¹Ve dem som gir urettferdige lover og utsteder fordervelige skrivelser

¹Woe unto them that decree iniquitous decrees, and to the writers that prescribe oppression,

²for å trenge småfolk bort fra domstolen og for å frarane de fattige i mitt folk deres rett, for å gjøre enker til sitt bytte og for å plyndre de farløse.

²to turn away the poor from judgment, and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people; that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

³Men hvad vil I gjøre på hjemsøkelsens dag, når ødeleggelsen kommer fra det fjerne? Til hvem vil I fly for å få hjelp, og hvor vil I gjøre av eders skatter?

³And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the sudden destruction [which] shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory?

⁴Den som ikke synker i kne blandt fangene, skal falle blandt de drepte. Men med alt dette vender hans vrede ikke tilbake, og ennu er hans hånd rakt ut.

⁴They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

⁵Ve Assur, min vredes ris! Min harme er staven i hans hånd.

⁵Ah! the Assyrian! the rod of mine anger! and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

⁶Mot et gudløst folk sender jeg ham, mot et folk jeg er vred på, byder jeg ham fare for å røve og plyndre og trå det ned som skarn på gatene.

⁶I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge; to take the spoil, and to seize the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷Men så mener ikke han, og i sitt hjerte tenker han ikke så; men til å ødelegge står hans hu og til å utrydde folk i mengde.

⁷But he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; for it is in his heart to extirpate and cut off nations not a few.

⁸For han sier: Er ikke mine høvdinger konger alle sammen?

⁸For he saith, Are not my princes all kings?

⁹Er det ikke gått Kalno som Karkemis? Er det ikke gått Hamat som Arpad? Er det ikke gått Samaria som Damaskus?

⁹Is not Calno as Karkemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰Likesom min hånd har nådd de andre guders riker, enda deres utskårne billeder overgikk Jerusalems og Samarias,

¹⁰As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, -- and their graven images exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

¹¹skulde jeg da ikke kunne gjøre det samme med Jerusalem og dets gudebilleder som jeg har gjort med Samaria og dets guder?

¹¹-- shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her images?

¹²Men når Herren har fullført hele sin gjerning på Sions berg og i Jerusalem, da vil jeg hjemsøke Assurs konge for frukten av hans hjertes overmot og hans stolte øines tross.

¹²And it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and upon Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stoutness of heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

¹³For han sier: Ved min hånds kraft har jeg gjort det og ved min visdom, for jeg er forstandig; jeg flyttet folkeslags landemerker, og deres skatter har jeg plyndret, og i mitt velde støtte jeg ned dem som satt i høisetet,

¹³For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done [it], and by my wisdom, for I am intelligent; and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and, like a valiant man, I have brought down them that sit [on thrones];

¹⁴og min hånd grep efter folkenes gods som efter et fuglerede, og som en sanker forlatte egg, har jeg sanket alle land på jorden, og det var ingen som rørte en vinge eller åpnet sitt nebb og pep.

¹⁴and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples, and as one gathereth forsaken eggs, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹⁵Roser vel øksen sig mot den som hugger med den, eller gjør sagen sig stor mot den som drar den? Rett som om staven svinget den som løfter den, som om kjeppen løftet den som ikke er av tre*! / {* mannen som har den i hånden.}

¹⁵-- Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up [him who is] not wood!

¹⁶Derfor skal Herren, Israels Gud, hærskarenes Gud, sende tærende sott blandt hans kraftfulle menn, og under hans herlighet skal det brenne en brand som luende ild.

¹⁶Therefore shall the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness, and under his glory he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire:

¹⁷Israels lys skal bli til en ild, og dets Hellige til en lue, og den skal brenne og fortære hans torn og tistel, alt på en dag.

¹⁷and the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briars in one day,

¹⁸Og han skal gjøre ende på hans skogs og hans fruktbare marks herlighet, både rubb og stubb, og det skal gå som når en syk visner bort.

¹⁸and it shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a sick man fainteth.

¹⁹De trær som blir levnet av hans skog, skal lett kunne telles; et barn kan skrive dem op.

¹⁹And the remainder of the trees of his forest shall be few: yea, a child might write them.

²⁰På den tid skal levningen av Israel og de undkomne av Jakobs hus ikke mere bli ved å stole på ham som slo det*, men de skal trofast stole på Herren, Israels Hellige. / {* Assur; 2KG 16, 7.}

²⁰And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the remnant of Israel and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob shall no more again rely upon him that smote them; but they shall rely upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹En levning skal omvende sig, levningen av Jakob, til Gud den veldige.

²¹The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty ùGod.

²²For om ditt folk, Israel, er som havets sand, skal bare en levning av det omvende sig; tilintetgjørelse er fast besluttet, en flom av rettferdighet*. / {* Guds straffende rettferdighet.}

²²For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant of them shall return: the consumption determined shall overflow in righteousness.

²³For tilintetgjørelse og fast besluttet dom fullbyrder Herren, Israels Gud, hærskarenes Gud, over all jorden.

²³For a consumption, and [one] determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, accomplish in the midst of all the land.

²⁴Derfor sier Herren, Israels Gud, hærskarenes Gud, så: Frykt ikke, du mitt folk som bor i Sion, for Assur, når han slår dig med kjeppen og løfter sin stav over dig, således som de gjorde i Egypten!

²⁴Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt:

²⁵For bare en liten stund til, så er min harme til ende, og min vrede vender sig til deres* ødeleggelse. / {* assyrernes.}

²⁵for yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction.

²⁶Og Herren, hærskarenes Gud, skal svinge en svepe over ham, som da han slo Midian ved Orebs klippe, og hans stav skal være rakt ut over havet, og han skal løfte den på samme vis som i Egypten.

²⁶And Jehovah of hosts will stir up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod [shall be] upon the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

²⁷På den tid skal hans byrde bli tatt bort fra din skulder, og hans åk fra din hals, og åket skal sprenges av dens fedme*. / {* den velmakt hvormed Herren velsigner Israel.}

²⁷And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. ...

²⁸Han kommer over Ajat, drar frem gjennem Migron; i Mikmas lar han sitt tren bli igjen.

²⁸He is come to Aiath, he hath passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage.

²⁹De drar gjennem skaret. I Geba [sier de] vil vi bli natten over. Rama bever, Sauls Gibea flyr.

²⁹They are gone through the pass; they make their lodging at Geba: Ramah trembleth, Gibeah of Saul is fled.

³⁰Skrik høit, du Gallims datter! Gi akt, Laisa! Arme Anatot!

³⁰Lift up thy voice, daughter of Gallim! Hearken, O Laish! -- Poor Anathoth!

³¹Madmena flyr; Gebims innbyggere flytter sitt gods i hast.

³¹Madmenah is fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim take to flight.

³²Allerede samme dag står han i Nob; da svinger han sin hånd mot Sions datters berg, mot Jerusalem-haugen.

³²Still a day of halting at Nob; he shaketh his hand [against] the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. ...

³³Se, Herren, Israels Gud, hærskarenes Gud, hugger av de løvrike grener med forferdelig kraft, og de ranke, kneisende trær hugges ned, og de høie blir lave,

³³Behold the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, shall lop the boughs with violence; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be brought low;

³⁴og den tette skog hugges ned med øksen, og Libanon faller for den Veldige*. / {* d.e. Herren.}

³⁴and he shall make clearings in the thickets of the forest with iron; and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
