¹Domnul a trimes pe Natan la David. Şi Natan a venit la el şi i -a zis: ,,Într'o cetate erau doi oameni, unul bogat şi altul sărac.

¹Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

²Bogatul avea foarte multe oi şi foarte mulţi boi.

²The rich man had very many flocks and herds,

³Săracul n'avea nimic decît o mieluşa, pe care o cumpărase; o hrănea, şi o creştea la el împreună cu copiii lui; ea mînca din aceeaş bucată de pîne cu el, bea din acelaş pahar cu el, dormea la sînul lui, şi o privea ca pe fata lui.

³but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.

⁴A venit un călător la omul acela bogat. Şi bogatul nu s'a îndurat să se atingă de oile sau de boii lui, ca să pregătească un prînz călătorului care venise la el; ci a luat oaia săracului, şi a gătit -o pentru omul care venise la el.``

⁴A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him.”

⁵David s'a aprins foarte tare de mînie împotriva omului acestuia, şi a zis lui Natan: ,,,Viu este Domnul că omul care a făcut lucrul acesta este vrednic de moarte.

⁵David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die!

⁶Şi să dea înapoi patru miei, pentrucă a săvîrşit fapta aceasta, şi n'a avut milă.``

⁶He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!”

⁷Şi Natan a zis lui David: ,,Tu eşti omul acesta!`` Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ,Eu te-am uns împărat peste Israel, şi te-am scăpat din mîna lui Saul;

⁷Nathan said to David, “You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

⁸te-am făcut stăpîn pe casa stăpînului tău, am pus la sînul tău nevestele stăpînului tău, şi ţi-am dat casa lui Israel şi Iuda. Şi dacă ar fi fost puţin atîta, aş mai fi adăugat.

⁸I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.

⁹Pentruce dar au dispreţuit tu cuvîntul Domnului, făcînd ce este rău înaintea Lui? Ai lovit cu sabia pe Urie..., Hetitul; ai luat de nevastă pe nevastă-sa, şi pe el l-ai ucis cu sabia fiilor lui Amon.

⁹Why have you despised the word of Yahweh, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

¹⁰Acum niciodată nu se va depărta sabia din casa ta, pentrucă M'ai dispreţuit, şi pentrucă ai luat de nevastă pe nevasta lui Urie, Hetitul.`

¹⁰Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’

¹¹Aşa vorbeşte Domnul. ,Iată, din casa ta voi ridica nenorocirea împotriva ta, şi voi lua de subt ochii tăi, pe nevestele tale şi le voi da altuia care se va culca cu ele în faţa soarelui acestuia.

¹¹“This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

¹²Căci ai lucrat pe ascuns; Eu însă voi face lucru acesta în faţa întregului Israel şi în faţa soarelui.``

¹²For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’”

¹³David a zis lui Natan: ,,Am păcătuit împotriva Domnului!`` Şi Natan a zis lui David: ,,Domnul îţi iartă păcatul..., nu vei muri.

¹³David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.

¹⁴Dar, pentrucă ai făcut pe vrăjmaşii Domnului să -L hulească, săvîrşind fapta aceasta, fiul care ţi s'a născut, va muri.``

¹⁴However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”

¹⁵Şi Natan a plecat acasă. Domnul a lovit copilul pe care -l născuse lui David nevasta lui Uirie, şi a fost greu bolnav.

¹⁵Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick.

¹⁶David s'a rugat lui Dumnezeu pentru copil, şi a postit; şi cînd a venit acasă, toată noaptea a stat culcat pe pămînt.

¹⁶David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.

¹⁷Bătrînii casei au stăruit de el să se scoale dela pămînt; dar n'a voit, şi n'a mîncat nimic cu ei.

¹⁷The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

¹⁸A şaptea zi, copilul a murit. Slujitorii lui David s'au temut să -i dea de veste că a murit copilul. Căci ziceau: ,,Cînd copilul trăia încă, i-am vorbit, şi nu ne -a ascultat: cum să îndrăznim să -i spunem: ,A murit copilul?` Are să se întristeze şi mai mult.``

¹⁸It happened on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?”

¹⁹David a băgat de seamă că slujitorii lui vorbeau în şoaptă între ei, şi a înţeles că murise copilul. El a zis slujitorilor săi: ,,A murit copilul?`` Şi ei au răspuns: ,,A murit.``

¹⁹But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”

²⁰Atunci David s'a sculat de la pămînt. S'a spălat, s'a uns, şi şi -a schimbat hainele; apoi s'a dus în casa Domnului, şi s'a închinat. Întorcîndu-se acasă, a cerut să i se dea să mănînce, şi a mîncat.

²⁰Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of Yahweh, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.

²¹Slujitrii lui i-au zis: ,,Ce însemnează ceeace faci? Cînd trăia copilul, posteai şi plîngeai; şi acum, cînd a murit copilul, te scoli şi mănînci!``

²¹Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.”

²²El a răspuns: ,,Cînd trăia copilul, posteam şi plîneam, căci ziceam: ,Cine ştie dacă nu Se va îndura Domnul de mine şi dacă nu va trăi copilul?`

²²He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’

²³Acum, cînd a murit, pentruce să mai postesc? Pot să -l întorc în viaţă? Eu mă voi duce la el, dar el nu se va întoarce la mine.``

²³But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

²⁴David a mîngîiat pe nevastă-sa Bet-Şeba, şi a intrat la ea şi s'a culcat cu ea. Ea a născut un fiu, pe care l -a numit Solomon, şi care a fost iubit de Domnul.

²⁴David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;

²⁵El l -a încredinţat în mînile proorocului Natan, şi Natan i -a pus numele Iedidia (Iubitul Domnului), pentru Domnul.

²⁵and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake.

²⁶Ioab, care împresura Raba fiilor lui Amon, a pus mîna pe cetatea împărătească,

²⁶Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

²⁷şi a trimes soli lui David să -i spună: ,,Am început lupta împotriva Rabei, şi am pus stăpînire pe cetatea apelor;

²⁷Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters.

²⁸strînge acum cealaltă parte a poporului, tăbărăşte împotriva cetăţii, şi ia -o, ca să n'o iau eu şi să vină asupra mea cinstea.``

²⁸Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.”

²⁹David a strîns tot poporul, şi a mers asupra cetăţii Raba; a bătut -o şi a luat -o.

²⁹David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

³⁰A luat cununa de pe capul împăratului ei, care cîntărea un talant de aur şi era împodobită cu pietre scumpe. Au pus -o pe capul lui David, care a luat o foarte mare pradă din cetate.

³⁰He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought out the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

³¹A scos pe locuitori, şi i -a trecut prin ferestraie, prin grape de fer şi securi de fer, şi i -a pus în cuptoarele de cărămizi; aşa a făcut tuturor cetăţilor fiilor lui Amon. David s'a întors la Ierusalim cu tot poporul.

³¹He brought out the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
