¹Og Herren svarte Job ut av et stormvær og sa:

¹Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,

²Hvem er han som formørker mitt råd med ord uten forstand?

²“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

³Nuvel, omgjord dine lender som en mann! Så vil jeg spørre dig, og du skal lære mig.

³Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!

⁴Hvor var du da jeg grunnfestet jorden? Si frem hvis du vet det!

⁴“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.

⁵Hvem fastsatte vel dens mål? Vet du det? Eller hvem spente målesnor ut over den?

⁵Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?

⁶Hvor blev dens støtter rammet ned, eller hvem la dens hjørnesten,

⁶Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

⁷mens alle morgenstjerner jublet, og alle Guds sønner ropte av fryd?

⁷when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

⁸Og hvem lukket for havet med dører, da det brøt frem og gikk ut av mors liv,

⁸“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth from the womb,

⁹da jeg gjorde skyer til dets klædebon og skodde til dets svøp

⁹when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,

¹⁰og merket av en grense for det og satte bom og dører

¹⁰marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,

¹¹og sa: Hit skal du komme og ikke lenger, her skal dine stolte bølger legge sig?

¹¹and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’

¹²Har du i dine dager befalt morgenen å bryte frem, har du vist morgenrøden dens sted,

¹²“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place;

¹³forat den skulde gripe fatt i jordens ender, og de ugudelige rystes bort fra den?

¹³that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?

¹⁴Jorden tar da form likesom ler under seglet, og tingene treder frem som et klædebon,

¹⁴It is changed as clay under the seal, and stands forth as a garment.

¹⁵og de ugudelige unddras sitt lys*, og den løftede arm knuses. / {* d.e. mørket; JBS 24, 17.}

¹⁵From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.

¹⁶Er du kommet til havets kilder, og har du vandret på dypets bunn?

¹⁶“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

¹⁷Har dødens porter vist sig for dig, og har du sett dødsskyggens porter?

¹⁷Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¹⁸Har du sett ut over jordens vidder? Si frem dersom du kjenner alt dette!

¹⁸Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all.

¹⁹Hvor er veien dit hvor lyset bor? Og mørket - hvor er dets sted,

¹⁹“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,

²⁰så du kunde hente det frem til dets område, så du kjente stiene til dets hus?

²⁰that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?

²¹Du vet det vel; dengang blev du jo født, og dine dagers tall er stort.

²¹Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!

²²Er du kommet til forrådskammerne for sneen, og har du sett forrådshusene for haglet,

²²Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail,

²³som jeg har opspart til trengselens tid, til kampens og krigens dag?

²³which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

²⁴Hvad vei følger lyset når det deler sig, og østenvinden når den spreder sig over jorden?

²⁴By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?

²⁵Hvem har åpnet renner for regnskyllet og vei for lynstrålen

²⁵Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm;

²⁶for å la det regne over et øde land, over en ørken hvor intet menneske bor,

²⁶To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;

²⁷for å mette ørk og øde og få gressbunnen til å gro?

²⁷to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

²⁸Har regnet nogen far? Eller hvem har avlet duggens dråper?

²⁸Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?

²⁹Av hvis liv er vel isen gått frem, og himmelens rim - hvem fødte det?

²⁹Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it?

³⁰Vannet blir hårdt som sten, og havets overflate stivner.

³⁰The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.

³¹Kan du knytte Syvstjernens bånd, eller kan du løse Orions lenker?

³¹“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?

³²Kan du føre Dyrekretsens stjernebilleder frem i rette tid, og Bjørnen med dens unger* - kan du styre deres gang? / {* JBS 9, 9.}

³²Can you lead forth the constellations in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?

³³Kjenner du himmelens lover? Fastsetter du dens herredømme over jorden?

³³Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?

³⁴Kan din røst nå op til skyen, så en flom av vann dekker dig?

³⁴“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you?

³⁵Kan du sende ut lynene, så de farer avsted, så de sier til dig: Se, her er vi?

³⁵Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are?’

³⁶Hvem har lagt visdom i de mørke skyer, eller hvem har lagt forstand i luftsynet?

³⁶Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?

³⁷Hvem teller skyene med visdom, og himmelens vannsekker - hvem heller vannet ut av dem,

³⁷Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky,

³⁸når støvet flyter sammen til en fast masse, og jordklumpene henger fast ved hverandre?

³⁸when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?

³⁹“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

⁴⁰when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?

⁴¹Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
