¹Rehabeam drog til Sikem; for hele Israel var kommet til Sikem for å gjøre ham til konge.

¹Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

²Da Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, hørte det - han var da i Egypten; han var flyktet dit for kong Salomo - da vendte han tilbake fra Egypten.

²It happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

³Og de sendte bud efter ham; så kom Jeroboam og hele Israel og talte til Rehabeam og sa:

³They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

⁴Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt; men lett nu du den hårde tjeneste og det tunge åk som din far la på oss! Så vil vi tjene dig.

⁴“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”

⁵Han svarte dem: Gå bort og vent i tre dager og kom så hit til mig igjen! Så gikk folket bort.

⁵He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” The people departed.

⁶Og kong Rehabeam rådførte sig med de gamle, som hadde gjort tjeneste hos hans far Salomo, mens han ennu levde, og han sa: Hvad råder I mig til å svare dette folk?

⁶King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?”

⁷De svarte ham: Hvis du vil vise dig vennlig mot dette folk og er nådig mot dem og gir dem gode ord, så vil de være dine tjenere for alle tider.

⁷They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

⁸Men han aktet ikke på det råd som de gamle hadde gitt ham, men rådførte sig med de unge, som var vokset op sammen med ham, og som nu var i hans tjeneste.

⁸But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

⁹Han spurte dem: Hvad råder I til at vi skal svare dette folk som har sagt til mig: Lett det åk din far la på oss?

⁹He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?’”

¹⁰Og de unge, som var vokset op sammen med ham, svarte ham: Så skal du si til dette folk som sa til dig: Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt, men gjør du det lettere for oss - så skal du tale til dem: Min lillefinger er tykkere enn min fars lender;

¹⁰The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.

¹¹har nu min far lagt et tungt åk på eder, så vil jeg gjøre eders åk ennu tyngre; har min far tuktet eder med sveper, så vil jeg tukte eder med skorpioner.

¹¹Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”

¹²Så kom Jeroboam og alt folket til Rehabeam den tredje dag, således som kongen hadde sagt: Kom til mig igjen om tre dager!

¹²So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”

¹³Da gav kongen dem et hårdt svar; kong Rehabearn aktet ikke på de gamles råd,

¹³The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

¹⁴men svarte dem som de unge hadde rådet til: Har min far gjort eders åk tungt, så vil jeg gjøre det ennu tyngre; har min far tuktet eder med sveper, så vil jeg tukte eder med skorpioner.

¹⁴and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”

¹⁵Kongen hørte ikke på folket; for Gud styrte det så forat Herrens ord skulde bli opfylt, det som han hadde talt til Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, ved Akia fra Silo.

¹⁵So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹⁶Da nu hele Israel så at kongen ikke hørte på dem, svarte folket kongen og sa: Hvad del har vi i David? Vi har ingen lodd i Isais sønn. Til dine telt, Israel, hver og en! Se nu selv til ditt hus, David! Så drog hele Israel hjem igjen.

¹⁶When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.

¹⁷Bare over de Israels barn som bodde i Judas byer, blev Rehabeam konge.

¹⁷But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

¹⁸Da sendte kong Rehabeam Hadoram avsted, han som hadde opsyn med pliktarbeidet, men Israels barn stenet ham, så han døde, og kong Rehabeam selv måtte i all hast springe op i sin vogn og flyktet til Jerusalem.

¹⁸Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

¹⁹Således falt Israel fra Davids hus, og så har det vært til denne dag.

¹⁹So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
