²Barbarii ne-au arătat o bunăvoinţă puţin obicinuită; ne-au primit pe toţi la un foc mare, pe care -l aprinseseră din pricină că ploua, şi se lăsase un frig mare.

²The natives showed us uncommon kindness; for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

³Pavel strînsese o grămadă de mărăcini, şi -i pusese pe foc; o năpîrcă a ieşit afară din pricina căldurii, şi s'a lipit de mîna lui.

³But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

⁴Barbarii, cînd au văzut năpîrca spînzurată de mîna lui, au zis unii către alţii: ,,Cu adevărat omul acesta este un ucigaş, căci ,Dreptatea` nu vrea să -l lase să trăiască, măcar că a fost scăpat din mare.``

⁴When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped from the sea, yet Justice has not allowed to live.”

⁵Pavel a scuturat năpîrca în foc, şi n'a simţit niciun rău.

⁵However he shook off the creature into the fire, and wasn’t harmed.

⁶Oamenii aceia se aşteptau să -l vadă umflîndu-se sau căzînd deodată mort; dar, dupăce au aşteptat mult, şi au văzut că nu i se întîmplă niciun rău, şi-au schimbat părerea, şi ziceau că este un zeu.

⁶But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly, but when they watched for a long time and saw nothing bad happen to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

⁷În împrejurimi erau moşiile mai marelui ostrovului, numit Publius. El ne -a primit şi ne -a ospătat cu cea mai mare bunăvoinţă trei zile.

⁷Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us, and courteously entertained us for three days.

⁸Tatăl lui Publius zăcea atunci în pat, bolnav de friguri şi de urdinare. Pavel s'a dus la el, s'a rugat, a pus mînile peste el, şi l -a vindecat.

⁸It happened that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him, prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.

⁹Atunci au venit şi ceilalţi bolnavi din ostrovul acela, şi au fost vindecaţi.

⁹Then when this was done, the rest also who had diseases in the island came, and were cured.

¹⁰Ni s'a dat mare cinste; şi, la plecarea noastră cu corabia, ne-au dat tot ce ne trebuia pentru drum.``

¹⁰They also honored us with many honors, and when we sailed, they put on board the things that we needed.

¹¹După o şedere de trei luni, am pornit cu o corabie din Alexandria, care iernase în ostrov şi care purta semnul Dioscurilor.

¹¹After three months, we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was “The Twin Brothers.”

¹²Am ajuns la Siracusa, şi am rămas acolo trei zile.

¹²Touching at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.

¹³De acolo, am mers înainte pe lîngă coastă, şi am venit la Regio; iar a doua zi, fiindcă sufla vîntul de miazăzi, după două zile, am venit la Puzole,

¹³From there we circled around and arrived at Rhegium. After one day, a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,

¹⁴unde am dat peste nişte fraţi, cari ne-au rugat să mai rămînem şapte zile cu ei. Şi aşa am ajuns la Roma.

¹⁴where we found brothers, The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.

¹⁵Din Roma ne-au ieşit înainte, pînă în ,,Forul lui Apiu``, şi pînă la ,,Cele trei Cîrciumi``, fraţii, cari auziseră despre noi. Cînd i -a văzut Pavel, a mulţămit lui Dumnezeu, şi s'a îmbărbătat.

¹⁵From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁶Cînd am ajuns la Roma, sutaşul a dat pe cei întemniţaţi căpitanului străjerilor palatului, iar lui Pavel i s'a îngăduit să rămînă într'un loc deosebit cu un ostaş care -l păzea.

¹⁶When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.

¹⁷După trei zile, Pavel a chemat pe mai marii Iudeilor; şi, cînd s'au adunat, le -a zis: ,,Fraţilor, fără să fi făcut ceva împotriva norodului sau obiceiurilor părinţilor noştri, am fost băgat la închisoare în Ierusalim, şi de acolo am fost dat în mînile Romanilor.

¹⁷It happened that after three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

¹⁸Dupăce m'au supus la cercetare, ei aveau de gînd să-mi dea drumul, pentrucă nu era în mine nici o vină vrednică de moarte.

¹⁸who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁹Dar Iudeii s'au împotrivit, şi am fost silit să cer să fiu judecat de Cezar, fără să am dealtfel niciun gînd să pîrăsc neamul meu.

¹⁹But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.

²⁰De aceea, v'am chemat să vă văd, şi să vorbesc cu voi; căci din pricina nădejdii lui Israel port eu acest lanţ.``

²⁰For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”

²¹Ei i-au răspuns: ,,Noi n'am primit din Iudea nici o scrisoare cu privire la tine, şi n'a venit aici nici un frate, care să fi spus sau să fi vorbit ceva rău despre tine.

²¹They said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor did any of the brothers come here and report or speak any evil of you.

²²Dar am vrea să auzim părerea ta, pentrucă ştim că partida aceasta pretutindeni stîrneşte împotrivire.``

²²But we desire to hear from you what you think. For, as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”

²³I-au hotărît o zi, şi au venit mai mulţi la locuinţa lui. Pavel le -a vestit Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, le -a adus dovezi, şi a căutat să -i încredinţeze, prin Legea lui Moise şi prin Prooroci, despre lucrurile privitoare la Isus. Vorbirea ţinea de dimineaţă pînă seara.

²³When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about the Kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.

²⁴Unii au crezut ce le spunea el, iar alţii n'au crezut.

²⁴Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.

²⁵Fiindcă ei au plecat acasă în neînţelegere unii cu alţii, Pavel n'a adăugat decît aceste vorbe: ,,Bine a spus Duhul Sfînt prin proorocul Isaia către părinţii voştri,

²⁵When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one word, “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah, the prophet, to our fathers,

²⁶cînd a zis: ,Du-te la poporul acesta, şi zi -i: ,,Veţi auzi cu urechile voastre, şi nu veţi înţelege; cu ochii voştri veţi privi, şi nu veţi vedea.

²⁶saying, ‘Go to this people, and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.

²⁷Căci inima acestui norod s'a împietrit; ei aud greu cu urechile, şi-au închis ochii, ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii, să audă cu urechile, să înţeleagă cu inima, să se întoarcă la Dumnezeu, şi să -i vindec.``

²⁷For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, and I would heal them.’ Isaiah 6:9-10

²⁸Să ştiţi dar că mîntuirea aceasta a lui Dumnezeu a fost trimeasă Neamurilor, şi o vor asculta.``

²⁸“Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the nations. They will also listen.”

²⁹Cînd a zis aceste vorbe, Iudeii au plecat, vorbind cu aprindere între ei.

²⁹When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.

³⁰Pavel a rămas doi ani întregi într'o casă, pe care o luase cu chirie. Primea pe toţi cari veneau să -l vadă,

³⁰Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who were coming to him,

³¹propovăduia Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, şi învăţa pe oameni, cu toată îndrăzneala şi fără nicio pedică, cele privitoare la Domnul Isus Hristos

³¹preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
