¹ نبوکدنصر در سال دوم سلطنت خود، خوابی دید که او را بسیار نگران و آشفته کرد، به طوری که دیگر نمی‌توانست بخوابد.

¹And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.

² پس فرستاد تا پیشگویان و جادوگران و فالگیران و حکیمان را بیاورند که خواب او را برایش تعبیر نمایند. وقتی آنها آمدند و در حضور پادشاه ایستادند،

²And the king commanded to call the scribes, and the magicians, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to shew the king his dreams; and they came and stood before the king.

³ پادشاه به آنها گفت: «خوابی دیده‌ام که مرا بسیار نگران و آشفته کرده است. حالا می‌خواهم تعبیر این خواب را بدانم.»

³And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.

⁴ حکما به زبان آرامی ‌در جواب پادشاه گفتند: «پادشاه تا به ابد زنده بماند. خواب را برای بندگان خود بگویید تا آن را تعبیر کنیم.»

⁴And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, O king, live for ever! tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.

⁵ پادشاه در جواب حکما گفت: «فرمان من اینست: اگر خواب مرا نگویید و آن را تعبیر نکنید، شما را تکه‌تکه کرده و خانه‌های شما را ویران خواهم کرد.

⁵The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The command is gone forth from me: If ye do not make known unto me the dream, and its interpretation, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

⁶ امّا اگر هم خواب و هم تعبیرش را بگویید، در عوض جایزه و پاداش بزرگی به شما خواهم داد. و شما را محترم خواهم شمرد. حالا بگویید که خواب چه بوده و تعبیرش چیست!»

⁶But if ye shew the dream and its interpretation, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour; therefore shew me the dream and its interpretation.

⁷ حکما دوباره به پادشاه گفتند: «پادشاها! اگر شما فقط خواب را به ما بگویید، ما آن را برای شما تعبیر خواهیم کرد.»

⁷They answered the second time and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.

⁸ پادشاه گفت: «معلوم است که دنبال فرصت می‌گردید. زیرا می‌دانید که فرمانی که صادر کرده‌ام قطعی است و

⁸The king answered and said, I know of a certainty that ye would gain time, because ye see the word is gone forth from me;

⁹ این را بدانید که اگر خواب را نگویید، معلوم می‌شود که شما سخنان دروغ و باطل سرهم می‌کنید و می‌گویید. پس اول خواب مرا بگویید، آنگاه مطمئن می‌شوم که می‌توانید تعبیر آن را هم بگویید.»

⁹but if ye do not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me its interpretation.

¹⁰ حکما به پادشاه گفتند: «پادشاها، در روی زمین هیچ‌کس نیست که بتواند فرمان شما را انجام دهد و هیچ پادشاه یا حاکمی هم نیست که چنین چیزی از پیشگویان یا جادوگران و یا حکیمان بپرسد.

¹⁰The Chaldeans answered before the king and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter; therefore there is no king, however great and powerful, that hath asked such a thing of any scribe, or magician, or Chaldean.

¹¹ چیزی را که پادشاه خواسته‌اند، به قدری دشوار است که هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند آن را انجام دهد، مگر خدایانی که بر روی زمین زندگی نمی‌کنند.»

¹¹For the thing that the king demandeth is extraordinary, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

¹² پادشاه از این سخنان بسیار عصبانی و خشمگین شد و فرمان داد تا تمام دانشمندان بابل را هلاک کنند.

¹²For this cause the king was irritated and very wroth, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

¹³ بنابراین فرمان قتل همهٔ آنها و همچنین دانیال و دوستانش صادر شد.

¹³And the decree went forth that the wise men were to be slain; and they sought Daniel and his companions to slay them.

¹⁴ دانیال با اریوک، رئیس جلاّدان پادشاه که مأمور بود دانشمندان را به قتل برساند به طور محرمانه گفت‌وگو کرد

¹⁴Then Daniel answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the chief of the king's bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:

¹⁵ و از وی پرسید: «چرا پادشاه چنین فرمان سختی را صادر کرده است؟» اریوک ماجرا را برای دانیال تعریف کرد.

¹⁵he answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so rigorous from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ دانیال فوراً به نزد پادشاه رفت و از او مهلت خواست تا تعبیر خواب را بگوید.

¹⁶And Daniel went in, and requested of the king that he would give him time, that he might shew the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ سپس به خانه رفت و برای دوستانش، حنانیا، میشائیل و عزریا تعریف کرد که چه اتّفاقی افتاده است

¹⁷Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions;

¹⁸ و از آنها خواست نزد خدای آسمان دعا کنند که او رحمت فرماید و این راز را برای آنها آشکار سازد تا با دانشمندان بابلی کشته نشوند.

¹⁸that they would desire mercies of the God of the heavens concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ همان شب در رؤیا، راز خواب بر دانیال آشکار شد و دانیال خدای آسمان را ستایش کرد و گفت:

¹⁹Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of the heavens.

²⁰ قدرت و حکمت از خداست. نام او تا به ابد متبارک باد.

²⁰Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; For wisdom and might are his.

²¹ او زمانها و فصلها را تغییر می‌دهد. پادشاهان را منصوب و معزول می‌کند. او حکمت را به حکیمان و دانش را به دانشمندان عطا می‌فرماید.

²¹And it is he that changeth times and seasons; He deposeth kings, and setteth up kings; He giveth wisdom to the wise, And knowledge to them that know understanding.

²² رازهای عمیق و پوشیده را آشکار می‌سازد. آنچه را در تاریکی است می‌داند. و گرداگردش را نور فراگرفته است.

²²It is he that revealeth the deep and secret things; He knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ ای خدای نیاکان من، تو را شکر و سپاس می‌گویم، زیرا به من قدرت و حکمت عطا کردی. دعای مرا مستجاب فرمودی، و آنچه را که باید به پادشاه بگویم، به ما نشان دادی.

²³I thank thee, and I praise thee, O God of my fathers, Who hast given me wisdom and might, And hast made known unto me already what we desired of thee; For thou hast made known unto us the king's matter.

²⁴ دانیال نزد اریوک که از طرف پادشاه مأمور به هلاکت رساندن دانشمندان بود رفت و به او گفت: «آنها را نکش. مرا به نزد پادشاه ببر تا تعبیر خواب او را بگویم.»

²⁴Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said thus unto him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.

²⁵ اریوک فوراً دانیال را به حضور نبوکدنصر پادشاه برد و گفت: «ای پادشاه، یکی از تبعیدیان یهودی را پیدا کرده‌ام که می‌تواند تعبیر خواب شما را بیان کند.»

²⁵Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him: I have found a man of the sons of the captivity of Judah that will make known unto the king the interpretation.

²⁶ پادشاه به دانیال که به بلطشصر معروف بود گفت: «آیا می‌توانی به من بگویی چه خوابی دیده‌ام و تعبیر آن چیست؟»

²⁶The king answered and said unto Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream that I have seen, and its interpretation?

²⁷ دانیال جواب داد «هیچ‌یک از دانشمندان و جادوگران و فالگیران و ستاره‌شناسان نمی‌توانند آنچه را پادشاه می‌خواهد بگویند.

²⁷Daniel answered in the presence of the king and said, The secret that the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the magicians, the scribes, the astrologers, shew unto the king;

²⁸ امّا خدایی در آسمان است که رازها را آشکار می‌سازد و از آنچه در آینده اتّفاق خواهد افتاد، به پادشاه خبر داده است و من اکنون آن خواب را بیان می‌کنم.

²⁸but there is a God in the heavens, who revealeth secrets, and maketh known to king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be at the end of days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed are these:

²⁹ «ای پادشاه، هنگامی‌که در خواب بودی، دربارهٔ آینده خواب دیدی و خدا که آشکار کنندهٔ رازهای پنهان است، از آنچه در آینده اتّفاق خواهد افتاد به تو خبر داده است.

²⁹-- as for thee, O king, thy thoughts arose upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter; and he that revealeth secrets hath made known to thee what shall come to pass.

³⁰ امّا این راز که بر من آشکار شده به‌خاطر این نیست که دانشمندتر از دیگران هستم، بلکه به این جهت است که پادشاه تعبیر خواب خود را بداند و از معنای افکاری که به خاطرش رسیده است آگاه شود.

³⁰And as for me, this secret is revealed to me, not by [any] wisdom that I have more than any living, but to the intent that the interpretation should be made known to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

³¹ «ای پادشاه، تو در خواب مجسمهٔ بزرگی دیدی که بسیار درخشان و ترسناک بود.

³¹Thou, O king, sawest, and behold, a great image. This image was mighty and its brightness excellent; it stood before thee, and its appearance was terrible.

³² سر آن از طلای خالص ساخته شده بود و سینه و بازوهایش از نقره، شکم و کپلهایش از برنز،

³²This image's head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass,

³³ ساقهای او از آهن و پاهایش قسمتی از آهن و قسمتی از گل بود.

³³its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay.

³⁴ وقتی تو به آن نگاه می‌کردی، تخته سنگ بزرگی بدون اینکه کسی به آن دست بزند، پاهای آهنی و گِلی آن مجسمه را درهم شکست.

³⁴Thou sawest till a stone was cut out without hands; and it smote the image upon its feet of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.

³⁵ آنگاه آهن، گل، برنز، نقره و طلا همه با هم آنچنان ریز شدند که باد آنان را مانند گرد و غبار هنگام خرمن کوبی پراکنده نمود که دیگر اثری از آن بر جای نماند. امّا آن سنگ آن‌قدر بزرگ شد که به مانند کوه بزرگی گردید که سراسر روی زمین را پوشانید.

³⁵Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken in pieces together, and they became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them. And the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

³⁶ «این خواب پادشاه بود و حالا تعبیرش را هم برای تو خواهم گفت:

³⁶This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation of it before the king.

³⁷ ای پادشاه، تو شاه شاهان هستی. خدای آسمان به تو سلطنت و قدرت و قوّت و جلال بخشیده است.

³⁷Thou, O king, art a king of kings, unto whom the God of the heavens hath given the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the glory;

³⁸ خدا تو را بر همهٔ مردمان روی زمین و بر تمام حیوانات و پرندگان مسلّط گردانیده است. تو آن سر طلا هستی.

³⁸and wheresoever the children of men, the beasts of the field, and the fowl of the heavens dwell, he hath given them into thy hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all: thou art this head of gold.

³⁹ بعد از تو، سلطنت دیگری روی کار خواهد آمد که به بزرگی سلطنت تو نخواهد بود. پس از آن سومین سلطنت که مانند آن برنز است، روی کار خواهد آمد و بر تمام زمین حکمرانی خواهد کرد.

³⁹And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee; then another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

⁴⁰ پس از آن چهارمین سلطنت است که قدرتی مانند آهن دارد. همان‌طور ‌که آهن همه‌چیز را نرم و خرد می‌کند، آن هم همه‌چیز را نرم و خرد خواهد کرد.

⁴⁰And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth everything, and as iron that breaketh all these, so shall it break in pieces and bruise.

⁴¹ تو همچنین در خواب دیدی که پاها و انگشتان، قسمتی از گل و قسمتی از آهن بود. این نشانه آن است که آن امپراتوری تقسیم خواهد شد. همان طوری که آهن و گل با هم مخلوط شده بودند، آن امپراتور هم مقداری از قدرت آهن را خواهد داشت.

⁴¹And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potter's clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

⁴² امّا انگشتان که قسمتی از آهن و مقداری از گل ساخته شده بود، به این معنی است که بخشی از آن امپراتوری قوی و بخشی از آن ضعیف خواهد بود.

⁴²And [as] the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.

⁴³ تو مشاهده کردی که آهن و گل با هم مخلوط شده بودند. معنی آن این است که پادشاهان آن دوره کوشش خواهند کرد به وسیلهٔ ازدواج با اقوام دیگر، خویشاوند و متّحد شوند. ولی همان‌طور که گل و آهن نمی‌توانند با هم آمیخته شوند، آنها هم در هدف خود موفّق نخواهند شد.

⁴³And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay.

⁴⁴ در زمان آن پادشاهان، خدای آسمان سلطنتی برپا خواهد کرد که هیچ‌گاه از بین نخواهد رفت. آن سلطنت هرگز مغلوب هیچ ملّتی نخواهد شد، ولی تمام این امپراتوری‌ها را بکلّی از بین برده و خود تا به ابد باقی خواهد ماند.

⁴⁴And in the days of these kings shall the God of the heavens set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the sovereignty thereof shall not be left to another people: it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, but itself shall stand for ever.

⁴⁵ تو دیدی که یک تخته سنگ بدون اینکه کسی به آن دست بزند از کوه جدا شد و مجسمه‌ای را که از آهن، برنز، گل، نقره و طلا ساخته شده بود خرد کرد. ای پادشاه، خدای بزرگ از آنچه در آینده اتّفاق خواهد افتاد تو را آگاه ساخته است و من خواب و تعبیر آن را کاملاً برای تو شرح دادم.»

⁴⁵Forasmuch as thou sawest that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold, -- the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter. And the dream is certain, and the interpretation of it sure.

⁴⁶ آنگاه پادشاه در مقابل دانیال به خاک افتاد و او را سجده کرد و دستور داد تا برای دانیال قربانی کنند و بُخور بسوزانند.

⁴⁶Then king Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.

⁴⁷ سپس به دانیال گفت: «خدای تو از تمام خدایان بزرگتر است. او خداوند همهٔ پادشاهان است و اسرار پنهانی را آشکار می‌سازد، زیرا تو توانستی این راز را آشکار کنی.»

⁴⁷The king answered Daniel and said, Of a truth it is that your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, because thou wast able to reveal this secret.

⁴⁸ سپس به دانیال مقام بزرگی داد و هدایای بسیاری به او بخشید. او را حاکم بر تمام استان بابل و رئیس تمام مشاوران نمود. امّا دانیال از پادشاه خواهش کرد تا مسئولیّت استان بابل را به شدرک، میشک و عبدنغو بسپارد و خودش همچنان در دربار ماند.

⁴⁸Then the king made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

⁴⁹ امّا دانیال از پادشاه خواهش کرد تا مسئولیّت استان بابل را به شدرک، میشک و عبدنغو بسپارد و خودش همچنان در دربار ماند.

⁴⁹And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon. And Daniel was in the gate of the king.
