — for evil;

⁵³यदि हामीले यो सम्झौता भङ्ग गर्यौं भने अब्राहामका परमेश्वर, नाहोरका परमेश्वर र उनीहरूको पुर्खाहरूका परमेश्वरले हाम्रो न्याय गर्नुहुनेछ।” याकूबका बाबु इसहाकले परमेश्वरलाई “भय” नाउँले बोलाए। यसर्थ याकूबले सम्झौतामा त्यो नाउँ प्रयोग गरे।

⁵³the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, doth judge between us — the God of their father,` and Jacob sweareth by the Fear of his father Isaac.

⁵⁴त्यपछि याकूबले एउटा पशु मार्यो र पहाडमा बलिदान स्वरूपमा चढायो अनि उनले आफ्नो पुरूष मानिसहरूलाई भोजमा भाग लिन निम्तो दियो। खाना शेष भएपछि तिनीहरूले त्यस रात त्यही पर्वतमा बिताए।

⁵⁴And Jacob sacrificeth a sacrifice in the mount, and calleth to his brethren to eat bread, and they eat bread, and lodge in the mount;

⁵⁵अर्को दिन बिहानै लाबानले आफ्नो नाति-नातिनीहरूलाई म्वाइँ खाए अनि छोरीहरूलाई विदा दिए। उनले तिनीहरूलाई आशीर्वाद दिए अनि घरतिर फर्किए।

⁵⁵and Laban riseth early in the morning, and kisseth his sons and his daughters, and blesseth them; and Laban goeth on, and turneth back to his place.
