¹Tedaj se skloni Jožef na obličje očeta svojega, in jokal je nad njim in ga poljubljal.

¹And Joseph falleth on his father`s face, and weepeth over him, and kisseth him;

²In ukaže Jožef hlapcem svojim, zdravnikom, da naj z dišavami mazilijo njegovega očeta. In zdravniki so pomazilili z dišavami Izraela.

²and Joseph commandeth his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalm Israel;

³In dopolnilo se mu je štirideset dni: v toliko namreč dneh se dovrši maziljenje z dišavami. In jokali so za njim Egipčani sedemdeset dni.

³and they fulfil for him forty days, for so they fulfil the days of the embalmed, and the Egyptians weep for him seventy days.

⁴Ko so pa bili potekli dnevi jokanja za njim, ogovori Jožef dvor Faraonov, rekoč: Če sem res milost našel v vaših očeh, govorite, prosim, pred Faraonom tole:

⁴And the days of his weeping pass away, and Joseph speaketh unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, `If, I pray you, I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

⁵Oče moj me je zavezal s prisego in rekel: Glej, skoraj umrem; v grobu mojem, ki sem si ga izkopal v deželi Kanaanski, tam me pokoplji. Zdaj torej dovoli, da grem gori in pokopljem očeta svojega, in potem se vrnem.

⁵My father caused me to swear, saying, Lo, I am dying; in my burying-place which I have prepared for myself in the land of Canaan, there dost thou bury me; and now, let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and return;`

⁶In reče Faraon: Idi gori in pokoplji očeta svojega, kakor te je zaprisegel.

⁶and Pharaoh saith, `Go up and bury thy father, as he caused thee to swear.`

⁷Šel je torej Jožef gori pokopat očeta svojega, in ž njim so šli vsi služabniki Faraonovi, starejšine hiše njegove in vsi starejšine dežele Egiptovske,

⁷And Joseph goeth up to bury his father, and go up with him do all the servants of Pharaoh, elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

⁸tudi vsa hiša Jožefova in bratje njegovi in očeta njegovega rodbina; samo otročiče svoje in črede svoje in goveda svoja so pustili v deželi Gosenski.

⁸and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and the house of his father; only their infants, and their flock, and their herd, have they left in the land of Goshen;

⁹Šli so ž njim gori tudi vozovi in konjiki, tako da je bil izprevod silno velik.

⁹and there go up with him both chariot and horsemen, and the camp is very great.

¹⁰Ko so pa prišli do Gumna divjih rož, ki je onkraj Jordana, so jokali tam z jokom velikim in silno hudim: napravil je namreč očetu svojemu žalovanje sedem dni.

¹⁰And they come unto the threshing-floor of Atad, which [is] beyond the Jordan, and they lament there, a lamentation great and very grievous; and he maketh for his father a mourning seven days,

¹¹Ko so torej videli tiste pokrajine prebivalci, Kanaanci, žalovanje na Gumnu divjih rož, so rekli: To je hudo žalovanje Egipčanov. Zato se je imenovalo ime tistega kraja Abel mizraim [T. j. žalovanje Egipčanov.], ki je onkraj Jordana.

¹¹and the inhabitant of the land, the Canaanite, see the mourning in the threshing-floor of Atad, and say, `A grievous mourning [is] this to the Egyptians;` therefore hath [one] called its name `The mourning of the Egyptians,` which [is] beyond the Jordan.

¹²Storili so mu tedaj sinovi njegovi natanko, kakor jim je bil zapovedal,

¹²And his sons do to him so as he commanded them,

¹³in nesli so ga sinovi njegovi v deželo Kanaansko in so ga pokopali na njivi Makpeli v jami, ki jo je bil Abraham kupil ž njivo vred v groba posest od Efrona Hetejca, Mamri nasproti.

¹³and his sons bear him away to the land of Canaan, and bury him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place, from Ephron the Hittite, on the front of Mamre.

¹⁴In ko je pokopal očeta svojega, se vrne Jožef v Egipt, on in bratje njegovi in vsi, kar jih je šlo ž njim pokopavat očeta njegovega.

¹⁴And Joseph turneth back to Egypt, he and his brethren, and all who are going up with him to bury his father, after his burying his father.

¹⁵Ko so pa videli bratje njegovi, da je umrl njih oče, so govorili: Morda nas bo sovražil Jožef in nam dočista povrnil vse hudo, kar smo mu storili.

¹⁵And the brethren of Joseph see that their father is dead, and say, `Peradventure Joseph doth hate us, and doth certainly return to us all the evil which we did with him.`

¹⁶Zato pošljejo k Jožefu in reko: Oče tvoj je zapovedal pred smrtjo, veleč:

¹⁶And they give a charge for Joseph, saying, `Thy father commanded before his death, saying,

¹⁷Tako recite Jožefu: Ah, odpusti, prosim, prestopek bratov svojih in njih greh, da so ti hudo storili. Odpusti torej zdaj, prosimo, prestopek hlapcem Boga očeta svojega. Jožef pa se je jokal, ko so oni govoril ž njim.

¹⁷Thus ye do say to Joseph, I pray thee, bear, I pray thee, with the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for they have done thee evil; and now, bear, we pray thee, with the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father;` and Joseph weepeth in their speaking unto him.

¹⁸Nato pristopijo tudi bratje njegovi ter padejo pred obličje njegovo in reko: Glej, tvoji smo hlapci!

¹⁸And his brethren also go and fall before him, and say, `Lo, we [are] to thee for servants.`

¹⁹Jožef pa jim reče: Ne bojte se; kajti sem li jaz na mestu Božjem?

¹⁹And Joseph saith unto them, `Fear not, for [am] I in the place of God?

²⁰Vi ste res hudo nameravali zoper mene, a Bog je obrnil v dobro, da je storil, kakor je danes, in ohranil v življenju mnogo ljudstva.

²⁰As for you, ye devised against me evil — God devised it for good, in order to do as [at] this day, to keep alive a numerous people;

²¹Sedaj torej se ne bojte: jaz bom živil vas in otroke vaše. Tako jih je tolažil in govoril, da jim je seglo v srce.

²¹and now, fear not: I do nourish you and your infants;` and he comforteth them, and speaketh unto their heart.

²²In prebival je Jožef v Egiptu, on in hiša njegovega očeta; in živel je Jožef sto in deset let.

²²And Joseph dwelleth in Egypt, he and the house of his father, and Joseph liveth a hundred and ten years,

²³In videl je Jožef Efraimove otroke do tretjega rodu; tudi sinovi Mahirja, sina Manasejevega, so se rodili Jožefu na kolenih.

²³and Joseph looketh on Ephraim`s sons of the third [generation]; sons also of Machir, son of Manasseh, have been born on the knees of Joseph.

²⁴In Jožef reče bratom svojim: Skoraj umrem, Bog pa vas gotovo obišče in dá, da pojdete gori iz te dežele v deželo, ki jo je s prisego obljubil Abrahamu, Izaku in Jakobu.

²⁴And Joseph saith unto his brethren, `I am dying, and God doth certainly inspect you, and hath caused you to go up from this land, unto the land which He hath sworn to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.`

²⁵In Jožef zapriseže sinove Izraelove, rekoč: Gotovo vas obišče Bog, odnesite potem kosti moje odtod.Nato umre Jožef, star sto in deset let; in ko so ga pomazilili z dišavami, je bil položen v rakev v Egiptu.

²⁵And Joseph causeth the sons of Israel to swear, saying, `God doth certainly inspect you, and ye have brought up my bones from this [place].`

²⁶Nato umre Jožef, star sto in deset let; in ko so ga pomazilili z dišavami, je bil položen v rakev v Egiptu.

²⁶And Joseph dieth, a son of an hundred and ten years, and they embalm him, and he is put into a coffin in Egypt.
