¹Iosia avea opt ani cînd a ajuns împărat, şi a domnit treizeci şi unu de ani la Ierusalim.

¹Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

²El a făcut ce este bine înaintea Domnului şi a umblat în căile tatălui său David: nu s'a abătut dela ele nici la dreapta nici la stînga.

²He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

³În al optulea an al domniei lui, pe cînd era încă tînăr, a început să caute pe Dumnezeul tatălui său David. Şi în doisprezecelea an, a început să curăţească Iuda şi Ierusalimul de înălţimi, de idolii Astarteei, de chipuri cioplite şi de chipuri turnate.

³For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherim, and the engraved images, and the molten images.

⁴Au dărîmat înaintea lui altarele Baalilor, şi au tăiat stîlpii închinaţi soarelui, cari erau deasupra lor; a sfărîmat idolii Astarteei, chipurile cioplite şi chipurile turnate, le -a făcut praf, a presărat praful pe mormintele celor ce le aduseseră jertfe,

⁴They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the incense altars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherim, and the engraved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

⁵şi a ars oasele preoţilor pe altarele lor. Astfel a curăţit Iuda şi Ierusalimul.

⁵He burnt the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem.

⁶În cetăţile lui Manase, lui Efraim, lui Simeon, şi chiar lui Neftali, pretutindeni, în mijlocul dărîmăturilor lor,

⁶He did this in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, around in their ruins.

⁷a dărîmat altarele, a făcut bucăţi idolii Astarteei şi chipurile cioplite, le -a făcut praf, şi a tăiat toţi stîlpii închinaţi soarelui în toată ţara lui Israel. Apoi s'a întors la Ierusalim.

⁷He broke down the altars, and beat the Asherim and the engraved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

⁸În al optsprezecelea an al domniei lui, dupăce a curăţit ţara şi casa, a trimes pe Şafan, fiul lui Aţalia, pe Maaseia, căpetenia cetăţii şi pe Ioah, fiul lui Ioahaz, arhivarul, să dreagă casa Domnului, Dumnezeului său.

⁸Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of Yahweh his God.

⁹S'au dus la marele preot Hilchia, şi au dat argintul adus în Casa lui Dumnezeu, pe care -l strînseseră Leviţii păzitori ai pragului, dela Manase şi Efraim, şi dela toată cealaltă parte a lui Israel, şi dela tot Iuda şi Beniamin şi dela locuitorii Ierusalimului.

⁹They came to Hilkiah the high priest, and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

¹⁰L-au dat în mînile meşterilor însărcinaţi cu facerea lucrării în Casa Domnului. Aceştia l-au dat lucrătorilor cari munceau la dregerea Casei Domnului,

¹⁰They delivered it into the hand of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of Yahweh; and the workmen who labored in the house of Yahweh gave it to mend and repair the house;

¹¹iar ei l-au dat tîmplarilor şi zidarilor, ca să cumpere pietre cioplite şi lemne pentru grinzi şi pentru căptuşitul clădirilor pe cari le stricaseră împăraţii lui Iuda.

¹¹even to the carpenters and to the builders gave they it, to buy cut stone, and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

¹²Oamenii aceştia au lucrat cinstit în lucrul lor. Erau puşi supt privegherea lui Iahat şi Obadia, Leviţi din fiii lui Merari, şi a lui Zaharia şi Meşulam, din fiii Chehatiţilor. Toţi aceia dintre Leviţi, cari ştiau să cînte bine,

¹²The men did the work faithfully: and their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and others of the Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music.

¹³vegheau asupra lucrărilor şi cîrmuiau pe toţi lucrătorii cari aveau de făcut felurite lucrări. Mai erau şi alţi Leviţi, logofeţi, dregători şi uşieri.

¹³Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and set forward all who did the work in every kind of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

¹⁴În clipa cînd au scos argintul care fusese adus în Casa Domnului, preotul Hilchia a găsit cartea Legii Domnului, dată prin Moise.

¹⁴When they brought out the money that was brought into the house of Yahweh, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of Yahweh given by Moses.

¹⁵Atunci Hilchia a luat cuvîntul şi a zis logofătului Şafan: ,,Am găsit cartea Legii în Casa Domnului.`` Şi Hilchia a dat lui Şafan cartea.

¹⁵Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of Yahweh.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

¹⁶Şafan a adus împăratului cartea. Şi cînd a dat socoteală împăratului, a zis: ,,Slujitorii tăi au făcut tot ce li s'a poruncit.

¹⁶Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, “All that was committed to your servants, they are doing.

¹⁷Au strîns argintul care se afla în Casa Domnului, şi l-au dat în mînile priveghetorilor şi lucrătorilor.``

¹⁷They have emptied out the money that was found in the house of Yahweh, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.”

¹⁸Logofătul Şafan a mai spus împăratului: ,,Preotul Hilchia mi -a dat o carte.`` Şi Şafan a citit -o înaintea împăratului.

¹⁸Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a book.” Shaphan read therein before the king.

¹⁹Cînd a auzit împăratul cuvintele Legii, şi -a sfîşiat hainele.

¹⁹It happened, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he tore his clothes.

²⁰Şi împăratul a dat următoarea poruncă lui Hilchia, lui Ahicam, fiul lui Şafan, lui Abdon, fiul lui Mica, lui Şafan, logofătul, şi lui Asaia, slujitorul împăratului:

²⁰The king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,

²¹,,Duceţi-vă şi întrebaţi pe Domnul pentru mine şi pentru rămăşiţa lui Israel şi Iuda, cu privire la cuvintele cărţii acesteia care s'a găsit. Căci mare mînie s'a vărsat peste noi din partea Domnului, pentrucă părinţii noştri n'au ţinut cuvîntul Domnului, şi n'au împlinit tot ce este scris în cartea aceasta.

²¹“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Yahweh, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

²²Hilchia şi cei trimişi de împărat s'au dus la proorociţa Hulda, nevasta lui Şalum, fiul lui Tochehat, fiul lui Hasra, străjerul veşmintelor. Ea locuia la Ierusalim, în cealaltă mahala a cetăţii. Dupăce au spus ce aveau de spus,

²²So Hilkiah, and they whom the king had commanded, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter;) and they spoke to her to that effect.

²³ea le -a răspuns: ,,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ,,Spuneţi omului care v'a trimes la mine:

²³She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,

²⁴,,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ,,Iată, voi trimete nenorociri peste locul acesta şi peste locuitorii lui, şi anume toate blestemele scrise în cartea care s'a citit înaintea împăratului lui Iuda.

²⁴“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah.

²⁵Pentrucă M'au părăsit şi au adus tămîie altor dumnezei, mîniindu-Mă prin toate lucrările mînilor lor, mînia Mea s'a vărsat asupra acestui loc, şi nu se va stinge.``

²⁵Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore is my wrath poured out on this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”’

²⁶Dar să spuneţi împăratului lui Iuda care v'a trimes să întrebaţi pe Domnul: ,,Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, cu privire la cuvintele pe cari le-ai auzit:

²⁶But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: “As touching the words which you have heard,

²⁷,,Pentrucă ţi s'a înduioşat inima, pentrucă te-ai smerit înaintea lui Dumnezeu, cînd ai auzit cuvintele rostite de El împotriva acestui loc şi împotriva locuitorilor lui, pentrucă te-ai smerit înaintea Mea, pentrucă ţi-ai sfîşiat hainele şi ai plîns înaintea Mea, şi Eu, am auzit, -zice Domnul. -

²⁷because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,” says Yahweh.

²⁸Iată, te voi strînge lîngă părinţii tăi, vei fi adăugat în pace în mormîntul tău şi nu vei vedea cu ochii tăi toate nenorocirile pe cari le voi trimete peste locul acesta şi peste locuitorii lui.`` Ei au adus împăratului răspunsul acesta.

²⁸“Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil that I will bring on this place, and on its inhabitants.”’” They brought back word to the king.

²⁹Împăratul a strîns pe toţi bătrînii din Iuda şi din Ierusalim.

²⁹Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

³⁰Apoi s'a suit la Casa Domnului, cu toţi oamenii lui Iuda şi cu locuitorii Ierusalimului, cu preoţii şi Leviţii, şi cu tot poporul, dela cel mai mare pînă la cel mai mic. A citit înaintea lor toate cuvintele cărţii legămîntului, care se găsise în casa Domnului.

³⁰The king went up to the house of Yahweh, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, both great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of Yahweh.

³¹Împăratul stătea pe scaunul lui împărătesc, şi a încheiat legămînt înaintea Domnului, îndatorindu-se să urmeze pe Domnul şi să păzească poruncile Lui, învăţăturile Lui, şi legile Lui, din toată inima şi din tot sufletul lui, şi să împlinească cuvintele legămîntului, scrise în cartea aceasta.

³¹The king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book.

³²Şi a făcut să intre în legămînt toţi cei ce se aflau la Ierusalim şi în Beniamin. Şi locuitorii Ierusalimului au lucrat după legămîntul lui Dumnezeu, legămîntul Dumnezeului părinţilor lor.

³²He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

³³Iosia a îndepărtat toate urîciunile din toate ţările copiilor lui Israel, şi a făcut ca toţi cei ce se aflau în Israel să slujească Domnului, Dumnezeului lor. În tot timpul vieţii lui, nu s'au abătut dela Domnul, Dumnezeul părinţilor lor.

³³Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Yahweh their God. All his days they didn’t depart from following Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
