¹Era în ţara Uţ un om care se numea Iov. Şi omul acesta era fără prihană şi curat la suflet. El se temea de Dumnezeu, şi se abătea de la rău.

¹There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” , and turned away from evil.

²I s'au născut şapte fii şi trei fete.

²There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³Avea şapte mii de oi, trei mii de cămile, cinci sute de perechi de boi, cinci sute de măgăriţe, şi un foarte mare număr de slujitori. Şi omul acesta era cel mai cu vază din toţi locuitorii Răsăritului.

³His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

⁴Fiii săi se duceau unii la alţii, şi dădeau, rînd pe rînd, cîte un ospăţ. Şi pofteau şi pe cele trei surori ale lor să mănînce şi să bea împreună cu ei.

⁴His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵Şi, dupăce treceau zilele de ospăţ, Iov chema şi sfinţea pe fiii săi: se scula disdedimineaţă şi aducea pentru fiecare din ei cîte o ardere de tot. Căci zicea Iov: ,,Poate că fiii mei au păcătuit şi au supărat pe Dumnezeu în inima lor.`` Aşa avea Iov obicei să facă.

⁵It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

⁶Fiii lui Dumnezeu au venit într'o zi de s'au înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. Şi a venit şi Satana în mijlocul lor.

⁶Now it happened on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. that Satan also came among them.

⁷Domnul a zis Satanei: ,,De unde vii?`` Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: ,,Dela cutreerarea pămîntului şi dela plimbarea pe care am făcut -o pe el.``

⁷Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

⁸Domnul a zis Satanei: ,,Ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu este nimeni ca el pe pămînt. Este un om fără prihană şi curat la suflet, care se teme de Dumnezeu şi se abate dela rău.``

⁸Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

⁹Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: ,,Oare degeaba se teme Iov de Dumnezeu?

⁹Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

¹⁰Nu l-ai ocrotit Tu pe el, casa lui şi tot ce este al lui? Ai binecuvîntat lucrul mînilor lui, şi turmele lui acopăr ţara.

¹⁰Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

¹¹Dar ia întinde-Ţi mîna, şi atinge-te de tot ce are, şi sînt încredinţat că Te va blestema în faţă.``

¹¹But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.”

¹²Domnul a zis Satanei: ,,Iată, îţi dau pe mînă tot ce are, numai asupra lui să nu întinzi mîna.`` Şi Satana a plecat dinaintea Domnului.

¹²Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t put forth your hand.” So Satan went forth from the presence of Yahweh.

¹³Într'o zi, pe cînd fiii şi fiicele lui Iov mîncau şi beau vin în casa fratelui lor celui întîi-născut,

¹³It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,

¹⁴a venit la Iov un sol, care a zis: ,,Boii arau şi măgăriţele păşteau lîngă ei.

¹⁴that there came a messenger to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,

¹⁵Şi s'au aruncat nişte Sabeeni asupra lor, i-au luat, şi au trecut pe slujitori prin ascuţişul săbiei. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.``

¹⁵and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

¹⁶Pe cînd vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: ,,Focul lui Dumnezeu a căzut din cer, şi a aprins oile şi pe slujitorii tăi, şi i -a ars de tot. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.``

¹⁶While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

¹⁷Pe cînd vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: ,,Nişte Haldeeni, înşiraţi în trei cete, s'au aruncat asupra cămilelor, le-au luat şi au trecut pe slujitori prin ascuţişul săbiei. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.``

¹⁷While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

¹⁸Pe cînd vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: ,,Fiii tăi şi fiicele tale mîncau şi beau vin în casa fratelui lor întîi-născut.

¹⁸While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,

¹⁹Şi deodată, a venit un vînt mare de dincolo de pustie, şi a izbit în cele patru colţuri ale casei: Casa s'a prăbuşit peste tineri, şi au murit. Şi am scăpat numai eu, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.``

¹⁹and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.”

²⁰Atunci Iov s'a sculat, şi -a sfîşiat mantaua, şi şi -a tuns capul. Apoi, aruncîndu-se la pămînt, s'a închinat,

²⁰Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.

²¹şi a zis: ,,Gol am ieşit din pîntecele mamei mele, şi gol mă voi întoarce în sînul pămîntului. Domnul a dat, şi Domnul a luat, -binecuvîntat fie Numele Domnului!``

²¹He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be the name of Yahweh.”

²²În toate acestea, Iov n'a păcătuit de loc, şi n'a vorbit nimic necuviincios împotriva lui Dumnezeu.

²²In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
