¹Zifiţii s'au dus la Saul la Ghibea, şi au zis: ,,Iată că David este ascuns pe dealul Hachila, în faţa pustiei.``

¹The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?”

²Saul s'a sculat şi s'a pogorît în pustia Zif, cu trei mii de oameni aleşi din Israel, ca să caute pe David în pustia Zif.

²Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

³A tăbărît pe dealul Hachila, în faţa pustiei, lîngă drum. David era în pustie; şi, înţelegînd că Saul merge în urmărirea lui în pustie,

³Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

⁴a trimes nişte iscoade, şi a aflat că în adevăr Saul venise.

⁴David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come.

⁵Atunci David s'a sculat şi a venit la locul unde tăbărîse Saul, şi a văzut locul unde era culcat Saul, cu Abner, fiul lui Ner, căpetenia oştirii lui. Saul era culcat în cort în mijlocul taberii şi poporul era tăbărît în jurul lui.

⁵David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army: and Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him.

⁶David a luat cuvîntul, şi vorbind lui Ahimelec, Hetitul, şi lui Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei şi fratele lui Ioab, a zis: ,,Cine vrea să se pogoare cu mine în tabără la Saul?`` Şi Abişai a răspuns: ,,Eu, mă voi pogorî cu tine.``

⁶Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?” Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

⁷David şi Abişai s'au dus noaptea la popor. Şi iată că Saul era culcat şi dormea în cort în mijlocul taberii, şi suliţa lui era înfiptă în pămînt la capul lui. Abner şi poporul lui erau culcaţi în jurul lui.

⁷So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.

⁸Abişai a zis lui David: ,,Dumnezeu dă astăzi pe vrăjmaşul tău în mînile tale; lasă-mă, te rog, să -l lovesc cu suliţa mea, şi să -l pironesc dintr'o lovitură în pămînt, ca să n'am nevoie să -i mai dau alta.``

⁸Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time.”

⁹Dar David a zis lui Abişai: ,,Nu -l omorî! Căci cine ar putea pune mîna pe unsul Domnului şi să rămînă nepedepsit?``

⁹David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

¹⁰Şi David a zis: ,,Viu este Domnul, că numai Domnul îl poate lovi; fie că -i va veni ziua să moară, fie că se va pogorî... într'un cîmp de bătaie şi va peri.

¹⁰David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

¹¹Să mă ferească Domnul, să pun mîna pe unsul Domnului! Ia numai suliţa dela căpătîiul lui, cu urciorul cu apă, şi să plecăm.``

¹¹Yahweh forbid that I should put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go.”

¹²David a luat dar suliţa şi urciorul cu apă de la căpătîiul lui Saul, şi au plecat. Nimeni nu i -a văzut, nici n'a băgat de seamă nimic, şi nimeni nu s'a deşteptat, căci Domnul îi cufundase pe toţi într'un somn adînc.

¹²So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head; and they went away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh was fallen on them.

¹³David a trecut de cealaltă parte, şi a ajuns departe pe vîrful muntelui, la o mare depărtare de tabără.

¹³Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them;

¹⁴Şi a strigat poporului şi lui Abner, fiul lui Ner: ,,N'auzi tu, Abner?`` Abner a răspuns: ,,Cine eşti tu care strigi către împăratul?``

¹⁴and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Don’t you answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who cries to the king?”

¹⁵Şi David a zis lui Abner: ,,Oare nu eşti tu bărbat? Şi cine este ca tine în Israel? Pentruce atunci n'ai păzit pe împărat, stăpînul tău? Căci cineva din popor a venit să omoare pe împăratul, stăpînul tău.

¹⁵David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.

¹⁶Ce ai făcut tu nu este bine. Viu este Domnul, că sînteţi vrednici de moarte, căci n'aţi vegheat asupra stăpînului vostru, asupra unsului Domnului. Uită-te acum unde este suliţa împăratului şi ulciorul de apă, cari erau la căpătîiul lui.``

¹⁶This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head.”

¹⁷Saul a cunoscut glasul lui David, şi a zis: ,,Glasul tău este, fiul meu David?`` Şi David a răspuns: ,,Glasul meu, împărate, domnul meu!``

¹⁷Saul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

¹⁸Şi a zis: ,,Pentruce urmăreşte domnul meu pe robul său? Ce-am făcut, şi cu ce sînt vinovat?

¹⁸He said, “Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?

¹⁹Să binevoiască acum împăratul, domnul meu, să asculte cuvintele robului său: ,Dacă Domnul este Cel ce te atîţă împotriva mea, să primească mirosul unui dar de mîncare dela noi; dar dacă oamenii te atîţă, blestemaţi să fie înaintea Domnului, fiindcă ei mă izgonesc azi ca să mă deslipească de moştenirea... Domnului, zicîndu-mi: ,Du-te de slujeşte unor dumnezei străini!`

¹⁹Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’

²⁰Oh! să nu-mi cadă sîngele pe pămînt departe de Faţa Domnului! Căci împăratul lui Israel a pornit să mă caute ca pe un purice, cum ar urmări o potîrniche în munţi.``

²⁰Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Yahweh; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

²¹Saul a zis: ,,Am păcătuit; întoarce-te, fiul meu David, căci nu-ţi voi mai face rău, fiindcă în ziua aceasta viaţa mea a fost scumpă înaintea ta. Am lucrat ca un nebun, şi am făcut o mare greşală.``

²¹Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.”

²²David a răspuns: ,,Iată suliţa împăratului; să vină unul din oamenii tăi s'o ia.

²²David answered, “Behold the spear, O king! Then let one of the young men come over and get it.

²³Domnul va răsplăti fiecăruia după dreptatea lui şi după credincioşia lui: căci Domnul te dăduse azi în mînile mele, şi eu n'am vrut să pun mîna pe unsul Domnului.

²³Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed.

²⁴Şi după cum azi viaţa ta a avut un mare preţ înaintea mea, tot aşa şi viaţa mea va avea un mare preţ înaintea Domnului, şi El mă va izbăvi din orice necaz.``

²⁴Behold, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of Yahweh, and let him deliver me out of all oppression.”

²⁵Saul a zis lui David: ,,Fii binecuvîntat, fiul meu David! Tu vei face lucruri mari şi vei birui.`` David şi -a văzut de drum, şi Saul s'a întors acasă.

²⁵Then Saul said to David, “You are blessed, my son David. You shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
