¹Ierubaal, sau Ghedeon, şi tot poporul care era cu el, s'au sculat disdedimineaţă, şi au tăbărît la izvorul Harod. Tabăra lui Madian era la miazănoapte de Ghedeon, spre dealul More, în vale.

¹Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

²Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: ,,Poporul pe care -l ai cu tine este prea mult, pentru ca să dau pe Madian în mînile lui; el ar putea să se laude împotriva Mea, şi să zică: ,Mîna mea m'a izbăvit`.

²Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

³Vesteşte dar lucrul acesta în auzul poporului: ,Cine este fricos şi se teme, să se întoarcă şi să se depărteze de muntele Gaaladului``. Douăzeci şi două de mii de oameni din popor s'au întors, şi au mai rămas zece mii.

³Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” Twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

⁴Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: ,,Poporul este încă prea mult. Pogoară -i la apă, şi acolo ţi -i voi alege; acela despre care îţi voi spune: ,Acesta să meargă cu tine`, va merge cu tine; şi acela despre care îţi voi spune: ,Acesta să nu meargă cu tine`, nu va merge cu tine``.

⁴Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that of whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

⁵Ghedeon a pogorît poporul la apă, şi Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: ,,Pe toţi cei ce vor limpăi apă cu limba, cum limpăeşte cînele, să -i desparţi de toţi cei ce vor bea apă din genunchi``.

⁵So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”

⁶Ceice au limpăit apa, ducînd -o la gură cu mîna, au fost în număr de trei sute de oameni; şi tot poporul celalt a îngenunchiat ca să bea.

⁶The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water.

⁷Şi Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: ,,Cu cei trei sute de oameni cari au limpăit, vă voi mîntui, şi voi da pe Madian în mînile tale. Toţi ceilalţi din popor să se ducă fiecare acasă.

⁷Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

⁸Au luat merindele poporului şi trîmbiţele lui. Apoi Ghedeon a trimes pe toţi bărbaţii lui Israel, pe fiecare în cortul lui, şi a ţinut pe cei trei sute de oameni. Tabăra lui Madian era jos în vale.

⁸So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

⁹Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon în timpul nopţii: ,,Scoală-te, şi pogoară-te în tabără, căci am dat -o în mînile tale.

⁹It happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand.

¹⁰Dacă ţi -e frică să te pogori, pogoară-te cu Pura, slujitorul tău.

¹⁰But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp:

¹¹Să asculţi ce vor zice, şi după aceea ţi se vor întări mînile: pogoară-te dar în tabără.`` ,,El s'a pogorît cu Pura, slujitorul lui, pînă la întîia strajă a taberii.

¹¹and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp.

¹²Madian, Amalec, şi toţi fiii Răsăritului, erau răspîndiţi în vale, ca o mulţime de lăcuste, şi cămilele lor erau fără număr, ca nisipul de pe marginea mării.

¹²The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude.

¹³Ghedeon a sosit; şi iată că un om istorisea tovarăşului său un vis. El zicea: ,,Am visat un vis: şi se făcea că o turtă de orz se rostogolea în tabăra lui Madian; a venit de s'a lovit pînă la cort, şi cortul a căzut; l -a răsturnat cu susul în jos, şi cortul a fost dărîmat.``

¹³When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow; and he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

¹⁴Tovarăşul lui a răspuns, şi a zis: ,,Aceasta nu este altceva decît sabia lui Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioas, bărbatul lui Israel; Dumnezeu a dat în mînile lui pe Madian şi toată tabăra.``

¹⁴His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

¹⁵Cînd a auzit Ghedeon istorisirea visului şi tîlcuirea lui, s'a aruncat cu faţa la pămînt, s'a întors în tabăra lui Israel, şi a zis: ,,Sculaţi-vă, căci Domnul a dat în mînile voastre tabăra lui Madian.``

¹⁵It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

¹⁶A împărţit în trei cete pe cei trei sute de oameni, şi le -a dat tuturor trîmbiţe şi ulcioare goale, cu nişte făclii în ulcioare.

¹⁶He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

¹⁷El le -a zis: ,,Să vă uitaţi la mine, şi să faceţi ca mine. Cum voi ajunge în tabără, să faceţi ce voi face eu;

¹⁷He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.

¹⁸şi cînd voi suna din trîmbiţă, eu şi toţi ceice vor fi cu mine, să sunaţi şi voi din trîmbiţă de jur împrejurul taberii, şi să ziceţi: ,Sabia Domnului şi a lui Ghedeon!``

¹⁸When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’”

¹⁹Ghedeon şi cei o sută de oameni cari erau cu el au ajuns la capătul taberii la începutul străjii dela mijlocul nopţii, îndată dupăce puseseră pe păzitori. Au sunat din trîmbiţă, şi au spart ulcioarele pe cari le aveau în mînă.

¹⁹So Gideon, and the hundred men who were with him, came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

²⁰Cele trei cete au sunat din trîmbiţă şi au spart ulcioarele; au apucat făcliile cu mîna stîngă şi trîmbiţele cu mîna dreaptă ca să sune, şi au strigat: ,,Sabia Domnului şi a lui Ghedeon!``

²⁰The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!”

²¹Au rămas fiecare la locul lui în jurul taberii, şi toată tabăra a început să alerge, să ţipe, şi să fugă.

²¹They each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.

²²Cei trei sute de oameni au sunat iarăş din trîmbiţă; şi în toată tabăra, Domnul i -a făcut să întoarcă sabia unii împotriva altora. Tabăra a fugit pînă la Bet-Şita spre Ţerera, pînă la hotarul dela Abel-Mehola lîngă Tabat.

²²They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.

²³Bărbaţii lui Israel s'au strîns, cei din Neftali, din Aşer şi din tot Manase, şi au urmărit pe Madian.

²³The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.

²⁴Ghedeon a trimes soli în tot muntele lui Efraim, ca să spună: ,,Pogorîţi-vă înaintea lui Madian, şi tăiaţi-le trecerea apelor pînă la Bet-Bara, şi Iordan.`` Toţi bărbaţii lui Efraim s'au strîns, şi au pus stăpînire pe trecerea apelor pînă la Bet-Bara şi Iordan.``

²⁴Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

²⁵Au pus mîna pe două căpetenii ale lui Madian: Oreb şi Zeeb; au ucis pe Oreb la stînca lui Oreb, şi au ucis pe Zeeb la teascul lui Zeeb. Au urmărit pe Madian, şi au adus capetele lui Oreb şi Zeeb la Ghedeon de cealaltă parte a Iordanului.

²⁵They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
