¹Bil je pa eden bolan, po imenu Lazar, iz Betanije, iz trga Marije in Marte, njene sestre.

¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

²Marija, katere brat Lazar je bil bolan, pa je bila ta, ki je pomazilila Gospoda z mazilom in mu utrla noge z lasmi svojimi.

²It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

³Sestri torej pošljeta k njemu, rekoč: Gospod, glej, ki ga ti ljubiš, je bolan.

³The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

⁴Ko pa Jezus sliši, reče: Ta bolezen ni za smrt, marveč za slavo Božjo, da se Sin Božji po njej oslavi.

⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

⁵Jezus je pa ljubil Marto in njeno sestro in Lazarja.

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁶Ko torej zasliši, da je bolan, tedaj ostane še dva dni na tistem mestu, kjer je bil.

⁶When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁷Potem šele veli učencem svojim: Pojdimo zopet v Judejo!

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁸Učenci mu reko: Rabi, ravnokar so te hoteli Judje s kamenjem posuti, pa pojdeš zopet tja?

⁸The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?”

⁹Jezus odgovori: Nima li dan dvanajst ur? Če kdo po dnevi hodi, se ne spotakne, ker vidi luč tega sveta;

⁹Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰če pa kdo po noči hodi, se spotakne, ker ni luči v njem.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹¹To je povedal, in potem reče: Lazar, prijatelj naš, je zaspal; pa grem, da ga prebudim.

¹¹He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹²Reko mu torej učenci njegovi: Gospod, če je zaspal, ozdravi.

¹²The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹³Rekel pa je to Jezus o smrti njegovi; a oni so mislili, da pravi o navadnem spanju.

¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹⁴Tedaj jim Jezus razločno pove: Lazar je umrl;

¹⁴So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵in radujem se zavoljo vas, da nisem bil tam, da boste verovali; pa pojdimo k njemu.

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁶Tedaj reče Tomaž, ki se imenuje Dvojček, součencem: Pojdimo še mi, da umremo ž njim.

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, “Didymus” means “Twin” said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.”

¹⁷Ko torej Jezus pride, ga najde že štiri dni ležečega v grobu.

¹⁷So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁸Bila je pa Betanija blizu Jeruzalema, kakih petnajst tečajev.

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away.

¹⁹In mnogo izmed Judov jih je bilo prišlo k Marti in Mariji, da bi ju tolažili po njunem bratu.

²⁰Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²¹Marta torej reče Jezusu: Gospod, ko bi bil ti tukaj, brat moj ne bi bil umrl.

²¹Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²²A tudi sedaj vem, karkoli poprosiš Boga, ti Bog da.

²²Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²³Reče ji Jezus: Brat tvoj vstane.

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴Marta mu reče: Vem, da vstane ob vstajenju poslednji dan.

²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁵Reče ji Jezus: Jaz sem vstajenje in življenje; kdor v mene veruje, bo živel, čeprav umre;

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁶in vsak, kdor živi in veruje vame, ne umre vekomaj. Veruješ li to?

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷Reče mu: Da, Gospod, verujem, da si ti Kristus, Sin Božji, ki je imel priti na svet.

²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁸In rekši to, odide in pokliče skrivaj Marijo, sestro svojo, rekoč: Učenik je tu in te kliče.

²⁸When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

²⁹Ona pa, ko zasliši, hitro vstane in pride k njemu.

²⁹When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

³⁰Jezus namreč še ni bil prišel v trg, temuč je bil še na mestu, kjer ga je bila Marta srečala.

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³¹Ko pa vidijo Judje, ki so bili ž njo v hiši in so jo tolažili, da je Marija hitro vstala in odšla, gredo za njo, misleč, da gre h grobu, da bi tam jokala.

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³²Ko torej pride Marija tja, kjer je Jezus, in ga ugleda, mu pade k nogam in mu reče: Gospod, ko bi bil ti tukaj, brat moj ne bi bil umrl.

³²Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵Jezus se razjoka.

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁶Judje tedaj reko: Glej, kako ga je ljubil!

³⁶The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁷A nekateri izmed njih reko: Ali ni mogel on, ki je slepemu oči odprl, storiti, da bi tudi ta ne bil umrl?

³⁷Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁸In Jezus se zopet zgrozi v sebi in pride h grobu. Bila je pa votlina in kamen je ležal na njej.

³⁸Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹Jezus veli: Vzdignite kamen! Marta, sestra rajnikova, mu reče: Gospod, že smrdi; zakaj štiri dni je že v grobu.

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰Veli ji Jezus: Ali ti nisem rekel, da boš videla slavo Božjo, če veruješ?

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹Tedaj odvalijo kamen, kjer je mrtvec ležal. A Jezus povzdigne oči kvišku in reče: Oče, zahvaljujem te, da si me uslišal.

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. NU omits “from the place where the dead man was lying.” Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴²Pa jaz sem vedel, da me vsekdar poslušaš; toda zaradi ljudstva, ki okoli stoji, sem to rekel, da bi verovali, da si me ti poslal.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴³In ko je to rekel, zakliče z močnim glasom: Lazar, pridi ven!

⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴In mrtvec izide, povezan na nogah in rokah s povoji, in njegov obraz je bil obvezan s prtom. Veli jim Jezus: Razvežite ga in pustite, naj odide.

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵Tedaj jih je veliko izmed Judov, ki so bili prišli k Mariji in so videli, kaj je Jezus storil, sprejelo vero vanj.

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶A nekateri izmed njih odidejo k farizejem in jim povedo, kaj je storil Jezus.

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷Višji duhovniki in farizeji torej skličejo veliki zbor in reko: Kaj čemo storiti? kajti ta človek dela veliko čudežev.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁸Če ga tako pustimo, bodo vsi verovali vanj; in pridejo Rimljani in nam vzemo i zemljo i narod.

⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁹A eden izmed njih, Kajfa, ki je bil tisto leto veliki duhovnik, jim reče: Vi ničesar ne veste,

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁵⁰in tudi ne premišljate, da je bolje za vas, če eden človek umre za ljudstvo, nego da bi ves narod poginil.

⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

⁵¹Tega pa ni rekel sam od sebe, temuč, ker je bil tisto leto veliki duhovnik, je prorokoval, da ima Jezus umreti za narod;

⁵¹Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

⁵²in ne samo za ta narod, ampak da tudi razkropljene otroke Božje zbere v eno.

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

⁵³Od tega dne torej se posvetujejo, kako naj ga umore.

⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵⁴Jezus pa ni hodil več očitno med Judi, temuč se je umaknil odtod v kraj blizu puščave, k mestu, ki se imenuje Efraim; in tu je prebival z učenci svojimi.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

⁵⁵Bila je pa blizu Velika noč Judov; in veliko jih gre iz dežele gori v Jeruzalem pred Veliko nočjo, da se očistijo.

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁶Iščejo tedaj Jezusa in se pogovarjajo med seboj, stoječ v templju: Kaj se vam zdi? Gotovo ne pride na praznik?Izdali pa so višji duhovniki in farizeji zapoved, če kdo zve, kje je, naj to naznani, da bi ga zgrabili.

⁵⁶Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
