¹ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਆਖੀਏ ਜੋ ਸਾਡੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ?

¹What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

²ਉਸਨੇ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ? ਜੇਕਰ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਕਾਰਣ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਸ਼ੇਖੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਸ਼ੇਖੀ ਨਾ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਿਆ।

²For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

³ਪੋਥੀ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ: “ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।”

³For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

⁴ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਤਨਖਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਹਫ਼ੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਮਜਦੂਰੀ ਕਮਾਈ, ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

⁴Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

⁵ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਸਗੋਂ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ,ਦੋ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫ਼ਿਰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

⁵But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

⁶ਦਾਊਦ ਵੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਉਸਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਿਣਿਆ ਬਿਨਾ ਧਰਮੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

⁶Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,

⁷“ਧੰਨ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ ਮੁਆਫ਼ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਗਏ ਹਨ।

⁷“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

⁸ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਣੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

⁸Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.” Psalm 32:1-2

⁹ਕੀ ਇਹ ਖੁਸ਼ ਨਸੀਬੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸੁੰਨਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਹੈ? ਜਾਂ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ? ਅਸੀਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਸਥਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਬੂਲੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਆਸਥਾ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ।

⁹Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

¹⁰ਪਰ ਇਹ ਕਦ ਵਾਪਰਿਆ? ਕੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਬੂਲਿਆ ਜਾਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ? ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ।

¹⁰How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

¹¹ਉਸਨੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਕਰਾਈ ਕਿ ਪਰੇਮਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਸਦੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਇੱਕ ਸਬੂਤ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਧਰਮੀ ਸੀ। ਤਾਂ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ, ਪਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

¹¹He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

¹²ਅਤੇ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਡ਼ੇ ਸੁੰਨਤੀਏ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਥਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਗੋਂ ਇਹ ਉਹੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਹਡ਼ੀ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸੀ।

¹²He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

¹³ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਉਲਾਦ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਵਚਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਣਗੇ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵਚਨ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਰਣ ਕਰਨ ਕਾਰਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ, ਸਗੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਹ ਵਚਨ ਸਦਾਚਾਰੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਜਿਹਡ਼ੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ।

¹³For the promise to Abraham and to his seed that he should be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

¹⁴ਜੇਕਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਵਸਤਾਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਚਨ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਵਚਨ ਹੀ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹੈ।

¹⁴For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.

¹⁵ਕਿਉਂ? ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਹੀ ਲਿਆ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਥੇ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਅਵਗਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ?

¹⁵For the law works wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.

¹⁶ਇਸ ਕਾਰਣ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਵਚਨ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਹ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਵਚਨ ਇੱਕ ਮੁਫ਼ਤੀ ਦਾਤ ਹੋਵੇ। ਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਵਚਨ ਮੁਫ਼ਤੀ ਦਾਤ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਵਚਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਵਚਨ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਹੇਠ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਗੋਂ ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ।

¹⁶For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

¹⁷ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਪੋਥੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ: “ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।” ਇਹ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਹਡ਼ਾ ਮੁਰਦਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਹੋਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਹੋਣੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

¹⁷As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” Genesis 17:5 This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

¹⁸ਕੋਈ ਉਮੀਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਔਲਾਦ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। ਪਰ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਨੇ ਉਮੀਦ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਲਾਦਾਂ ਹੋਣਗੀਆਂ।”

¹⁸Who in hope believed against hope, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your seed be.” Genesis 15:5

¹⁹ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਸੀ। ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਸੌ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦਾ। ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਔਲਾਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਸੰਭਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਸਾਰਾਹ ਵੀ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣ ਤੋਂ ਅਸਮਰਥ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਾ ਹੋਈ।

¹⁹Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

²⁰ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਵਚਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਬੇਪਰਤੀਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੰਕਾ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਸਗੋਂ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕੀਤੀ।

²⁰Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,

²¹ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਉਸਨੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਡ਼ਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਚਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਵਚਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਯੋਗ ਸੀ।

²¹and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.

²²ਇਸ ਲਈ, “ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ।” ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ “ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲ ਕੀਤਾ” ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਅਬਰਾਹਾਮ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਸਗੋਂ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ।

²²Therefore it also was “reckoned to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6

²³ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਨਿਹਚਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

²³Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,

²⁴ਅਸੀਂ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਯਿਸੂ ਸਾਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਉਭਾਰਿਆ।

²⁴but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,

²⁵ਯਿਸੂ ਸਾਡੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਖਾਤਰ ਮਾਰਨ ਲਈ ਸੌਂਪਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਜੀਵਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

²⁵who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
