¹Ypperstepresten sa da: Er dette sant?

¹And the high priest said, Are these things then so?

²Han svarte: Brødre og fedre! Hør på mig: Herlighetens Gud åpenbarte sig for vår far Abraham mens han var i Mesopotamia, før han hadde bosatt sig i Karan,

²And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

³og sa til ham: Dra ut fra ditt land og fra din slekt, og gå til det land som jeg vil vise dig!

³and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee.

⁴Så drog han ut fra kaldeernes land og bosatte sig i Karan. Og derfra lot Gud ham efter farens død flytte til dette land som I nu bor i;

⁴Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which *ye* now dwell.

⁵men han gav ham ikke arvelodd der, enn ikke en fotsbredd; og han lovte å gi ham det til eie, og hans ætt efter ham, enda han ikke hadde barn.

⁵And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child.

⁶Og Gud talte således: Hans ætt skal bo i utlendighet i et fremmed land, og de skal holde den i trældom og mishandle den i fire hundre år;

⁶And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat [them] four hundred years;

⁷og det folk som de skal træle under, vil jeg dømme, sa Gud, og derefter skal de dra ut derfra og tjene mig på dette sted.

⁷and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will *I* judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place.

⁸Og han gav ham omskjærelsens pakt; og så fikk han sønnen Isak, og omskar ham på den åttende dag, og Isak fikk sønnen Jakob, og Jakob blev far til de tolv patriarker.

⁸And he gave to him [the] covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.

⁹Og patriarkene bar avind mot Josef og solgte ham til Egypten; og Gud var med ham

⁹And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him,

¹⁰og fridde ham ut av alle hans trengsler, og gav ham nåde og visdom for Faraos, egypterkongens øine; og han satte ham til høvding over Egypten og hele sitt hus.

¹⁰and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.

¹¹Så kom det hungersnød over hele Egyptens land og Kana'an, og stor trengsel, og våre fedre fant ikke føde.

¹¹But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.

¹²Men da Jakob fikk høre at det var korn i Egypten, sendte han våre fedre dit første gang;

¹²But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first;

¹³og annen gang blev Josef gjenkjent av sine brødre, og Josefs byrd kom til Faraos kunnskap.

¹³and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.

¹⁴Da sendte Josef bud og kalte til sig sin far Jakob og hele sin slekt, fem og sytti sjeler.

¹⁴And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls.

¹⁵Så drog Jakob ned til Egypten, og han døde, han og våre fedre,

¹⁵And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,

¹⁶og de blev ført til Sikem og lagt i den grav som Abraham kjøpte for en kjøpesum i sølv av Hemors barn i Sikem.

¹⁶and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem.

¹⁷Efter som nu tiden nærmet sig da det løfte skulde opfylles som Gud hadde gitt Abraham, tok folket til og blev mannsterkt i Egypten,

¹⁷But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁸inntil det fremstod en annen konge over Egypten, som ikke kjente Josef;

¹⁸until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph.

¹⁹han fór med svik mot vårt folk, og ved mishandling tvang han våre fedre til å sette sine nyfødte barn ut, så de ikke skulde holdes i live.

¹⁹*He* dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.

²⁰På den tid blev Moses født, og han var fager for Gud; han blev i tre måneder fostret i sin fars hus,

²⁰In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.

²¹og da han var blitt utsatt, tok Faraos datter ham op, og fostret ham og tok ham i sønns sted.

²¹And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son.

²²Og Moses blev oplært i all egypternes visdom, og han var mektig i ord og gjerninger.

²²And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

²³Men da han var blitt firti år gammel, fikk han i sinne å se til sine brødre, Israels barn,

²³And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;

²⁴og da han så en lide urett, kom han ham til hjelp og hevnet den som blev mishandlet, og slo egypteren ihjel.

²⁴and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.

²⁵Han tenkte da at hans brødre skulde forstå at Gud gav dem frelse ved hans hånd; men de forstod det ikke.

²⁵For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.

²⁶Den næste dag kom han til dem mens de trettet, og han formante dem til å holde fred, han sa: I menn! I er brødre; hvorfor gjør I hverandre urett?

²⁶And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, *Ye* are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?

²⁷Men han som gjorde sin næste urett, støtte ham fra sig og sa: Hvem har satt dig til høvding og dommer over oss?

²⁷But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?

²⁸Vil du kanskje slå mig ihjel, som du igår slo ihjel egypteren?

²⁸Dost *thou* wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?

²⁹Men Moses flyktet for dette ords skyld, og blev en utlending i Midians land og fikk der to sønner.

²⁹And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.

³⁰Og da firti år var til ende, åpenbarte en engel sig for ham i berget Sinais ørken i en brennende tornebusk.

³⁰And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.

³¹Da Moses så det, undret han sig over synet; men da han gikk bort for å se på det, kom en røst fra Herren:

³¹And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord,

³²Jeg er dine fedres Gud, Abrahams og Isaks og Jakobs Gud. Men Moses skalv av redsel, og vågde ikke å se på det.

³²*I* am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it].

³³Og Herren sa til ham: Løs skoene av dine føtter! for det sted du står på, er hellig jord.

³³And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.

³⁴Jeg har grant sett hvor mitt folk blir mishandlet i Egypten, og deres sukk har jeg hørt, og jeg er steget ned for å utfri dem. Og nu, kom, la mig sende dig til Egypten!

³⁴I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.

³⁵Denne Moses som de fornektet, idet de sa: Hvem har satt dig til høvding og dommer? ham sendte Gud til å være både høvding og redningsmann ved den engels hånd som åpenbarte sig for ham i tornebusken.

³⁵This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

³⁶Han var den som førte dem ut, idet han gjorde undergjerninger og tegn i Egyptens land og i det Røde Hav og i ørkenen i firti år.

³⁶*He* led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁷Han er den Moses som sa til Israels barn: En profet, likesom mig, skal Gud opreise eder av eders brødre.

³⁷This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear].

³⁸Han er den som i menigheten i ørkenen var med den engel som talte til ham på Sinai berg, og med våre fedre, han som mottok levende ord for å gi oss dem.

³⁸This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us;

³⁹Ham vilde våre fedre ikke være lydige, de støtte ham fra sig, og vendte sig i sitt hjerte til Egypten, og de sa til Aron:

³⁹to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,

⁴⁰Gjør oss guder som kan dra foran oss! for denne Moses som førte oss ut av Egyptens land vi vet ikke hvad det er blitt av ham.

⁴⁰saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him.

⁴¹Og de gjorde en kalv i hine dager og bar frem offer til avgudsbilledet, og de gledet sig over sine henders verk.

⁴¹And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

⁴²Men Gud vendte sig bort, og overgav dem til å dyrke himmelens hær, som skrevet er i profetenes bok: Israels hus! gav I mig vel slaktoffer og andre offer i firti år i ørkenen?

⁴²But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

⁴³Nei, I bar med eder Moloks telt og guden Remfans stjerne, de billeder som I gjorde for å tilbede dem, og jeg vil flytte eder bort hinsides Babylon.

⁴³Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your] god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.

⁴⁴Våre fedre hadde i ørkenen vidnesbyrdets telt, således som den som talte til Moses, bød ham å gjøre det efter det forbillede han hadde sett;

⁴⁴Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;

⁴⁵which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whom God drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David;

⁴⁶Han fant nåde hos Gud, og bad om at han måtte finne et bosted for Jakobs Gud.

⁴⁶who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;

⁴⁷Men Salomo bygget ham et hus.

⁴⁷but Solomon built him a house.

⁴⁸Men den Høieste bor ikke i hus som er gjort med hender, således som profeten sier:

⁴⁸But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet,

⁴⁹Himmelen er min trone, og jorden en skammel for mine føtter; hvad hus vil I bygge mig, sier Herren, eller hvor er det sted jeg skal hvile på?

⁴⁹The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest?

⁵⁰Har ikke min hånd gjort alt dette?

⁵⁰has not my hand made all these things?

⁵¹I hårde halser og uomskårne på hjerte og ører! I står alltid den Hellige Ånd imot, som eders fedre, således også I.

⁵¹O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, *ye* do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, *ye* also.

⁵²Hvem av profetene forfulgte ikke eders fedre? De drepte dem som forut forkynte at den rettferdige skulde komme, han som I nu har forrådt og myrdet,

⁵²Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom *ye* have now become deliverers up and murderers!

⁵³I som mottok loven gitt ved engler og ikke har holdt den!

⁵³who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it].

⁵⁴Men da de hørte dette, stakk det dem i deres hjerter, og de skar tenner mot ham.

⁵⁴And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.

⁵⁵Men han var full av den Hellige Ånd og skuet ufravendt op mot himmelen, og han så Guds herlighet, og Jesus stå ved Guds høire hånd,

⁵⁵But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,

⁵⁶og han sa: Nu ser jeg himlene åpne, og Menneskesønnen stå ved Guds høire hånd!

⁵⁶and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.

⁵⁷Da skrek de med høi røst og holdt for sine ører, og stormet alle som en inn på ham

⁵⁷And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;

⁵⁸og drev ham ut av byen og stenet ham; og vidnene la sine klær av sig ved en ung manns føtter som hette Saulus.

⁵⁸and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.

⁵⁹Og de stenet Stefanus, mens han bad og sa: Herre Jesus, ta imot min ånd!

⁵⁹And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

⁶⁰Og han falt på kne og ropte med høi røst: Herre, tilregn dem ikke denne synd! Og som han hadde sagt dette, sov han inn.

⁶⁰And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.
