¹ داریوش تصمیم گرفت که یکصد و بیست استاندار در سراسر امپراتوری خود منصوب نماید.

¹It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be in all the kingdom;

² سه وزیر هم به سرپرستی آنها منصوب کرد که تمام فرمانداران حسابهای خود را به ایشان پس بدهند تا هیچ ضرری به پادشاه نرسد که یکی از آنها دانیال بود.

²and over these, three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom these satraps should render account, and that the king should suffer no loss.

³ دانیال از وزرا و فرمانداران دیگر بالاتر شده بود، زیرا دارای هوش و ذکاوت بیشتری بود. پادشاه درنظر داشت دانیال را مسئول تمام امپراتوری خود بگرداند.

³Now this Daniel surpassed the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to appoint him over the whole realm.

⁴ امّا وزیران و فرمانداران دنبال بهانه‌ای می‌گشتند تا در ادارهٔ امور مملکتی از دانیال شکایت کنند، ولی نتوانستند هیچ بهانه‌ای به دست بیاورند. چون دانیال کاملاً امین و درستکار بود و هرگز خطایی از او سر نمی‌زد.

⁴Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a pretext against Daniel with respect to the kingdom; but they could not find any pretext or fault; inasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

⁵ پس به یکدیگر گفتند ما نمی‌توانیم هیچ علّت و بهانه‌ای برضد دانیال پیدا کنیم مگر اینکه دربارهٔ قوانین مذهبی و خدای او، بهانه‌ای از او به دست بیاوریم.

⁵Then said these men, We shall not find any pretext against this Daniel, unless we find [it] against him touching the law of his God.

⁶ پس به حضور داریوش رفتند و گفتند: «پاینده باد داریوش پادشاه!

⁶Then these presidents and satraps came in a body to the king, and said thus unto him: King Darius, live for ever!

⁷ تمام وزرای مملکت، فرمانداران، مشاوران و حکّام با هم مشورت کرده‌اند که پادشاه حکمی صادر فرماید و در آن قدغن نماید که تا مدت سی روز هرکس از خدایی یا انسانی جز داریوش پادشاه، حاجتی درخواست بنماید، در چاه شیران انداخته شود.

⁷All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects, and the satraps, the counsellors, and the governors have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

⁸ حال، ای پادشاه، این حکم را صادر فرما و این نوشته را امضاء کن تا طبق قانون ماد‌ها و پارسیان این حکم باطل نگردد.»

⁸Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.

⁹ داریوش پادشاه، این فرمان را امضاء کرد.

⁹Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

¹⁰ وقتی دانیال فهمید که چنین فرمانی صادر شده است، به خانهٔ خود رفت و در بالاخانهٔ خود، پنجره‌ای را که به سوی اورشلیم بود، باز کرد و مانند گذشته، روزی سه مرتبه زانو زده و خدای خود را عبادت و پرستش می‌نمود.

¹⁰And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and, his windows being open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

¹¹ وقتی دشمنان او را دیدند که نزد خدا دعا می‌کند،

¹¹But those men came in a body, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.

¹² همگی به حضور پادشاه رفتند و گفتند: «پادشاها، آیا شما فرمان نداده‌اید که هرکس تا سی روز به غیراز تو از خدایی یا انسانی حاجتی بخواهد، در چاه شیران انداخته شود؟» پادشاه گفت: «بلی درست است و این فرمان طبق قانون ماد‌ها و پارسیان تغییر نمی‌پذیرد.»

¹²Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's decree: Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask [anything] of any god or man within thirty days, except of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.

¹³ آنها گفتند: «این دانیال که از تبعیدیان یهودیه می‌باشد از تو ای پادشاه و از فرمان تو اطاعت نمی‌کند. او مرتّباً روزی سه مرتبه دعا و نیایش می‌کند.»

¹³Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

¹⁴ پادشاه وقتی این را شنید بسیار پریشان خاطر شد و برای خلاصی دانیال فکر می‌کرد و تا غروب آفتاب کوشش می‌کرد که راهی برای نجات دانیال پیدا کند.

¹⁴Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore distressed thereby, and set his heart on Daniel to save him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

¹⁵ سپس آن مردان به حضور پادشاه برگشتند و گفتند: «پادشاها، می‌دانی که طبق قانون ماد‌ها و پارسیان، هر حکمی که توسط پادشاه صادر شود تغییر و تبدیل نمی‌پذیرد.»

¹⁵Then these men came in a body unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.

¹⁶ بنابراین پادشاه دستور داد دانیال را گرفته و او را در چاه شیران انداختند. پادشاه به دانیال گفت: «ای دانیال، امیدوارم خدایی که تو پیوسته او را پرستش می‌کنی، تو را نجات دهد.»

¹⁶Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast [him] into the den of lions. The king spoke and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will save thee.

¹⁷ سپس سنگی آوردند و آن را بر دهانهٔ چاه گذاشتند و پادشاه آن را با مُهر خود و مُهر وزرای خود مُهر کرد تا فرمان دربارهٔ دانیال تغییر نکند.

¹⁷And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his nobles, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

¹⁸ بعد از آن پادشاه به کاخ خود برگشت و تا صبح روزه گرفت و اجازه نداد که وسایل عیش و عشرت برای او بیاورند و تا صبح نتوانست بخوابد.

¹⁸Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were concubines brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

¹⁹ صبح زود پادشاه بلند شد و با عجله بر سر چاه شیران رفت.

¹⁹Then the king arose with the light at break of day, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

²⁰ وقتی به سر چاه رسید، با صدای گرفته‌ای دانیال را صدا کرد و گفت: «ای دانیال، بندهٔ خدای زنده، آیا خدایی‌ که تو پیوسته او را پرستش می‌کنی توانسته است تو را نجات بدهد؟»

²⁰And when he came near unto the den, he cried with a mournful voice unto Daniel: the king spoke and said unto Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, hath thy God whom thou servest continually been able to save thee from the lions?

²¹ دانیال جواب داد: «پادشاه پاینده باد!

²¹Then Daniel spoke unto the king, O king, live for ever!

²² خدا فرشتهٔ خود را فرستاد و او دهان شیرها را بست تا به من صدمه‌ای نرسانند. زیرا که نه در پیشگاه او گناهی کرده‌ام و نه در حضور تو خطایی مرتکب شده‌ام.»

²²My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocence was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

²³ پادشاه بسیار خوشحال شد و دستور داد دانیال را از چاه بیرون بیاورند. دانیال را از چاه بیرون کشیدند و دیدند که هیچ صدمه‌ای به او نرسیده است زیرا که بر خدا توکّل کرده بود.

²³Thereupon was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

²⁴ سپس پادشاه دستور داد تمام کسانی را که از دانیال شکایت کرده بودند، آوردند و همهٔ آنها را با زن و فرزندانشان در چاه شیران انداختند. قبل از اینکه آنها به ته چاه برسند، شیرها حمله کرده و تمام استخوانهای آنها را خُرد کردند.

²⁴And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces ere they came to the bottom of the den.

²⁵ بعد از آن، داریوش پادشاه به تمام ملّتها و اقوام به زبانهای گوناگون ساکنان سراسر زمین نوشت: «صلح و سلامتی بر شما باد!

²⁵Then king Darius wrote unto all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.

²⁶ من فرمان می‌دهم که در سراسر امپراتوری من، تمام مردم باید در حضور خدای دانیال ترسان و لرزان باشند، زیرا: «او خدای زنده است. سلطنت او هرگز از بین نخواهد رفت و تا به ابد سلطنت خواهد کرد قدرتش هرگز به انتها نخواهد رسید.

²⁶I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

²⁷ او نجات می‌دهد و آزاد می‌کند. در آسمان و زمین نشانه‌ها و شگفتی‌ها به عمل می‌آورد. او دانیال را از چنگ شیرها نجات داد.» بنابراین دانیال در زمان سلطنت داریوش و کوروش پارسی موفّق و کامیاب بود.

²⁷He saveth and delivereth, and he worketh signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth: who hath saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

²⁸ بنابراین دانیال در زمان سلطنت داریوش و کوروش پارسی موفّق و کامیاب بود.

²⁸And this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
