¹Pe cînd era Apolo în Corint, Pavel, dupăce a trecut prin ţinuturile de sus ale Asiei, a ajuns la Efes. Aici a întîlnit pe cîţiva ucenici,

¹It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.

²şi le -a zis: ,,Aţi primit voi Duhul Sfînt cînd aţi crezut?`` Ei i-au răspuns: ,,Nici n'am auzit măcar că a fost dat un Duh Sfînt.``

²He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

³Dar cu ce botez aţi fost botezaţi?`` le -a zis el. Şi ei au răspuns: ,,Cu botezul lui Ioan.``

³He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

⁴Atunci Pavel a zis: ,,Ioan a botezat cu botezul pocăinţei, şi spunea norodului să creadă în Celce venea după el, adică în Isus.``

⁴Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

⁵Cînd au auzit ei aceste vorbe, au fost botezaţi în Numele Domnului Isus.

⁵When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

⁶Cînd şi -a pus Pavel mînile peste ei, Duhul Sfînt S'a pogorît peste ei, şi vorbeau în alte limbi, şi prooroceau.

⁶When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.

⁷Erau cam doisprezece bărbaţi de toţi.

⁷They were about twelve men in all.

⁸În urmă, Pavel a intrat în sinagogă, unde vorbea cu îndrăzneală. Timp de trei luni a vorbit cu ei despre lucrurile privitoare la Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, şi căuta să înduplece pe cei ce -l ascultau.

⁸He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the Kingdom of God.

⁹Dar, fiindcă unii rămîneau împietriţi şi necredincioşi, şi vorbeau de rău Calea Domnului înaintea norodului, Pavel a plecat dela ei, a despărţit pe ucenici de ei, şi a învăţat în fiecare zi pe norod în şcoala unuia numit Tiran.

⁹But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

¹⁰Lucrul acesta a ţinut doi ani, aşa că toţi ceice locuiau în Asia, Iudei şi Greci, au auzit Cuvîntul Domnului.

¹⁰This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

¹¹Şi Dumnezeu făcea minuni nemaipomenite prin mînile lui Pavel;

¹¹God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,

¹²pînă acolo că peste cei bolnavi se puneau basmale sau şorţuri, cari fuseseră atinse de trupul lui, şi -i lăsau boalele, şi ieşeau afară din ei duhurile rele.

¹²so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.

¹³Nişte exorcişti Iudei, cari umblau din loc în loc, au încercat să cheme Numele Domnului Isus peste ceice aveau duhuri rele, zicînd: ,,Vă jur pe Isus, pe care -L propovăduieşte Pavel, să ieşiţi afară!``

¹³But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

¹⁴Ceice făceau lucrul acesta, erau şapte feciori ai lui Sceva, un preot Iudeu din cei mai de seamă.

¹⁴There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.

¹⁵Duhul cel rău le -a răspuns: ,,Pe Isus Îl cunosc, şi pe Pavel îl ştiu; dar voi, cine sînteţi?``

¹⁵The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”

¹⁶Şi omul, în care era duhul cel rău, a sărit asupra lor, i -a biruit pe amîndoi, şi i -a schingiuit în aşa fel, că au fugit goi şi răniţi din casa aceea.

¹⁶The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

¹⁷Lucrul acesta a fost cunoscut de toţi Iudeii, de toţi Grecii cari locuiau în Efes, şi i -a apucat frica pe toţi: şi Numele Domnului Isus era proslăvit.

¹⁷This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

¹⁸Mulţi din cei ce crezuseră, veneau să mărturisească şi să spună ce făcuseră.

¹⁸Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

¹⁹Şi unii din cei ce făcuseră vrăjitorii, şi-au adus cărţile, şi le-au ars, înaintea tuturor: preţul lor s'a socotit la cincizeci de mii de arginţi.

¹⁹Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. The 50,000 pieces of silver here probably referred to 50,000 drachmas. If so, the value of the burned books was equivalent to about 160 man-years of wages for agricultural laborers

²⁰Cu atîta putere se răspîndea şi se întărea Cuvîntul Domnului.

²⁰So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.

²¹Dupăce s'au petrecut aceste lucruri, Pavel şi -a pus de gînd să se ducă la Ierusalim, trecînd prin Macedonia şi Ahaia. ,,Dupăce voi merge acolo``, îşi zicea el, ,,trebuie să văd şi Roma.``

²¹Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”

²²A trimes în Macedonia pe doi din ajutoarele lui, pe Timotei şi Erast, iar el a mai rămas cîtăva vreme în Asia.

²²Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

²³Pe vremea aceea, s'a făcut o mare turburare cu privire la Calea Domnului.

²³About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

²⁴Un argintar, numit Dimitrie, făcea temple de argint de ale Dianei, şi aducea lucrătorilor săi nu puţin cîştig cu ele.

²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,

²⁵I -a adunat la un loc, împreună cu cei de aceeaş meserie, şi le -a zis: ,,Oamenilor, ştiţi că bogăţia noastră atîrnă de meseria aceasta;

²⁵whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.

²⁶şi vedeţi şi auziţi că Pavel acesta, nu numai în Efes, dar aproape în toată Asia, a înduplecat şi a abătut mult norod, şi zice că zeii făcuţi de mîni nu sînt dumnezei.

²⁶You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.

²⁷Primejdia, care vine din acest fapt, nu este numai că meseria noastră cade în dispreţ; dar şi că templul marei zeiţe Diana este socotit ca o nimica, şi chiar măreţia aceleia, care este cinstită în toată Asia şi în toată lumea, este nimicită.``

²⁷Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

²⁸Cuvintele acestea i-au umplut de mînie, şi au început să strige: ,,Mare este Diana Efesenilor!``

²⁸When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

²⁹Toată cetatea s'a tulburat. Au năvălit cu toţii într-un gînd în teatru, şi au luat cu ei pe Macedonenii Gaiu şi Aristarh, tovarăşii de călătorie ai lui Pavel.

²⁹The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.

³⁰Pavel voia să vină înaintea norodului, dar nu l-au lăsat ucenicii.

³⁰When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.

³¹Chiar şi unii din mai marii Asiei, cari -i erau prieteni, au trimes la el să -l roage să nu se ducă la teatru.

³¹Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.

³²Unii strigau una, alţii alta, căci adunarea era în învălmăşală, şi cei mai mulţi nici nu ştiau pentruce se adunaseră.

³²Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.

³³Atunci au scos din norod pe Alexandru, pe care Iudeii îl împingeau înainte. Alexandru a făcut semn cu mîna, şi voia să se apere înaintea norodului.

³³They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.

³⁴Dar cînd l-au cunoscut că este Iudeu, au strigat toţi într'un glas, timp de aproape două ceasuri: ,,Mare este Diana Efesenilor!``

³⁴But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

³⁵Totuş logofătul a potolit norodul, şi a zis: ,,Bărbaţi Efeseni, cine este acela care nu ştie că cetatea Efesenilor este păzitoarea templului marei Diane şi a chipului ei căzut din cer?

³⁵When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

³⁶Fiindcă nimeni nu poate să tăgăduiască lucrul acesta, trebuie să vă potoliţi, şi să nu faceţi nimic cu pornire nechibzuită.

³⁶Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

³⁷Căci aţi adus aici pe oamenii aceştia, cari nu sînt vinovaţi nici de jăfuirea templului, nici de hulă împotriva zeiţei noastre.

³⁷For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.

³⁸Deci, dacă în adevăr, Dimitrie şi meşterii lui au să se plîngă împotriva cuiva, sînt zile de judecată, şi sînt dregători; să se pîrască unii pe alţii.

³⁸If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.

³⁹Dar dacă umblaţi după altceva, se va hotărî într'o adunare legiuită.

³⁹But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

⁴⁰Noi, de fapt, sîntem în primejdie să fim învinuiţi de răscoală pentru cele întîmplate astăzi, căci n'avem nici un temei, ca să putem îndreptăţi zarva aceasta.``

⁴⁰For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”

⁴¹După aceste cuvinte, a dat drumul adunării.

⁴¹When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
