¹Hvad skal vi da si at vår far Abraham har opnådd efter kjødet?

¹What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

²For blev Abraham rettferdiggjort av gjerninger, da har han noget å rose sig av. Men det har han ikke for Gud;

²For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

³for hvad sier Skriften? Abraham trodde Gud, og det blev regnet ham til rettferdighet;

³For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

⁴men den som har gjerninger, ham tilregnes lønnen ikke av nåde, men som skyldighet;

⁴Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

⁵den derimot som ikke har gjerninger, men tror på ham som rettferdiggjør den ugudelige, ham regnes hans tro til rettferdighet.

⁵But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

⁶Således priser også David det menneske salig som Gud tilregner rettferdighet uten gjerninger:

⁶Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,

⁷Salige er de hvis overtredelser er forlatt, og hvis synder er skjult,

⁷“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

⁸salig er den mann som Herren ikke tilregner synd.

⁸Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.” Psalm 32:1-2

⁹Gjelder nu denne saligprisning de omskårne, eller også de uomskårne? Vi sier jo at troen blev regnet Abraham til rettferdighet;

⁹Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

¹⁰hvorledes blev den da tilregnet ham? da han var omskåret, eller da han hadde forhud? Ikke da han var omskåret, men da han hadde forhud,

¹⁰How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

¹¹og han fikk omskjærelsens tegn som et segl på rettferdigheten ved den tro som han hadde da han var uomskåret, forat han skulde være far til alle de uomskårne som tror, så rettferdigheten kunde tilregnes også dem,

¹¹He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

¹²og far til de omskårne som ikke bare har omskjærelsen, men også vandrer i fotsporene av den tro som vår far Abraham hadde da han var uomskåret.

¹²He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

¹³For ikke ved loven fikk Abraham eller hans ætt det løfte at han skulde være arving til verden, men ved troens rettferdighet.

¹³For the promise to Abraham and to his seed that he should be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

¹⁴For dersom de som holder sig til loven, er arvinger, da er troen blitt unyttig, og løftet blitt til intet;

¹⁴For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.

¹⁵for loven virker vrede; men hvor det ikke er nogen lov, er det heller ingen overtredelse.

¹⁵For the law works wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.

¹⁶Derfor fikk han løftet ved troen, forat det kunde være som en nåde, så løftet kunde stå fast for hele ætten, ikke bare for den som har loven, men også for den som har Abrahams tro, han som er far til oss alle

¹⁶For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

¹⁷- som skrevet er: Til mange folks far har jeg satt dig - for Guds åsyn, hvem han trodde, han som gjør de døde levende og nevner det som ikke er til, som om det var til.

¹⁷As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” Genesis 17:5 This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

¹⁸Mot håp trodde han med håp, forat han skulde bli mange folks far efter det som sagt var: Så skal din ætt bli;

¹⁸Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your seed be.” Genesis 15:5

¹⁹og uten å bli svak i troen så han på sitt eget legeme, som var utlevd, han var næsten hundre år gammel, og på Saras utdødde morsliv;

¹⁹Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

²⁰på Guds løfte tvilte han ikke i vantro, men blev sterk i sin tro, idet han gav Gud æren

²⁰Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,

²¹og var fullt viss på at det han hadde lovt, det var han også mektig til å gjøre.

²¹and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.

²²Derfor blev det også regnet ham til rettferdighet.

²²Therefore it also was “reckoned to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

²³Men ikke bare for hans skyld er det skrevet at det blev tilregnet ham,

²³Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,

²⁴men også for vår skyld, som det vil bli tilregnet, vi som tror på ham som opvakte Jesus, vår Herre, fra de døde,

²⁴but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,

²⁵han som blev gitt for våre overtredelser og opreist til vår rettferdiggjørelse.

²⁵who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
