¹พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า "ดูเถิด เราจะส่งทูตของเราไป และผู้นั้นจะตระเตรียมหนทางไว้ข้างหน้าเรา และองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ผู้ซึ่งเจ้าแสวงหานั้น จะเสด็จมายังพระวิหารของพระองค์ คือย่างกระทันหัน ทูตแห่งพันธสัญญา ผู้ซึ่งเจ้าพอใจนั้น ดูเถิด ท่านจะเสด็จมา

¹“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!” says Yahweh of Armies.

²แต่ใครจะทนอยู่ได้ในวันที่ท่านมา และใครจะยืนมั่นอยู่ได้เมื่อท่านปรากฏตัว เพราะว่าท่านเป็นประดุจไฟถลุงแร่ และประดุจสะบู่ของช่างซักฟอก

²“But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like launderer’s soap;

³ท่านจะนั่งลงอย่างช่างหลอมและช่างถลุงเงิน และท่านจะชำระลูกหลานของเลวีให้บริสุทธิ์ และถลุงเขาอย่างถลุงทองคำและถลุงเงิน เพื่อเขาจะได้นำเครื่องบูชาอันชอบธรรมถวายแด่พระเยโฮวาห์

³and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer to Yahweh offerings in righteousness.

⁴แล้วเครื่องบูชาของยูดาห์และเยรูซาเล็มจะเป็นที่พอพระทัยพระเยโฮวาห์ ดังสมัยก่อน และดังในปีที่ล่วงแล้วมา

⁴Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasant to Yahweh, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.

⁵พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า แล้วเราจะมาใกล้เจ้าเพื่อการพิพากษา เราจะเป็นพยานที่รวดเร็วที่กล่าวโทษนักวิทยาคม พวกผิดประเวณี ผู้ที่ปฏิญาณเท็จ ผู้ที่บีบบังคับลูกจ้างในเรื่องค่าจ้าง และแม่ม่ายและลูกกำพร้าพ่อ ผู้ที่ผลักไสหันเหคนต่างด้าวจากสิทธิของเขา และผู้ที่ไม่ยำเกรงเรา

⁵I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.

⁶เพราะว่า เราคือพระเยโฮวาห์ไม่มีผันแปร โอ บุตรชายยาโคบเอ๋ย เจ้าทั้งหลายจึงไม่ถูกเผาผลาญหมด

⁶“For I, Yahweh, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

⁷เจ้าได้หันเหไปเสียจากกฎของเราและมิได้รักษาไว้ตั้งแต่ครั้งสมัยบรรพบุรุษของเจ้า พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า เจ้าจงกลับมาหาเรา และเราจะกลับมาหาเจ้าทั้งหลาย แต่เจ้ากล่าวว่า `เราทั้งหลายจะกลับมาสถานใด'

⁷From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my ordinances, and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says Yahweh of Armies. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’

⁸คนจะฉ้อพระเจ้าหรือ แต่เจ้าทั้งหลายได้ฉ้อเรา แต่เจ้ากล่าวว่า `เราทั้งหลายฉ้อพระเจ้าอย่างไร' ก็ฉ้อในเรื่องสิบชักหนึ่งและเครื่องบูชานั่นซี

⁸Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In tithes and offerings.

⁹เจ้าทั้งหลายต้องถูกสาปแช่งด้วยคำสาปแช่ง เพราะเจ้าทั้งหลายทั้งชาติฉ้อเรา

⁹You are cursed with the curse; for you rob me, even this whole nation.

¹⁰พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า จงนำสิบชักหนึ่งเต็มขนาดมาไว้ในคลัง เพื่อว่าจะมีอาหารในนิเวศของเรา จงลองดูเราในเรื่องนี้ ดูทีหรือว่าเราจะเปิดหน้าต่างในฟ้าสวรรค์ให้เจ้า และเทพรอย่างล้นไหลมาให้เจ้าหรือไม่

¹⁰Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this,” says Yahweh of Armies, “if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough for.

¹¹เราจะขนาบตัวที่ทำลายให้แก่เจ้า เพื่อว่ามันจะไม่ทำลายผลแห่งพื้นดินของเจ้า และผลองุ่นในไร่นาของเจ้าจะไม่ร่วง พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสดังนี้แหละ

¹¹I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field,” says Yahweh of Armies.

¹²พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า แล้วประชาชาติทั้งสิ้นจะเรียกเจ้าว่า ผู้ที่ได้รับพระพร ด้วยว่าเจ้าจะเป็นแผ่นดินที่น่าพึงใจ

¹²“All nations shall call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” says Yahweh of Armies.

¹³พระเยโฮวาห์ตรัสว่า ถ้อยคำของเจ้านั้นใส่ร้ายเรา เจ้ายังกล่าวว่า `เราทั้งหลายได้กล่าวใส่ร้ายพระองค์สถานใด'

¹³“Your words have been stout against me,” says Yahweh. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against you?’

¹⁴เจ้าได้กล่าวว่า `ที่จะปรนนิบัติพระเจ้าก็เปล่าประโยชน์ ที่เราจะรักษากฎของพระองค์ หรือดำเนินอย่างคนไว้ทุกข์ต่อพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธานั้นจะได้ผลกำไรอันใด

¹⁴You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God;’ and ‘What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before Yahweh of Armies?

¹⁵บัดนี้เราถือว่าคนอวดดีเป็นคนได้รับพร เออ คนที่ประกอบความชั่วใช่ว่าจะมั่งคั่งเท่านั้น แต่เมื่อเขาได้ทดลองพระเจ้าแล้วก็พ้นไปได้'"

¹⁵Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.’

¹⁶แล้วคนเหล่านั้นที่เกรงกลัวพระเยโฮวาห์จึงพูดกันและกัน พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงฟังและทรงได้ยิน และมีหนังสือม้วนหนึ่งสำหรับบันทึกความจำหน้าพระพักตร์ ได้บันทึกชื่อผู้ที่เกรงกลัวพระเยโฮวาห์ และที่ตรึกตรองในพระนามของพระองค์ไว้

¹⁶Then those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another; and Yahweh listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared Yahweh, and who honored his name.

¹⁷พระเยโฮวาห์จอมโยธาตรัสว่า "เขาทั้งหลายจะเป็นคนของเรา เป็นเพชรพลอยของเราในวันที่เราจะประกอบกิจ และเราจะไว้ชีวิตคนเหล่านี้ ดังชายที่ไว้ชีวิตบุตรชายของเขาผู้ปรนนิบัติเขา

¹⁷They shall be mine,” says Yahweh of Armies, “my own possession in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.

¹⁸แล้วเจ้าจะกลับมาและสังเกตเห็นความแตกต่างระหว่างคนชอบธรรมกับคนชั่ว ระหว่างคนที่ปรนนิบัติพระเจ้ากับคนที่ไม่ปรนนิบัติพระองค์"

¹⁸Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.
