¹Urmăriţi dragostea. Umblaţi şi după darurile duhovniceşti, dar mai ales să proorociţi.

¹Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

²În adevăr, cine vorbeşte în altă limbă, nu vorbeşte oamenilor, ci lui Dumnezeu; căci nimeni nu -l înţelege, şi, cu duhul, el spune taine.

²For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

³Cine prooroceşte, dimpotrivă, vorbeşte oamenilor, spre zidire, sfătuire şi mîngîiere.

³But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.

⁴Cine vorbeşte în altă limbă, se zideşte pe sine însuş; dar cine prooroceşte, zideşte sufleteşte Biserica.

⁴He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.

⁵Aş dori ca toţi să vorbiţi în alte limbi, dar mai ales să proorociţi. Cine prooroceşte, este mai mare decît cine vorbeşte în alte limbi; afară numai dacă tîlmăceşte aceste limbi, pentruca să capete Biserica zidire sufletească.

⁵Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.

⁶În adevăr, fraţilor, de ce folos v'aş fi eu, dacă aş veni la voi vorbind în alte limbi, şi dacă cuvîntul meu nu v'ar aduce nici descoperire, nici cunoştinţă, nici proorocie, nici învăţătură?

⁶But now, brothers, The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?

⁷Chiar şi lucrurile neînsufleţite, cari dau un sunet, fie un fluier sau o alăută: dacă nu dau sunete desluşite, cine va cunoaşte ce se cîntă cu fluierul sau cu alăuta?

⁷Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?

⁸Şi dacă trîmbiţa dă un sunet încurcat, cine se va pregăti de luptă?

⁸For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?

⁹Tot aşa şi voi, dacă nu rostiţi cu limba o vorbă înţeleasă, cum se va pricepe ce spuneţi? Atunci parcă aţi vorbi în vînt.

⁹So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.

¹⁰Sînt multe feluri de limbi în lume, totuş niciuna din ele nu este fără sunete înţelese.

¹⁰There are, it may be, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them is without meaning.

¹¹Dar dacă nu cunosc înţelesul sunetului, voi fi un străin pentru cel ce vorbeşte, şi cel ce vorbeşte, va fi un străin pentru mine.

¹¹If then I don’t know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.

¹²Tot aşa şi voi, fiindcă rîvniţi după daruri duhovniceşti, să căutaţi să le aveţi din belşug, în vederea zidirii sufleteşti a Bisericii.

¹²So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.

¹³De aceea, cine vorbeşte în altă limbă, să se roage să aibă şi darul s'o tălmăcească.

¹³Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.

¹⁴Fiindcă, dacă mă rog în altă limbă, duhul meu se roagă, dar mintea mea este fără rod.

¹⁴For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

¹⁵Ce este de făcut atunci? Mă voi ruga cu duhul, dar mă voi ruga şi cu mintea; voi cînta cu duhul, dar voi cînta şi cu mintea.

¹⁵What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

¹⁶Altmintrelea, dacă aduci mulţămiri cu duhul, cum va răspunde ,,Amin`` la mulţămirile, pe cari le aduci tu, cel lipsit de daruri, cînd el nu ştie ce spui?

¹⁶Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?

¹⁷Negreşit, tu mulţămeşti lui Dumnezeu foarte frumos, dar celălalt nu rămîne zidit sufleteşte.

¹⁷For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.

¹⁸Mulţămesc lui Dumnezeu că eu vorbesc în alte limbi mai mult decît voi toţi.

¹⁸I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.

¹⁹Dar în Biserică, voiesc mai bine să spun cinci cuvinte înţelese, ca să învăţ şi pe alţii, decît să spun zece mii de cuvinte în altă limbă.

¹⁹However in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.

²⁰Fraţilor, nu fiţi copii la minte; ci, la răutate, fiţi prunci; iar la minte, fiţi oameni mari.

²⁰Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.

²¹În Lege este scris: ,,Voi vorbi norodului acestuia prin altă limbă şi prin buze străine; şi nici aşa nu Mă vor asculta, zice Domnul.``

²¹In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. Not even thus will they hear me, says the Lord.” Isaiah 28:11-12

²²Prin urmare, limbile sînt un semn nu pentru cei credincioşi, ci pentru cei necredincioşi. Proorocia, dimpotrivă, este un semn nu pentru cei necredincioşi, ci pentru cei credincioşi.

²²Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.

²³Deci, dacă s'ar aduna toată Biserica la un loc, şi toţi ar vorbi în alte limbi, şi ar intra şi de cei fără daruri, sau necredincioşi, n'ar zice ei că sînteţi nebuni?

²³If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?

²⁴Dar dacă toţi proorocesc, şi intră vreun necredincios sau vreunul fără daruri, el este încredinţat de toţi, este judecat de toţi.

²⁴But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.

²⁵Tainele inimii lui sînt descoperite, aşa că va cădea cu faţa la pămînt, se va închina lui Dumnezeu, şi va mărturisi că, în adevăr, Dumnezeu este în mijlocul vostru.

²⁵And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

²⁶Ce este de făcut atunci, fraţilor? Cînd vă adunaţi laolaltă, dacă unul din voi are o cîntare, altul o învăţătură, altul o descoperire, altul o vorbă în altă limbă, altul o tălmăcire, toate să se facă spre zidirea sufletească.

²⁶What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.

²⁷Dacă sînt unii, cari vorbesc în altă limbă, să vorbească numai cîte doi sau cel mult trei, fiecare la rînd: şi unul să tălmăcească.

²⁷If any man speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.

²⁸Dacă nu este cine să tălmăcească, să tacă în Biserică, şi să-şi vorbească numai lui însuş şi lui Dumnezeu.

²⁸But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself, and to God.

²⁹Cît despre prooroci, să vorbească doi sau trei, şi ceilalţi să judece.

²⁹Let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.

³⁰Şi dacă este făcută o descoperire unuia care şade jos, cel dintîi să tacă.

³⁰But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.

³¹Fiindcă puteţi să proorociţi toţi, dar unul după altul, pentruca toţi să capete învăţătură şi toţi să fie îmbărbătaţi.

³¹For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.

³²Duhurile proorocilor sînt supuse proorocilor;

³²The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,

³³căci Dumnezeu nu este un Dumnezeu al neorînduielii, ci al păcii, ca în toate Bisericile sfinţilor.

³³for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the assemblies of the saints,

³⁴Femeile să tacă în adunări, căci lor nu le este îngăduit să ia cuvîntul în ele, ci să fie supuse, cum zice şi Legea.

³⁴let your wives keep silent in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the law also says.

³⁵Dacă voiesc să capete învăţătură asupra unui lucru, să întrebe pe bărbaţii lor acasă; căci este ruşine pentru o femeie să vorbească în Biserică.

³⁵If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to chatter in the assembly.

³⁶Ce? Dela voi a pornit Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu? Sau numai pînă la voi a ajuns el?

³⁶What? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?

³⁷Dacă crede cineva că este prooroc sau însuflat de Dumnezeu, să înţeleagă că ce vă scriu eu, este o poruncă a Domnului.

³⁷If any man thinks himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.

³⁸Şi dacă cineva nu înţelege, să nu înţeleagă!

³⁸But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

³⁹Astfel, deci, fraţilor, rîvniţi după proorocire, fără să împedecaţi vorbirea în alte limbi.

³⁹Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages.

⁴⁰Dar toate să se facă în chip cuviincios şi cu rînduială.

⁴⁰Let all things be done decently and in order.
