¹Iefta, Galaaditul, era un om viteaz. El era fiul unei curve. Galaad născuse pe Iefta.

¹Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

²Nevasta lui Galaad i -a născut fii, cari, făcîndu-se mari, au izgonit pe Iefta, şi i-au zis: ,,Tu nu vei avea moştenire în casa tatălui nostru, căci eşti fiul unei alte femei.``

²Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.”

³Şi Iefta a fugit de la fraţii lui, şi a locuit în ţara Tob. Nişte oameni fără căpătîi s-au strîns la Iefta, şi făceau plimbări cu el.

³Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

⁴După cîtva timp, fiii lui Amon au pornit cu război împotriva lui Israel.

⁴It happened after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

⁵Şi pe cînd fiii lui Amon făceau război cu Israel, bătrînii Galaadului s'au dus să caute pe Iefta din ţara Tob.

⁵It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

⁶Ei au zis lui Iefta: ,,Vino de fii căpetenia noastră, şi să batem pe fiii lui Amon.``

⁶and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

⁷Iefta a răspuns bătrînilor Galaadului: ,,Nu m'aţi urît voi, şi nu m'aţi izgonit voi din casa tatălui meu? Pentruce veniţi la mine acum cînd sînteţi în strîmtorare?``

⁷Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

⁸Bătrînii Galaadului au zis lui Iefta: ,,Ne întoarcem la tine acum, ca să mergi cu noi, să baţi pe fiii lui Amon, şi să fii căpetenia noastră, căpetenia tuturor locuitorilor Galaadului.``

⁸The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

⁹Iefta a răspuns bătrînilor Galaadului: ,,Dacă mă aduceţi înapoi ca să bat pe fiii lui Amon, şi dacă Domnul îi va da înaintea mea, voi fi eu oare căpetenia voastră?``

⁹Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?”

¹⁰Bătrînii Galaadului au zis lui Iefta: ,,Domnul să ne audă, şi să judece, dacă nu vom face ce spui.``

¹⁰The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.”

¹¹Şi Iefta a pornit cu bătrînii Galaadului. Poporul l -a pus în fruntea lui, şi l -a aşezat căpetenie, şi Iefta a spus din nou înaintea Domnului, la Miţpa, toate cuvintele pe cari le rostise.

¹¹Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

¹²Iefta a trimes soli împăratului fiilor lui Amon, ca să -i spună: ,,Ce ai cu mine de vii împotriva mea să faci război împotriva ţării mele?``

¹²Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

¹³Împăratul fiilor lui Amon a răspuns solilor lui Iefta: ,,Pentrucă Israel, cînd s'a suit din Egipt, a pus mîna pe ţara mea, dela Arnon pînă la Iaboc şi Iordan. Dă-mi -o înapoi acum de bună voie.``

¹³The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

¹⁴Iefta a trimes iarăş soli împăratului fiilor lui Amon,

¹⁴Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

¹⁵ca să -i spună: ,,Aşa vorbeşte Iefta. ,Israel n'a pus mîna pe ţara Moabului, nici pe ţara fiilor lui Amon.

¹⁵and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

¹⁶Căci, cînd s'a suit Israel din Egipt, a mers în pustie pînă la marea Roşie şi a ajuns la Cades.

¹⁶but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds , and came to Kadesh;

¹⁷Atunci Israel a trimes soli împăratului Edomului, ca să -i spună: ,Lasă-mă să trec prin ţara ta.` Dar împăratul Edomului n'a voit. A trimes şi la împăratul Moabului, şi nici el n'a vrut. Şi Israel a rămas la Cades.

¹⁷then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁸Apoi a mers prin pustie, a ocolit ţara Edomului şi ţara Moabului, şi a venit la răsăritul ţării Moabului; au tăbărît dincolo de Arnon, fără să intre pe ţinutul Moabului, căci Arnonul era hotarul Moabului.

¹⁸Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁹Israel a trimes soli lui Sihon, împăratul Amoriţilor, împăratul Hesbonului. Şi Israel i -a zis: ,Lasă-mă să trec prin ţara ta pînă la locul spre care mergem.`

¹⁹Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

²⁰Dar Sihon n'a avut încredere în Israel, ca să -l lase să treacă pe ţinutul lui; şi -a strîns tot poporul, a tăbărît la Iahat, şi a luptat împotriva lui Israel.

²⁰But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²¹Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, a dat pe Sihon şi pe tot poporul lui în mînile lui Israel, care i -a bătut. Israel a pus mîna pe toată ţara Amoriţilor, cari erau aşezaţi în ţara aceasta.

²¹Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

²²Au pus mîna pe tot ţinutul Amoriţilor, dela Arnon pînă la Iaboc, şi dela pustie pînă la Iordan.

²²They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

²³Şi acum, cînd Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, a izgonit pe Amoriţi dinaintea poporului Său Israel, tu să le stăpîneşti ţara?

²³So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

²⁴Oare ce-ţi dă în stăpînire dumnezeul tău Chemoş, nu vei stăpîni? Şi tot ce ne -a dat în stăpînire Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, înaintea noastră, noi să nu stăpînim!

²⁴Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

²⁵Eşti tu mai bun decît Balac, fiul lui Ţipor, împăratul Moabului? S'a certat el cu Israel sau a făcut el război împotriva lui?

²⁵Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

²⁶Iată că sînt trei sute de ani de cînd locuieşte Israel la Hesbon şi în satele din jurul lui, la Aroer şi în satele din jurul lui şi în toate cetăţile cari sînt pe malul Arnonului: pentruce nu i le-aţi luat în tot timpul acesta?

²⁶While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time?

²⁷Eu nu te-am supărat deloc, şi rău te-ai purtat cu mine, făcîndu-mi război. Domnul să judece lucrul acesta. El să fie astăzi judecător între fiii lui Israel şi fiii lui Amon.``

²⁷I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

²⁸Împăratul fiilor lui Amon n'a ascultat cuvintele pe cari a trimes Iefta să i le spună.

²⁸However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

²⁹Duhul Domnului a venit peste Iefta. Iefta a străbătut Galaadul şi Manase; a trecut la Miţpe în Galaad; şi din Miţpe din Galaad, a pornit împotriva fiilor lui Amon.

²⁹Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

³⁰Iefta a făcut o juruinţă Domnului, şi a zis: ,,Dacă vei da în mînile mele pe fiii lui Amon,

³⁰Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

³¹ori cine va ieşi pe porţile casei mele înaintea mea, la întoarcerea mea fericită dela fiii lui Amon, va fi închinat Domnului, şi -l voi aduce ca ardere de tot.``

³¹then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

³²Iefta a pornit împotriva fiilor lui Amon, şi Domnul i -a dat în mînile lui.

³²So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

³³Le -a pricinuit o foarte mare înfrîngere, dela Aroer pînă spre Minit, loc care cuprindea douăzeci de cetăţi, şi pînă la Abel-Cheramim. Şi fiii lui Amon au fost smeriţi înaintea copiilor lui Israel.

³³He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

³⁴Iefta s'a întors acasă la Miţpa. Şi iată că fiică-sa i -a ieşit înainte cu timpane şi jocuri. Ea era singurul lui copil; n'avea fii şi nici altă fată.

³⁴Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁵Cum a văzut -o, el şi -a rupt hainele, şi a zis:: ,,Ah! fata mea! adînc mă loveşti şi mă turburi! Am făcut o juruinţă Domnului, şi n'o pot întoarce.``

³⁵It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

³⁶Ea i -a zis: ,,Tată, ai făcut o juruinţă Domnului, fă-mi potrivit cu ceeace ţi -a ieşit din gură, acum cînd Domnul te -a răzbunat pe vrăjmaşii tăi, pe fiii lui Amon.``

³⁶She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

³⁷Şi ea a zis tatălui său: ,,Atît îngăduie-mi: lasă-mă slobodă două luni, ca să mă duc să mă pogor în munţi, şi să-mi plîng fecioria cu tovarăşele mele.``

³⁷She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

³⁸El a răspuns: ,,Du-te!`` Şi a lăsat -o slobodă două luni. Ea s'a dus cu tovarăşele ei, şi şi -a plîns fecioria pe munţi.

³⁸He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

³⁹După cele două luni, s'a întors la tatăl ei, şi el a împlinit cu ea juruinţa pe care o făcuse. Ea nu cunoscuse împreunarea cu bărbat. De atunci s'a făcut în Israel obiceiul

³⁹It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,

⁴⁰că, în toţi anii, fetele lui Israel se duc să prăznuiască pe fiica lui Iefta, Galaaditul, patru zile pe an.

⁴⁰that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
