¹Fraţii mei, să nu fiţi mulţi învăţători, căci ştiţi că vom primi o judecată mai aspră.

¹Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

²Toţi greşim în multe feluri. Dacă nu greşeşte cineva în vorbire, este un om desăvîrşit, şi poate să-şi ţină în frîu tot trupul.

²For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

³De pildă, dacă punem cailor frîul în gură, ca să ne asculte, le cîrmuim tot trupul.

³Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

⁴Iată, şi corăbiile, cît de mari sînt, şi, măcar că sînt mînate de vînturi iuţi, totuş sînt cîrmuite de o cîrmă foarte mică, după gustul cîrmaciului.

⁴Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

⁵Tot aşa şi limba, este un mic mădular, şi se făleşte cu lucruri mari. Iată, un foc mic ce pădure mare aprinde!

⁵So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

⁶Limba este şi ea un foc, este o lume de nelegiuiri. Ea este aceea dintre mădularele noastre, care întinează tot trupul şi aprinde roata vieţii, cînd este aprinsă de focul gheenei.

⁶And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. or, Hell

⁷Toate soiurile de fiare, de păsări, de tîrîtoare, de vieţuitoare de mare se îmblînzesc, şi au fost îmblînzite de neamul omenesc,

⁷For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

⁸dar limba niciun om n'o poate îmblînzi. Ea este un rău, care nu se poate înfrîna, este plină de o otravă de moarte.

⁸But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

⁹Cu ea binecuvîntăm pe Domnul, şi Tatăl nostru, şi tot cu ea blestemăm pe oameni cari sînt făcuţi după asemănarea lui Dumnezeu.

⁹With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

¹⁰Din aceeaş gură iese şi binecuvîntarea şi blestemul! Nu trebuie să fie aşa, fraţii mei!

¹⁰Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

¹¹Oare din aceeaş vînă a izvorului ţîşneşte şi apă dulce şi apă amară?

¹¹Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?

¹²Fraţii mei, poate oare un smochin să facă măsline, sau o viţă să facă smochine? Nici apa sărată nu poate da apă dulce.

¹²Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

¹³Cine dintre voi este înţelept şi priceput? Să-şi arate, prin purtarea lui bună, faptele făcute cu blîndeţa înţelepciunii!

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

¹⁴Dar dacă aveţi în inima voastră pizmă amară şi un duh de ceartă, să nu vă lăudaţi şi să nu minţiţi împotriva adevărului.

¹⁴But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.

¹⁵Înţelepciunea aceasta nu vine de sus, ci este pămîntească, firească (Greceşte: sufletească.), drăcească.

¹⁵This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

¹⁶Căci acolo unde este pizmă şi duh de ceartă, este tulburare şi tot felul de fapte rele.

¹⁶For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

¹⁷Înţelepciunea care vine de sus, este, întîi, curată, apoi pacinică, blîndă, uşor de înduplecat, plină de îndurare şi de roduri bune, fără părtinire, nefăţarnică.

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁸Şi roada neprihănirii este sămănată în pace pentru cei ce fac pace.

¹⁸Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
