¹I Judas konge Jojakims tredje regjeringsår drog Nebukadnesar, kongen i Babel, til Jerusalem og kringsatte det.

¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

²Og Herren gav Judas konge Jojakim i hans hånd, og likeledes en del av karene i Guds hus, og han førte dem til Sinears land, til sin guds hus - han lot karene sette inn i sin guds skattkammer.

²And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, and a part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar, to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.

³Og kongen sa til Aspenas, sin øverste hoffmann, at han skulde ta med sig nogen av Israels barn, både av kongeætten og av de fornemste,

³And the king spoke unto Ashpenaz the chief of his eunuchs, that he should bring of the children of Israel, both of the royal seed and of the nobles,

⁴unge gutter som var uten lyte og fagre å se til, og med evne til å tilegne sig all slags visdom og vinne kunnskap og bli kyndige i videnskap, og som var dyktige til å tjene i kongens palass, og at de skulde oplæres i kaldeernes skrift og tungemål.

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, and of goodly countenance, and skilful in all wisdom, and acquainted with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

⁵Og kongen fastsatte hvad de hver dag skulde ha av kongens kostelige mat og av den vin han drakk, og bød at de skulde opdras i tre år, og når disse år var omme, skulde de bli kongens tjenere.

⁵And the king appointed unto them a daily provision of the king's delicate food, and of the wine that he drank, to nourish them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

⁶Blandt dem var av Judas barn Daniel, Hananja, Misael og Asarja.

⁶Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁷Og den øverste hoffmann gav dem nye navn: Daniel kalte han Beltsasar og Hananja Sadrak og Misael Mesak og Asarja Abed-Nego.

⁷And the prince of the eunuchs gave them names: to Daniel he gave [the name] Belteshazzar, and to Hananiah, Shadrach, and to Mishael, Meshach, and to Azariah, Abed-nego.

⁸Men Daniel satte sig fore at han ikke vilde gjøre sig uren med kongens kostelige mat og med den vin han drakk, og han bad den øverste hoffmann om at han måtte være fri for således å gjøre sig uren.

⁸And Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not pollute himself with the king's delicate food, nor with the wine which he drank; and he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not have to pollute himself.

⁹Og Gud lot Daniel finne velvilje og barmhjertighet hos den øverste hoffmann.

⁹And God granted Daniel favour and mercy before the prince of the eunuchs.

¹⁰Og den øverste hoffmann sa til Daniel: Jeg er redd for at min herre kongen, som har fastsatt hvad I skal ete og drikke, vil synes at eders ansikter ser dårligere ut enn de gutters som er på eders alder, og at I således skal føre skyld over mitt hode hos kongen.

¹⁰And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king who hath appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces worse liking than the youths who are of your age? and ye would endanger my head with the king.

¹¹Da sa Daniel til kjellermesteren, som den øverste hoffmann hadde satt over Daniel, Hananja, Misael og Asarja:

¹¹And Daniel said to the steward, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

¹²Kjære, prøv det med dine tjenere i ti dager og la dem gi oss grønnsaker å ete og vann å drikke,

¹²Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink;

¹³så kan du siden ta vårt utseende i øiesyn, og likeså de gutters utseende som eter kongens kostelige mat, og gjør så med dine tjenere efter det du da ser!

¹³then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king's delicate food: and as thou shalt see, deal with thy servants.

¹⁴Og han gjorde som de ønsket, og prøvde det med dem i ti dager.

¹⁴And he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁵Og da de ti dager var omme, viste det sig at de var fagrere å se til og i bedre hold enn alle de gutter som hadde ett av kongens kostelige mat.

¹⁵And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and were fatter in flesh than all the youths that ate of the king's delicate food.

¹⁶Da lot kjellermesteren deres kostelige mat bære bort, og likeså den vin de skulde drikke, og gav dem grønnsaker.

¹⁶So the steward took away their delicate food, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

¹⁷Og Gud gav disse fire gutter kunnskap og forstand på all slags skrift og visdom, og Daniel skjønte sig på alle slags syner og drømmer.

¹⁷As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁸Da den tid kongen hadde fastsatt, var til ende, og de skulde fremstilles for ham, førte den øverste hoffmann dem inn for Nebukadnesar.

¹⁸And at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁹Og kongen talte med dem, og det fantes ikke blandt alle de unge gutter nogen som kunde måle sig med Daniel, Hananja, Misael og Asarja; så blev de da kongens tjenere.

¹⁹And the king spoke with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: and they stood before the king.

²⁰Og i enhver sak som krevde visdom og forstand, og som kongen spurte dem om, fant han at de ti ganger overgikk alle de tegnsutleggere og åndemanere som fantes i hele hans rike.

²⁰And in all matters of judicious wisdom, as to which the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the scribes [and] magicians that were in all his realm.

²¹Og Daniel blev der like til kong Kyros' første år.

²¹And Daniel continued unto the first year of king Cyrus.
