¹David numbered the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

²A pus o treime din popor supt porunca lui Ioab, o treime supt Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei, fratele lui Ioab, şi o treime subt Itai din Gat. Şi împăratul a zis poporului: ,,Vreau să ies şi eu împreună cu voi.``

²David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will surely go forth with you myself also.”

³Dar poporul a zis: ,,Să nu ieşi! Căci dacă vom lua -o la fugă, luarea aminte nu se va îndrepta asupra noastră; şi cînd vor cădea jumătate din noi, nu vor lua seama la noi; dar tu eşti ca zece mii dintre noi, şi acum este mai bine să ne vii în ajutor din cetate.``

³But the people said, “You shall not go forth; for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore now it is better that you are ready to help us out of the city.”

⁴Împăratul le -a răspuns: ,,Voi face ce credeţi că este mai bine.`` Şi împăratul a stat lîngă poartă, în timp ce tot poporul ieşea cu sutele şi miile.

⁴The king said to them, “I will do what seems best to you.” The king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

⁵Împăratul a dat următoarea poruncă lui Ioab, lui Abişai şi lui Itai: ,,Pentru dragostea pe care o aveţi faţă de mine, purtaţi-vă blînd cu tînărul Absalom!`` Şi tot poporul a auzit porunca împăratului, dată tuturor căpeteniilor cu privire la Absalom.

⁵The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.” All the people heard when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.

⁶Poporul a ieşit în cîmp înaintea lui Israel, şi bătălia a avut loc în pădurea lui Efraim.

⁶So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.

⁷Acolo, poporul lui Israel a fost bătut de slujitorii lui David, şi a fost o mare înfrîngere în ziua aceea, ca douăzeci de mii de oameni.

⁷The people of Israel were struck there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

⁸Lupta s'a întins pe tot ţinutul, şi pădurea a mîncat mai mult popor în ziua aceea decît a mîncat sabia.

⁸For the battle was there spread over the surface of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

⁹Absalom s'a pomenit în faţa oamenilor lui David. Era călare pe un catîr. Catîrul a pătruns subt ramurile încîlcite ale unui mare stejar, şi capul lui Absalom s'a prins de stejar; a rămas astfel spînzurat între cer şi pămînt, şi catîrul care era subt el a trecut înainte.

⁹Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the sky and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

¹⁰Un om, văzînd lucrul acesta, a venit şi a spus lui Ioab: ,,Iată, am văzut pe Absalom spînzurat de un stejar.``

¹⁰A certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”

¹¹Şi Ioab a zis omului care i -a adus ştirea aceasta: ,,L-ai văzut! De ce dar nu l-ai tăiat pe loc? Ţi-aş fi dat zece sicli de argint şi un brîu.``

¹¹Joab said to the man who told him, “Behold, you saw it, and why didn’t you strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten pieces of silver, and a sash.”

¹²Dar omul acela a zis lui Ioab: ,,Chiar dacă aş cîntări în mîna mea o mie de sicli de argint, n'aş pune mîna pe fiul împăratului; căci noi am auzit următoarea poruncă pe care ţi -a dat -o împăratul ţie, lui Abişai şi lui Itai: ,Luaţi seama fiecare la tînărul Absalom!`

¹²The man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn’t put forth my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.’

¹³Şi dacă l-aşi fi omorît mişeleşte, nimic n'ar fi rămas ascuns împăratului, şi tu însuţi ai fi fost împotriva mea.``

¹³Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me.”

¹⁴Ioab a zis: ,,Nu voi zăbovi atîta cu tine!`` Şi a luat trei săgeţi în mînă, şi le -a înfipt în inima lui Absalom, care era încă plin de viaţă în mijlocul stejarului.

¹⁴Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.” He took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

¹⁵Zece tineri, cari duceau armele lui Ioab, au înconjurat pe Absalom, l-au lovit şi l-au omorît.

¹⁵Ten young men who bore Joab’s armor surrounded and struck Absalom, and killed him.

¹⁶Ioab a sunat din trîmbiţă; şi poporul s'a întors, încetînd astfel să mai urmărească pe Israel, oprit de Ioab.

¹⁶Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.

¹⁷Au luat pe Absalom, l-au aruncat într'o groapă mare din mijlocul pădurii, şi au pus peste el o grămadă foarte mare de petre. Tot Israelul a fugit, fiecare în cortul lui.

¹⁷They took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled everyone to his tent.

¹⁸Pe cînd trăia, Absalom îşi ridicase un stîlp de aducere aminte în valea împăratului. Căci zicea: ,,N'am fii, prin cari să se poată păstra aducerea aminte a numelui meu.`` Şi a pus numele său stîlpului, care şi astăzi se numeşte stîlpul lui Absalom.

¹⁸Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king’s dale; for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in memory.” He called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom’s monument, to this day.

¹⁹Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadoc, a zis: ,,Lasă-mă, să dau fuga, şi să duc împăratului vestea cea bună că Domnul i -a făcut dreptate, scăpîndu -l din mîna vrăjmaşilor săi.``

¹⁹Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me now run, and bear the king news, how that Yahweh has avenged him of his enemies.”

²⁰Ioab i -a zis: ,,Nu tu ai să duci veştile azi; le vei duce într'o altă zi, dar nu astăzi; fiindcă fiul împăratului a murit.``

²⁰Joab said to him, “You shall not be the bearer of news this day, but you shall bear news another day. But today you shall bear no news, because the king’s son is dead.”

²¹Şi Ioab a zis lui Cuşi: ,,Du-te şi vesteşte împăratului ce ai văzut.`` Cuşi s'a închinat înaintea lui Ioab, şi a dat fuga.

²¹Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen!” The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.

²²Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadoc, a zis iarăş lui Ioab: ,,Orice s'ar întîmpla, lasă-mă să alerg după Cuşi.`` Şi Ioab a zis: ,,Pentruce vrei să alergi, fiule? Nu este o solie care-ţi va fi de folos.``

²²Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, “But come what may, please let me also run after the Cushite.” Joab said, “Why do you want to run, my son, since that you will have no reward for the news?”

²³,,Orice s'ar întîmpla, vreau să alerg``, a zis din nou Ahimaaţ. Şi Ioab i -a zis: ,,Dă fuga!`` Ahimaaţ a alergat pe drumul care duce în cîmpie, şi a luat -o înaintea lui Cuşi.

²³“But come what may,” he said, “I will run.” He said to him, “Run!” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.

²⁴David şedea între cele două porţi. Caraula s'a dus pe acoperişul porţii spre zid; a ridicat ochii şi s'a uitat. Şi iată că un om alerga singur singurel.

²⁴Now David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.

²⁵Caraula a strigat, şi a dat de ştire împăratului. Împăratul a zis: ,,Dacă este singur, aduce veşti.`` Şi omul acela se apropia din ce în ce mai mult.

²⁵The watchman cried, and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” He came closer and closer.

²⁶Caraula a văzut un alt om alergînd; a strigat la portar: ,,Iată un om aleargă singur singurel.`` Împăratul a zis: ,,Şi el aduce veşti.``

²⁶The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the porter, and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”

²⁷Caraula a zis: ,,Alergătura celui dintîi pare că e a lui Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadoc.`` Şi împăratul a zis: ,,Este un om de bine, şi aduce veşti bune.``

²⁷The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”

²⁸Ahimaaţ a strigat, şi a zis împăratului: ,,Este bine de tot!`` S'a închinat înaintea împăratului cu faţa pînă la pămînt, şi a zis: ,,Binecuvîntat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, care a dat în mînile noastre pe cei ce ridicau mîna împotriva domnului nostru împăratul.``

²⁸Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is Yahweh your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”

²⁹Împăratul a zis: ,,Tînărul Absalom este bine, sănătos?`` Ahimaaţ a răspuns: ,,Am văzut o mare învălmăşală, cînd a trimes Ioab pe slujitorul împăratului şi pe mine, slujitorul tău: dar nu ştiu ce era.``

²⁹The king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I don’t know what it was.”

³⁰Şi împăratul a zis: ,,Stai colea la o parte.`` Şi Ahimaaţ a stătut deoparte.

³⁰The king said, “Turn aside, and stand here.” He turned aside, and stood still.

³¹Îndată a sosit Cuşi. Şi a zis: ,,Să afle domnul meu, împăratul, vestea cea bună! Astăzi Domnul ţi -a făcut dreptate, scăpîndu-te din mîna tuturor celor ce se ridicau împotriva ta.``

³¹Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “News for my lord the king; for Yahweh has avenged you this day of all those who rose up against you.”

³²Împăratul a zis lui Cuşi: ,,Tînărul Absalom este bine, sănătos?`` Cuşi a răspuns: ,,Ca tînărul acesta să fie vrăjmaşii domnului meu, împăratul, şi toţi cei ce se ridică împotriva ta, ca să-ţi facă rău!``

³²The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” The Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”

³³Atunci împăratul, cutremurîndu-se, s'a suit în odaia de sus a porţii, şi a plîns. Pe cînd mergea, zicea: ,,Fiul meu Absalom! Fiul meu, fiul meu Absalom! Cum n'am murit eu în locul tău! Absalom, fiul meu, fiul meu!``

³³The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son!”
