¹Toto sú mená synov Izraelových, ktorí prišli do Egypta s Jakobom. Každý prišiel so svojím domom.

¹And these are the names of the sons of Israel who had come into Egypt; with Jacob had they come, each with his household:

²Rúben, Simeon, Lévi a Júda,

²Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;

³Izachár, Zabulon a Benjamin,

³Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;

⁴Dán, Naftali, Gád a Aser.

⁴Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.

⁵A bolo všetkých duší, ktoré pošly z bedra Jakobovho, sedemdesiat duší. A Jozef bol v Egypte.

⁵And all the souls that had come out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt.

⁶A Jozef zomrel i všetci jeho bratia i celé to pokolenie.

⁶And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

⁷A synovia Izraelovi sa plodili a hemžili a množili sa a mocneli prenáramne a naplnená bola nimi zem.

⁷And the children of Israel were fruitful, and swarmed and multiplied, and became exceeding strong; and the land was full of them.

⁸Potom povstal nový kráľ nad Egyptom, ktorý neznal Jozefa.

⁸And there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

⁹A povedal svojmu ľudu: Hľa, ľudu synov Izraelových je viac ako nás a je to mocnejší ľud ako my.

⁹And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we.

¹⁰Nože buďme opatrní voči nemu, aby sa príliš nerozmnožil, a stalo by sa, keby povstala vojna proti nám, že by sa aj on pridal k tým, ktorí nás nenávidia, a bojoval by proti nám a vyšiel by hore zo zeme.

¹⁰Come on, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass that, if war occur, they take side with our enemies and fight against us, and go up out of the land.

¹¹Preto postavili nad ním úradníkov, ktorí vyberali dane, aby ho trápili svojimi bremenami. A ľud vystavil faraonovi mestá skladíšť, mesto Pitom a Ramses.

¹¹And they set over them service-masters to oppress them with their burdens. And they built store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Rameses.

¹²Ale čím viacej ho trápili, tým viacej sa množil a tým viacej sa rozširoval. A hrozili sa synov Izraelových.

¹²But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and spread; and they were distressed because of the children of Israel.

¹³A Egypťania podrobovali synov Izraelových v službu ukrutne ich utláčajúc.

¹³And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with harshness;

¹⁴A strpčovali ich život tvrdou prácou, blatom a tehlami, a všelijakou prácou na poli, a k tomu každou inou svojou prácou, ktorú konali nimi, ukrutne ich utláčajúc.

¹⁴and they embittered their life with hard labour in clay and bricks, and in all manner of labour in the field: all their labour with which they made them serve was with harshness.

¹⁵A egyptský kráľ rozkázal porodným babám hebrejským, z ktorých jednej bolo meno Šifra, a druhej Pua,

¹⁵And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives -- of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other was Puah --

¹⁶a povedal: Keď budete pomáhať hebrejským ženám pri pôrode a budete hľadieť na rodenie, vtedy, ak bude syn, zabijete ho, a keď dcéra, bude žiť.

¹⁶and he said, When ye help the Hebrew women in bearing, and see [them] on the stool, if it be a son, then ye shall kill him, but if a daughter, then she shall live.

¹⁷Ale baby sa bály Boha, a neurobily tak, ako im hovoril egyptský kráľ, lež nechaly chlapcov žiť.

¹⁷But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt had said to them, but saved the male children alive.

¹⁸A egyptský kráľ povolal baby a povedal im: Prečo ste to urobily, že ste nechaly chlapcov žiť?

¹⁸And the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, Why have ye done this, and saved the male children alive?

¹⁹A baby riekly faraonovi: Hebrejky nie sú jako egyptské ženy, lebo tie sú zdravé a silné; prv ako k nim prijde baba, porodia.

¹⁹And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian; for they are strong, and they have borne before the midwife comes to them.

²⁰A Bôh učinil dobre babám, a ľud sa množil a mocneli veľmi.

²⁰And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very strong.

²¹A stalo sa, keď sa baby bály Boha, že im učinil domy.

²¹And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

²²A faraon rozkázal všetkému svojmu ľudu a povedal: Každého syna, ktorý sa narodí, hodíte do rieky, a každú dcéru necháte žiť.

²²Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, but every daughter ye shall save alive.
