¹He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

²Să pui şi paharul meu, paharul de argint, la gura sacului celui mai tînăr, împreună cu argintul cuvenit pentru preţul grîului lui``. Economul a făcut cum îi poruncise Iosif.

⁴When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good?

⁵De ce aţi furat paharul din care bea domnul meu, şi de care se slujeşte pentru ghicit? Rău aţi făcut că v'aţi purtat astfel.``

⁵Isn’t this that from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.’”

⁶Economul i -a ajuns, şi le -a spus aceste cuvinte.

⁶He overtook them, and he spoke these words to them.

⁷They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing!

⁸Iată, noi ţi-am adus din ţara Canaanului argintul, pe care l-am găsit la gura sacilor noştri; cum am fi putut să furăm argint sau aur din casa domnului tău?

⁸Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan. How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord’s house?

⁹Să moară acela dintre robii tăi la care se va găsi paharul, şi noi înşine să fim robi ai domnului nostru!``

⁹With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondservants.”

¹⁰El a zis: ,,Fie după cuvintele voastre! Acela la care se va găsi paharul, să fie robul meu; iar voi veţi fi nevinovaţi.``

¹⁰He said, “Now also let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found will be my bondservant; and you will be blameless.”

¹¹Îndată, şi -a pogorît fiecare sacul la pămînt. Fiecare şi -a deschis sacul.

¹¹Then they hurried, and each man took his sack down to the ground, and each man opened his sack.

¹²Economul i -a scotocit, începînd cu cel mai în vîrstă şi sfîrşind cu cel mai tînăr; şi paharul a fost găsit în sacul lui Beniamin.

¹²He searched, beginning with the eldest, and ending at the youngest. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

¹³Ei şi-au rupt hainele, şi -a încărcat fiecare măgarul, şi s'au întors în cetate.

¹³Then they tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey, and returned to the city.

¹⁴Iuda şi fraţii lui au ajuns la casa lui Iosif, pe cînd era el încă acolo, şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt înaintea lui.

¹⁴Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, and he was still there. They fell on the ground before him.

¹⁵Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?”

¹⁶Iuda a răspuns: ,,Ce să mai spunem domnului nostru? Cum să mai vorbim? Cum să ne mai îndreptăţim?`` Dumnezeu a dat pe faţă nelegiuirea robilor tăi. Iată-ne robi ai domnului nostru: noi, şi acela la care s'a găsit paharul.``

¹⁶Judah said, “What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? Or how will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord’s bondservants, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.”

¹⁷Dar Iosif a zis: ,,Să mă ferească Dumnezeu să fac aşa ceva! Omul la care s'a găsit paharul, va fi robul meu; dar voi, suiţi-vă înapoi în pace la tatăl vostru.``

¹⁷He said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my bondservant; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”

¹⁸Atunci Iuda s'a apropiat de Iosif, şi a zis: ,,Te rog, domnul meu, dă voie robului tău să spună o vorbă domnului meu, şi să nu te mînii pe robul tău! Căci tu eşti ca Faraon.

¹⁸Then Judah came near to him, and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and don’t let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.

¹⁹Domnul meu a întrebat pe robii săi, zicînd: ,,Mai trăeşte tatăl vostru, şi mai aveţi vreun frate?``

¹⁹My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’

²⁰Noi am răspuns domnului meu: ,,Avem un tată bătrîn, şi un frate tînăr, copil făcut la bătrîneţa lui; băiatul acesta avea un frate care a murit, şi care era dela aceeaş mamă; el a rămas singur, şi tatăl lui îl iubeşte.``

²⁰We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.’

²¹Tu ai spus robilor tăi: ,,Aduceţi -l la mine ca să -l văd cu ochii mei.``

²¹You said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’

²²Noi am răspuns domnului meu: ,,Băiatul nu poate părăsi pe tatăl său; dacă -l va părăsi, tatăl său are să moară.``

²²We said to my lord, ‘The boy can’t leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’

²³Tu ai spus robilor tăi: ,,Dacă nu se va pogorî şi fratele vostru împreună cu voi, să nu-mi mai vedeţi faţa.``

²³You said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will see my face no more.’

²⁴Cînd ne-am suit la tatăl meu, robul tău, i-am spus cuvintele domnului meu.

²⁴It happened when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

²⁵Tatăl nostru a zis: ,,Duceţi-vă iarăş să ne cumpăraţi ceva merinde.``

²⁵Our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food.’

²⁶Noi am răspuns: ,,Nu putem să ne ducem; dar dacă fratele nostru cel tînăr va fi cu noi, ne vom duce; căci nu putem vedea faţa omului aceluia, de cît dacă fratele nostru cel tînăr va fi cu noi.``

²⁶We said, ‘We can’t go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down: for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.’

²⁷Robul tău, tatăl nostru, ne -a zis: ,,Voi ştiţi că nevastă-mea mi -a născut doi fii.

²⁷Your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons:

²⁸Unul a ieşit dela mine, şi cred că a fost sfîşiat negreşit de fiare, căci nu l-am mai văzut pînă astăzi.

²⁸and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces”; and I haven’t seen him since.

²⁹Dacă-mi mai luaţi şi pe acesta, şi i se va întîmpla vreo nenorocire, cu durere îmi veţi pogorî bătrîneţele în locuinţa morţilor.``

²⁹If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. .’

³⁰Acum, dacă mă voi întoarce la robul tău, tatăl meu, fără să avem cu noi băiatul de sufletul căruia este nedeslipit sufletul lui,

³⁴For how will I go up to my father, if the boy isn’t with me?—lest I see the evil that will come on my father.”
