¹Solomon s'a încuscrit cu Faraon, împăratul Egiptului. A luat de nevastă pe fata lui Faraon, şi a adus -o în cetatea lui David, pînă şi -a isprăvit de zidit casa lui, casa Domnului, şi zidul dimprejurul Ierusalimului.

¹Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Yahweh, and the wall of Jerusalem all around.

²Poporul nu aducea jertfe decît pe înălţimi, căci pînă pe vremea aceasta nu se zidise încă o casă în Numele Domnului.

²Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of Yahweh until those days.

³Solomon iubea pe Domnul, şi se ţinea de obiceiurile tatălui său David. Numai că aducea jertfe şi tămîie pe înălţimi.

³Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

⁴Împăratul s'a dus la Gabaon să aducă jertfe acolo, căci era cea mai însemnată înălţime. Solomon a adus o mie de arderi de tot pe altar.

⁴The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

⁵La Gabaon, Domnul S'a arătat în vis lui Solomon noaptea, şi Dumnezeu i -a zis: ,,Cere ce vrei să-ţi dau.``

⁵In Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”

⁶Solomon a răspuns: ,,Tu ai arătat o mare bunăvoinţă faţă de robul Tău David, tatăl meu, pentrucă umbla înaintea Ta în credincioşie, în dreptate şi în curăţie de inimă faţă de Tine; i-ai păstrat această mare bună voinţă, şi i-ai dat un fiu, care şade pe scaunul lui de domnie, cum se vede astăzi.

⁶Solomon said, “You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

⁷Acum Doamne, Dumnezeul meu, Tu ai pus pe robul Tău să împărăţească în locul tatălui meu David; şi eu nu sînt decît un tînăr, nu sînt încercat.

⁷Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I don’t know how to go out or come in.

⁸Robul Tău este în mijlocul poporului pe care l-ai ales, popor foarte mare, care nu poate fi nici socotit, nici numărat, din pricina mulţimii lui.

⁸Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can’t be numbered nor counted for multitude.

⁹Dă dar robului Tău o inimă pricepută, ca să judece pe poporul Tău, să deosebească binele de rău! Căci cine ar putea să judece pe poporul Tău, pe poporul acesta aşa de mare la număr!``

⁹Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?”

¹⁰Cererea aceasta a lui Solomon a plăcut Domnului.

¹⁰The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

¹¹Şi Dumnezeu a zis: ,,Fiindcă lucrul acesta îl ceri, fiindcă nu ceri pentru tine nici viaţă lungă, nici bogăţii, nici moartea vrăjmaşilor tăi, ci ceri pricepere, ca să faci dreptate,

¹¹God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice;

¹²voi face după cuvîntul tău. Îţi voi da o inimă înţeleaptă şi pricepută, aşa cum n'a fost nimeni înaintea ta şi nu se va scula nimeni niciodată ca tine.

¹²behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you.

¹³Mai mult, îţi voi da şi ce n'ai cerut: bogăţii şi slavă, aşa încît în tot timpul vieţii tale nu va fi niciun împărat ca tine.

¹³I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you, all your days.

¹⁴Şi dacă vei umbla în căile Mele, păzind legile şi poruncile Mele, cum a făcut David, tatăl tău, îţi voi lungi zilele.``

¹⁴If you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”

¹⁵Solomon s'a deşteptat. Acesta a fost visul. Solomon s'a întors la Ierusalim, şi s'a înfăţişat înaintea chivotului legămîntului Domnului. A adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de mulţămire, şi a dat un ospăţ tuturor slujitorilor lui.

¹⁵Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

¹⁶Atunci au venit două femei curve la împărat, şi s'au înfăţişat înaintea lui.

¹⁶Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king, and stood before him.

¹⁷Una din femei a zis: ,,Rogu-mă, domnul meu, eu şi femeia aceasta locuiam în aceeaş casă, şi am născut lîngă ea în casă.

¹⁷The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. I delivered a child with her in the house.

¹⁸După trei zile, femeia aceasta a născut şi ea. Locuiam împreună, niciun străin nu era cu noi în casă, nu eram decît noi amîndouă.

¹⁸It happened the third day after I delivered, that this woman delivered also. We were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, just us two in the house.

¹⁹Peste noapte, fiul acestei femei a murit, pentrucă se culcase peste el.

¹⁹This woman’s child died in the night, because she lay on it.

²⁰Ea s'a sculat pela mijlocul nopţii, a luat pe fiul meu de lîngă mine, pe cînd dormea roaba ta, şi l -a culcat la sînul ei: iar pe fiul ei, care murise, l -a culcat la sînul meu.

²⁰She arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.

²¹Dimineaţa, m'am sculat să dau ţîţă copilului; şi iată că era mort. M'am uitat cu luare-aminte la el dimineaţa; şi iată că nu era fiul meu, pe care -l născusem.``

²¹When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I bore.”

²²Cealaltă femeie a zis: ,,Ba nu; fiul meu este cel viu, iar fiul tău cel mort.`` Dar cea dintîi a răspuns: ,,Ba nicidecum! fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu.`` Aşa au vorbit ele înaintea împăratului.

²²The other woman said, “No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son.” This said, “No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son.” Thus they spoke before the king.

²³Împăratul a zis: ,,Una zice: ,Fiul meu este cel viu, iar fiul tău este cel mort.` Şi cealaltă zice: ,Ba nicidecum! fiul tău este cel mort, iar fiul meu este cel viu.``

²³Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead;’ and the other says, ‘No; but your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’”

²⁴Apoi a adăugat: ,,Aduceţi-mi o sabie.`` Au adus o sabie înaintea împăratului.

²⁴The king said, “Get me a sword.” They brought a sword before the king.

²⁵Şi împăratul a zis: ,,Tăiaţi în două copilul cel viu, şi daţi o jumătate uneia şi o jumătate celeilalte.``

²⁵The king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.”

²⁶Atunci femeia al cărei copil era viu, a simţit că i se rupe inima pentru copil, şi a zis împăratului: ,,Ah! domnul meu, dă -i mai bine ei copilul cel viu, şi nu -l omorî!`` Dar cealaltă a zis: ,,Să nu fie nici al meu nici al tău; tăiaţi -l!``

²⁶Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way kill it!” But the other said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it.”

²⁷Şi împăratul, luînd cuvîntul, a zis: ,,Daţi celei dintîi copilul cel viu, şi nu -l omorîţi. Ea este mama lui.``

²⁷Then the king answered, “Give her the living child, and in no way kill it. She is its mother.”

²⁸Tot Israelul a auzit de hotărîrea pe care o rostise împăratul. Şi s'au temut de împărat, căci au văzut că înţelepciunea lui Dumnezeu era în el, povăţuindu -l în judecăţile lui.

²⁸All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
