¹ในวันนั้น เขาอ่านหนังสือของโมเสสให้ประชาชนฟัง และเขาพบที่มีเขียนไว้ว่า ไม่ควรให้คนอัมโมนหรือคนโมอับเข้าไปในที่ชุมนุมของพระเจ้าเป็นนิตย์

¹On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

²เพราะเขามิได้เอาอาหารและน้ำมาต้อนรับคนอิสราเอล แต่ได้จ้างบาลาอัมให้มาต่อต้านและแช่งเขา แต่พระเจ้าของเราทรงเปลี่ยนคำแช่งเป็นพร

²because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: however our God turned the curse into a blessing.

³และอยู่มาเมื่อประชาชนได้ยินพระราชบัญญัติ เขาก็แยกอิสราเอลออกเสียจากคนต่างด้าวทั้งปวง

³It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

⁴ก่อนหน้านี้ เอลียาชีบปุโรหิตผู้ได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้ดูแลห้องในพระนิเวศของพระเจ้าของเรา และผู้เกี่ยวพันกับโทบีอาห์

⁴Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

⁵had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the wave offerings for the priests.

⁶เมื่อเกิดเรื่องนี้ข้าพเจ้ามิได้อยู่ในเยรูซาเล็ม เพราะในปีที่สามสิบสองแห่งรัชกาลอารทาเซอร์ซีสกษัตริย์แห่งบาบิโลนนั้น ข้าพเจ้าได้ไปเฝ้ากษัตริย์ และอีกไม่กี่วันข้าพเจ้าก็ทูลลากษัตริย์

⁶But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king,

⁷และมายังเยรูซาเล็ม แล้วข้าพเจ้าจึงทราบความชั่วร้ายซึ่งเอลียาชีบได้กระทำเพื่อโทบีอาห์ คือจัดห้องภายในบริเวณพระนิเวศของพระเจ้าให้เขา

⁷and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

⁸ข้าพเจ้าโกรธนัก และข้าพเจ้าก็โยนเครื่องแต่งเรือนทั้งสิ้นของโทบีอาห์ออกเสียจากห้อง

⁸It grieved me severely: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room.

⁹แล้วข้าพเจ้าสั่งให้เขาชำระห้อง และข้าพเจ้าก็นำเครื่องใช้ประจำพระนิเวศของพระเจ้า ทั้งธัญญบูชากับกำยานกลับมาไว้ที่นั่นอีก

⁹Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense.

¹⁰และข้าพเจ้ายังทราบอีกว่า ส่วนของคนเลวีนั้น เขาก็ไม่ได้มอบให้ เพราะฉะนั้นคนเลวีและนักร้องผู้ปฏิบัติการงาน ต่างก็หนีกลับไปยังไร่นาของตน

¹⁰I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field.

¹¹ข้าพเจ้าจึงต่อว่าเจ้าหน้าที่และพูดว่า "ทำไมจึงทอดทิ้งพระนิเวศของพระเจ้าเสีย" ข้าพเจ้าจึงรวบรวมเขากลับมา และตั้งเขาไว้ตามตำแหน่งของเขาอีก

¹¹Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

¹²และยูดาห์ทั้งปวงได้นำสิบชักหนึ่งที่เป็นข้าว น้ำองุ่นใหม่ และน้ำมันเข้ามายังเรือนพัสดุ

¹²Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.

¹³ข้าพเจ้าได้แต่งตั้งคนให้ดูแลเรือนพัสดุคือ เชเลมิยาห์ปุโรหิต ศาโดกธรรมาจารย์ และเปดายาห์แห่งคนเลวี และผู้ช่วยของเขาคือ ฮานันบุตรชายศักเกอร์ ผู้เป็นบุตรชายมัทธานิยาห์ เพราะนับได้ว่าเขาสัตย์ซื่อ และหน้าที่ของเขาคือแจกจ่ายแก่พวกพี่น้อง

¹³I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

¹⁴"ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ เกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ขอทรงระลึกถึงข้าพระองค์ และขออย่าทรงลบล้างการที่ดีทั้งหลายของข้าพระองค์ที่ข้าพระองค์ได้กระทำ เพื่อพระนิเวศของพระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ และเพื่อการปรนนิบัติในที่นั้น"

¹⁴Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

¹⁵ครั้งนั้นในยูดาห์ ข้าพเจ้าเห็นคนย่ำน้ำองุ่นในวันสะบาโต และนำฟ่อนข้าวเข้ามาบรรทุกหลังลา ทั้งน้ำองุ่น ผลองุ่น มะเดื่อ และภาระทุกอย่าง ซึ่งเขานำมายังเยรูซาเล็มในวันสะบาโต ข้าพเจ้าได้ตักเตือนเขาในวันที่เขาทั้งหลายขายอาหาร

¹⁵In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

¹⁶และมีคนชาวไทระอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองได้นำปลาและสินค้าทุกอย่างเข้ามาขายในวันสะบาโตแก่ประชาชนยูดาห์ และในเยรูซาเล็ม

¹⁶There lived men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

¹⁷แล้วข้าพเจ้าได้ต่อว่าพวกขุนนางแห่งยูดาห์ และพูดกับเขาว่า "ทำไมท่านทั้งหลายกระทำความชั่วร้ายเช่นนี้ กระทำให้วันสะบาโตเป็นมลทิน

¹⁷Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

¹⁸บรรพบุรุษของท่านมิได้กระทำเช่นนี้หรือ และพระเจ้าของเรามิได้ทรงนำเหตุร้ายทั้งสิ้นให้ตกอยู่บนเราและบนเมืองนี้หรือ ท่านยังจะนำพระพิโรธยิ่งกว่านั้นมาเหนืออิสราเอลด้วยการกระทำให้วันสะบาโตเป็นมลทิน"

¹⁸Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

¹⁹และอยู่มาพอเริ่มมืดที่ประตูเมืองเยรูซาเล็มก่อนวันสะบาโต ข้าพเจ้าได้บัญชาให้ปิดประตูเมือง และสั่งว่า ไม่ให้เปิดจนกว่าจะพ้นวันสะบาโตแล้ว และข้าพเจ้าก็ตั้งข้าราชการบางคนของข้าพเจ้าให้ดูแลประตูเมือง ว่าไม่ให้นำภาระสิ่งใดเข้ามาในวันสะบาโต

¹⁹It came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

²⁰แล้วพวกพ่อค้าและพวกขายสินค้าทุกชนิดค้างอยู่นอกเยรูซาเล็มหนหนึ่ง หรือสองหน

²⁰So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

²¹ข้าพเจ้าได้ตักเตือนเขา และพูดกับเขาว่า "ทำไมท่านมานอนอยู่ข้างกำแพงเมือง ถ้าท่านทำอีกข้าพเจ้าจะจับท่าน" ตั้งแต่คราวนั้นมาเขาก็ไม่มาอีกในวันสะบาโต

²¹Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

²²และข้าพเจ้าบัญชาคนเลวีให้ชำระตัวเขาและมาเฝ้าประตูเมือง เพื่อรักษาวันสะบาโตให้บริสุทธิ์ "ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ ขอพระองค์ทรงระลึกถึงข้าพระองค์ในเรื่องนี้ด้วย และขอทรงไว้ชีวิตข้าพระองค์ตามความยิ่งใหญ่แห่งความเมตตาของพระองค์"

²²I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

²³ในสมัยนั้นข้าพเจ้าได้เห็นพวกยิวผู้ได้แต่งงานกับหญิงชาวอัชโดด อัมโมนและโมอับ

²³In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

²⁴และเด็กของเขาครึ่งหนึ่งพูดภาษาอัชโดด เขาพูดภาษาฮีบรูไม่ได้ แต่พูดภาษาชนชาติของเขาแต่ละพวก

²⁴and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

²⁵ข้าพเจ้าได้โต้แย้งกับเขา และแช่งเขา และตีเขาบางคนและดึงผมของเขาออก และข้าพเจ้ากระทำให้เขาปฏิญาณในพระนามของพระเจ้า ด้วยข้าพเจ้ากล่าวว่า "เจ้าทั้งหลายอย่ายกบุตรสาวของเจ้าให้แก่บุตรชายของเขา หรือรับบุตรสาวของเขาให้แก่บุตรชายของเจ้า หรือตัวเจ้าเอง

²⁵I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁶ซาโลมอนกษัตริย์แห่งอิสราเอล มิได้ทำบาปด้วยเรื่องหญิงอย่างนี้หรือ ท่ามกลางหลายประชาชาติไม่มีกษัตริย์ใดเหมือนพระองค์ และพระเจ้าของพระองค์ก็ทรงรักพระองค์ และพระเจ้าทรงกระทำให้พระองค์เป็นกษัตริย์เหนืออิสราเอลทั้งปวง ถึงกระนั้นก็ดี แม้เป็นพระองค์หญิงต่างชาติก็เป็นเหตุให้พระองค์ทรงทำบาป

²⁶Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

²⁷ควรหรือที่เราจะฟังเจ้าและกระทำความชั่วร้ายใหญ่ยิ่งนี้ทั้งสิ้น และประพฤติละเมิดต่อพระเจ้าของเราด้วยการแต่งงานกับหญิงต่างชาติ"

²⁷Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

²⁸บุตรชายคนหนึ่งของโยยาดา ผู้เป็นบุตรชายเอลียาชีบมหาปุโรหิต เป็นบุตรเขยของสันบาลลัท ชาวโฮโรนาอิม เพราะฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงขับไล่เขาไปเสียจากข้าพเจ้า

²⁸One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

²⁹"ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ ขอทรงระลึกถึงเขาทั้งหลาย เพราะว่าเขาทั้งหลายได้กระทำให้การเป็นปุโรหิต และพันธสัญญาของพวกปุโรหิตและคนเลวีเป็นมลทิน"

²⁹Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

³⁰ดังนี้แหละ ข้าพเจ้าได้ชำระเขาจากต่างด้าวทุกอย่าง และข้าพเจ้าได้ตั้งหน้าที่ของบรรดาปุโรหิตและคนเลวีต่างก็ประจำงานของตน

³⁰Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

³¹ข้าพเจ้าได้จัดให้หาฟืนถวายตามเวลากำหนดและสำหรับผลรุ่นแรกด้วย "ข้าแต่พระเจ้าของข้าพระองค์ ขอทรงระลึกถึงข้าพระองค์ให้เกิดผลดีเถิด"

³¹and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
