¹A stalo sa, keď to počuli všetci kráľovia, ktorí boli za Jordánom, na vrchoch i na nížinách, i na celom pobreží Veľkého mora naproti Libanonu: hetejský, amorejský, kananejský, ferezejský, hevejský a jebuzejský,

¹And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who [are] beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear —

²že sobrali sa dovedna bojovať s Jozuom a s Izraelom jednomyseľne.

²that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel — one mouth.

³Ale obyvatelia Gibeona počujúc to, čo učinil Jozua Jerichu a mestu Haj,

³And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴učinili aj oni chytre. Lebo odišli a vydávali sa za poslov z ďaleka a vzali vetché vrecia na svojich poslov i staré vetché kožice na víno, potrhané a pozaväzované,

⁴and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

⁵i starú, zodranú obuv plátenú na svojich nohách i vetché rúcho zodrané na sebe, i všetok chlieb ich potravy na cestu bol suchý a zdrobený.

⁵and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry — it was crumbs.

⁶A tak odišli k Jozuovi do tábora v Gilgale a riekli mu i mužovi Izraelovmu: Prišli sme z ďalekej zeme, a tak teraz učiňte s nami smluvu.

⁶And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, `From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;`

⁷A muž Izraelov riekol Hevejovi: Možno, že ty bývaš v mojom strede, jakože potom učiním s tebou smluvu?

⁷and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, `It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?`

⁸Na to povedali Jozuovi: Sme tvoji služobníci. A Jozua im riekol: Kto ste a odkiaľ ste prišli?

⁸and they say unto Joshua, `Thy servants we [are].` And Joshua saith unto them, `Who [are] ye? and whence come ye?`

⁹A oni mu povedali: Tvoji služobníci prišli z veľmi ďalekej zeme, pre meno Hospodina, tvojho Boha, lebo sme počuli jeho povesť i všetko to, čo učinil v Egypte,

⁹And they say unto him, `From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

¹⁰i všetko to, čo učinil dvom kráľom Amoreja, ktorí boli za Jordánom, Síchonovi, kráľovi Chešbona, a Ógovi, kráľovi Bázana, ktorý býval v Aštaróte.

¹⁰and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who [are] beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who [is] in Ashtaroth.

¹¹Preto nám povedali naši starší i všetci obyvatelia našej zeme a riekli: Naberte do svojej ruky potravy na cestu a iďte im vústrety a poviete im: Sme vašimi služobníkmi, a tak teraz učiňte s nami smluvu.

¹¹`And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we [are], and now, make with us a covenant;

¹²Toď hľa, náš chlieb! Teplý sme si ho vzali zo svojich domov na cestu toho dňa, keď sme vyšli, aby sme išli k vám, a teraz hľa, je už suchý a je podrobený.

¹²this our bread — hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

¹³A toto sú kožice na víno, ktoré sme boli naplnili nové, a hľa, už sú dotrhané. A toto naše rúcho a naša obuv, zodraly sa od cesty, veľmi dlhej.

¹³and these [are] the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.`

¹⁴A mužovia vzali z ich potravy a neopýtali sa úst Hospodinových.

¹⁴And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

¹⁵A Jozua učinil s nimi pokoj a uzavrel s nimi smluvu, že ich zachová pri živote a prisahali im aj kniežatá obce.

¹⁵and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

¹⁶A stalo sa po troch dňoch, po tom, čo spravili s nimi smluvu, že počuli, že sú z blízka neho, Izraela, a že bývajú v jeho strede.

¹⁶And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they [are] their neighbours — that in their midst they are dwelling.

¹⁷A synovia Izraelovi sa rušali a prišli k ich mestám, tretieho dňa. A ich mestá boly Gibeon, Kefíra, Beerót a Kirjat-jearím.

¹⁷And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day — and their cities [are] Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim —

¹⁸Ale ich nepobili synovia Izraelovi, lebo im prisahali kniežatá obce na Hospodina, Boha Izraelovho, a preto reptala celá obec proti kniežatám.

¹⁸and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

¹⁹A riekly všetky kniežatá celej obci: My sme im prisahali na Hospodina, Boha Izraelovho, a preto sa ich teraz nemôžeme dotknúť.

¹⁹And all the princes say unto all the company, `We — we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

²⁰Toto im urobíme a necháme ich žiť, aby nebolo na nás hnevu pre prísahu, ktorú sme im prisahali.

²⁰this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.`

²¹A tak im povedaly kniežatá: Nech žijú. A rúbali drevo a nosili vodu celej obci, tak ako im vraveli kniežatá.

²¹And the princes say unto them, `They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.`

²²A Jozua ich povolal, hovoril im a riekol: Prečo ste nás preľstili hovoriac: Sme veľmi ďalekí od vás, a vy hľa, bývate v našom strede.

²²And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

²³Preto teraz zlorečení ste, a vždy bude z vás sluha, a budú takí, ktorí rúbu drevo a nosia vodu domu môjho Boha.

²³and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off [from being] a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.`

²⁴A oni odpovedali Jozuovi a riekli: Preto, lebo s istotou bolo oznámené tvojim služobníkom to, čo prikázal Hospodin, tvoj Bôh, Mojžišovi, svojmu služobníkovi, dať vám celú túto zem a zahladiť všetkých obyvateľov zeme zpred vašej tváre, preto sme sa veľmi báli pred vami o svoje životy, a tak sme vykonali túto vec.

²⁴And they answer Joshua and say, `Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

²⁵A teraz hľa, sme v tvojej ruke; tak ako je dobré a jako spravedlivé v tvojich očiach nám učiniť, učiň.

²⁵and now, lo, we [are] in thy hand, as [it is] good, and as [it is] right in thine eyes to do to us — do.`

²⁶A učinil im tak a vytrhol ich z ruky synov Izraelových, a nepobili ich.

²⁶And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

²⁷A Jozua ich dal toho dňa, aby rúbali drevo a nosili vodu obci a oltáru Hospodinovmu, a robia to až do tohoto dňa, na miesto, ktoré kedy vyvolil Hospodin.

²⁷and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.
