¹După ce a rostit aceste vorbe, Isus a plecat cu ucenicii Săi dincolo de pîrîul Chedron, unde era o grădină, în care a intrat El şi ucenicii Lui.

¹When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.

²Iuda, vînzătorul, ştia şi el locul acela, pentrucă Isus de multe ori Se adunase acolo cu ucenicii Lui.

²Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.

³Iuda, deci, a luat ceata ostaşilor şi pe aprozii trimeşi de preoţii cei mai de seamă şi de Farisei, şi a venit acolo cu felinare, cu făclii şi cu arme.

³Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

⁴Isus, care ştia tot ce avea să I se întîmple, a mers spre ei, şi le -a zis: ,,Pe cine căutaţi?``

⁴Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went forth, and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”

⁵Ei I-au răspuns: ,,Pe Isus din Nazaret!``. Isus le -a zis: ,,Eu sînt!``. Iuda, vînzătorul, era şi el cu ei.

⁵They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

⁶Cînd le -a zis Isus: ,,Eu sînt``, ei s'au dat înapoi, şi au căzut jos la pămînt.

⁶When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward, and fell to the ground.

⁷El i -a întrebat din nou: ,,Pe cine căutaţi?`` ,,Pe Isus din Nazaret``, I-au zis ei.

⁷Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

⁸Isus a răspuns: ,,V-am spus că Eu sînt. Deci, dacă Mă căutaţi pe Mine, lăsaţi pe aceştia să se ducă.``

⁸Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”

⁹A zis lucrul acesta ca să se împlinească vorba, pe care o spusese: ,,N-am pierdut pe niciunul din aceia, pe cari Mi i-ai dat.``

⁹that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.” John 6:39

¹⁰Simon Petru, care avea o sabie, a scos -o, a lovit pe robul marelui preot, şi i -a tăiat urechea dreaptă. Robul acela se numea Malhu.

¹⁰Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

¹¹Isus a zis lui Petru: ,,Bagă-ţi sabia în teacă. Nu voi bea paharul, pe care Mi l -a dat Tatăl să -l beau?``

¹¹Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”

¹²Ceata ostaşilor, căpitanul lor, şi aprozii Iudeilor, au prins deci pe Isus, şi L-au legat.

¹²So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,

¹³L-au dus întîi la Ana; căci el era socrul lui Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela.

¹³and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

¹⁴Şi Caiafa era celce dăduse Iudeilor sfatul acesta: ,,Este de folos să moară un singur om pentru norod.``

¹⁴Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.

¹⁵Simon Petru mergea după Isus; tot aşa a făcut şi un alt ucenic. Ucenicul acesta era cunoscut de marele preot, şi a intrat cu Isus în curtea marelui preot.

¹⁵Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;

¹⁶Petru însă a rămas afară la uşă. Celalt ucenic, care era cunoscut marelui preot, a ieşit afară, a vorbit cu portăriţa, şi a băgat pe Petru înlăuntru.

¹⁶but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.

¹⁷Atunci slujnica, portăriţa, a zis lui Petru: ,,Nu cumva şi tu eşti unul din ucenicii omului acestuia?`` ,,Nu sînt``, a răspuns el.

¹⁷Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”

¹⁸Robii şi aprozii cari erau acolo, făcuseră un foc de cărbuni, căci era frig: şi se încălzeau. Petru stătea şi el cu ei, şi se încălzea.

¹⁸Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.

¹⁹Marele preot a întrebat pe Isus despre ucenicii Lui şi despre învăţătura Lui.

¹⁹The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.

²⁰Isus i -a răspuns: ,,Eu am vorbit lumii pe faţă; totdeauna am învăţat pe norod în sinagogă şi în Templu, unde se adună toţi Iudeii, şi n'am spus nimic în ascuns.

²⁰Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.

²¹Pentruce Mă întrebi pe Mine? Întreabă pe ceice M'au auzit despre ce le-am vorbit; iată, aceia ştiu ce am spus.``

²¹ Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said.”

²²La auzul acestor cuvinte, unul din aprozii, cari stăteau acolo, a dat o palmă lui Isus, şi a zis: ,,Aşa răspunzi marelui preot?``

²²When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”

²³Isus i -a răspuns: ,,Dacă am vorbit rău, arată ce am spus rău; dar dacă am vorbit bine, dece mă baţi?``

²³Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”

²⁴Ana L -a trimes legat la marele preot Caiafa.

²⁴Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

²⁵Simon Petru stătea acolo, şi se încălzea. Ei i-au zis: ,,Nu cumva eşti şi tu unul din ucenicii Lui?`` El s'a lepădat, şi a zis: ,,Nu sînt.``

²⁵Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”

²⁶Unul din robii marelui preot, rudă cu acela căruia îi tăiase Petru urechea, a zis: ,,Nu te-am văzut eu cu El în grădină?``

²⁶One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”

²⁷Petru iar s -a lepădat. Şi îndată a cîntat cocoşul.

²⁷Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.

²⁸Au adus pe Isus dela Caiafa în odaia de judecată: era dimineaţa. Ei n'au intrat în odaia de judecată, ca să nu se spurce şi să poată mînca Paştele.

²⁸They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

²⁹Pilat deci a ieşit afară la ei, şi le -a zis: ,,Ce pîră aduceţi împotriva omului acestuia?``

²⁹Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”

³⁰Drept răspuns, ei i-au zis: ,,Dacă n'ar fi fost un făcător de rele, nu L-am fi dat noi în mînile tale.``

³⁰They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”

³¹Atunci Pilat le -a zis: ,,Luaţi -L voi, şi judecaţi -L după legea voastră.`` ,,Nouă nu ne este îngăduit de Lege să omorîm pe nimeni``, I-au zis Iudeii.

³¹Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”

³²Aceasta s'a întîmplat ca să se împlinească vorba, prin care arătase Isus cu ce moarte avea să moară.

³²that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.

³³Pilat a intrat iarăş în odaia de judecată, a chemat pe Isus şi I -a zis: ,,Eşti Tu Împăratul Iudeilor?``

³³Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

³⁴Isus i -a răspuns: ,,Dela tine însuţi zici lucrul acesta, sau ţi l-au spus alţii despre Mine!``

³⁴Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”

³⁵Pilat a răspuns: ,,Eu sînt Iudeu? Neamul Tău şi preoţii cei mai de seamă Te-au dat în mîna mea: ce ai făcut?``

³⁵Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”

³⁶,,Împărăţia Mea nu este din lumea aceasta``, a răspuns Isus. ,,Dacă ar fi Împărăţia Mea din lumea aceasta, slujitorii Mei s'ar fi luptat ca să nu fiu dat în mînile Iudeilor; dar acum, Împărăţia Mea nu este de aici.``

³⁶Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”

³⁷,,Atunci un Împărat tot eşti!`` I -a zis Pilat. ,,Da``, a răspuns Isus. ,,Eu sînt Împărat. Eu pentru aceasta M'am născut şi am venit în lume, ca să mărturisesc despre adevăr. Oricine este din adevăr ascultă glasul Meu.``

³⁷Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

³⁸Pilat I -a zis: ,,Ce este adevărul?``

³⁸Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

³⁹Dar, fiindcă voi aveţi obicei să vă slobozesc pe cineva de Paşte, vreţi să vă slobozesc pe Împăratul Iudeilor?``

³⁹But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

⁴⁰Atunci toţi au strigat din nou: ,,Nu pe El, ci pe Baraba!`` Şi Baraba era un tîlhar.

⁴⁰Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
