¹Dette er det ord som kom til Jeremias fra Herren da kong Sedekias sendte Pashur, Malkias sønn, og presten Sefanja, Ma'asejas sønn, til ham og lot si:

¹The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

²Spør Herren for oss! For Babels konge Nebukadnesar strider mot oss. Kanskje Herren vil gjøre med oss efter alle sine undergjerninger, så han drar bort fra oss.

²Inquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that Jehovah will deal with us according to all his marvellous works, that he may go up from us.

³Da sa Jeremias til dem: Så skal I si til Sedekias:

³And Jeremiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah:

⁴Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vender om de krigsvåben som er i eders hånd, og som I strider med utenfor muren mot Babels konge og mot kaldeerne, som har kringsatt eder, og jeg vil samle dem midt i denne by.

⁴Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you, outside the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.

⁵Og jeg vil selv stride mot eder med utrakt hånd og med sterk arm og med vrede og harme og stor fortørnelse.

⁵And I myself will fight against you with a stretched-out hand, and with a strong arm, and in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.

⁶Og jeg vil slå denne bys innbyggere, både mennesker og dyr; i en stor pest skal de dø.

⁶And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.

⁷Og derefter, sier Herren, vil jeg gi Sedekias, Judas konge, og hans tjenere og folket, de som i denne by er blitt igjen efter pesten, sverdet og hungersnøden, i Babels konge Nebukadnesars hånd og i deres fienders hånd og i deres hånd som står dem efter livet; og han skal slå dem med sverdets egg, han skal ikke spare dem og ikke skåne og ikke forbarme sig.

⁷And afterwards, saith Jehovah, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life, and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword: he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

⁸Og til dette folk skal du si: Så sier Herren: Se, jeg legger frem for eder livets vei og dødens vei:

⁸And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

⁹Den som blir i denne by, skal dø ved sverd og ved hunger og ved pest; men den som drar ut og går over til kaldeerne, som har kringsatt eder, skal bli i live, og han skal få sitt liv til krigsbytte.

⁹He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth out, and deserteth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

¹⁰For jeg har vendt mitt åsyn imot denne by til det onde og ikke til det gode, sier Herren; i Babels konges hånd skal den bli gitt, og han skal brenne den op med ild.

¹⁰For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith Jehovah: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

¹¹Og til Judas konges hus skal du si: Hør Herrens ord, du Davids hus!

¹¹And touching the house of the king of Judah, hear ye the word of Jehovah.

¹²Så sier Herren: Hold rett hver morgen, og fri den som er plyndret, ut av undertrykkerens hånd, forat ikke min harme skal fare ut som ild og brenne uten at nogen slukker, for eders onde gjerningers skyld!

¹²House of David, thus saith Jehovah: Judge with justice in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go forth like fire and burn, and there be none to quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

¹³Se, jeg kommer over dig, du som bor i dalen, på berget på sletten*, sier Herren - I som sier: Hvem kan komme ned og overfalle oss, og hvem kan komme inn i våre boliger? / {* d.e. Sion; JER 17, 3.}

¹³Behold, I am against thee, inhabitress of the valley, the rock of the plain, saith Jehovah; ye that say, Who shall come down against us, or who shall enter into our dwellings?

¹⁴Jeg vil hjemsøke eder efter frukten av eders gjerninger, sier Herren, og jeg vil tende ild på dets skog*, og den skal fortære alt rundt omkring det. / {* d.e. husene i Jerusalem.}

¹⁴And I will visit you according to the fruit of your doings, saith Jehovah; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.
