¹และอยู่มาในเดือนนิสาน ในปีที่ยี่สิบแห่งรัชกาลกษัตริย์อารทาเซอร์ซีส เมื่อน้ำองุ่นจัดตั้งไว้ตรงพระพักตร์พระองค์ ข้าพเจ้าก็หยิบน้ำองุ่นถวายกษัตริย์ แต่ก่อนนี้ข้าพเจ้ามิได้โศกเศร้าต่อพระพักตร์พระองค์

¹It happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.

²ด้วยเหตุนี้กษัตริย์จึงตรัสกับข้าพเจ้าว่า "ทำไมสีหน้าของเจ้าจึงเศร้าหมอง เจ้าก็ไม่เจ็บไม่ป่วยมิใช่หรือ เห็นจะไม่มีอะไรนอกจากเศร้าใจ" และข้าพเจ้าก็เกรงกลัวยิ่งนัก

²The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

³ข้าพเจ้าทูลกษัตริย์ว่า "ขอกษัตริย์ทรงพระเจริญเป็นนิตย์เถิด ไฉนสีหน้าของข้าพระองค์จะไม่เศร้าหมองเล่าในเมื่อเมืองสถานที่ฝังศพของบรรพบุรุษของข้าพระองค์ร้างเปล่าอยู่ และประตูเมืองก็ถูกไฟทำลายเสีย"

³I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

⁴แล้วกษัตริย์ตรัสกับข้าพเจ้าว่า "เจ้าปรารถนาจะขออะไร" ข้าพเจ้าจึงอธิษฐานต่อพระเจ้าของฟ้าสวรรค์

⁴Then the king said to me, “For what do you make request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

⁵และข้าพเจ้าทูลกษัตริย์ว่า "ถ้าเป็นที่พอพระทัยกษัตริย์ และถ้าผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์เป็นที่โปรดปรานในสายพระเนตรของพระองค์ ขอทรงใช้ข้าพระองค์ให้ไปยังยูดาห์ ยังเมืองซึ่งเป็นที่ฝังศพของบรรพบุรุษของข้าพระองค์ เพื่อข้าพระองค์จะสร้างขึ้นใหม่"

⁵I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

⁶และกษัตริย์ตรัสกับข้าพเจ้า (มีพระราชินีประทับข้างพระองค์) ว่า "เจ้าจะไปนานสักเท่าใด เมื่อไรเจ้าจะกลับมา" จึงเป็นที่พอพระทัยกษัตริย์ที่จะให้ข้าพเจ้าไป และข้าพเจ้าก็กำหนดเวลาให้พระองค์ทรงทราบ

⁶The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

⁷และข้าพเจ้ากราบทูลกษัตริย์ว่า "ถ้าเป็นที่พอพระทัยกษัตริย์ ขอทรงโปรดมีพระราชสารให้ข้าพระองค์นำไปถึงผู้ว่าราชการมณฑลฟากแม่น้ำข้างโน้น เพื่อเขาจะได้อนุญาตให้ข้าพระองค์ผ่านไปจนข้าพระองค์จะไปถึงยูดาห์

⁷Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;

⁸และพระราชสารถึงอาสาฟเจ้าพนักงานผู้ดูแลป่าไม้หลวง เพื่อเขาจะได้ให้ไม้แก่ข้าพระองค์ เพื่อทำคานประตูพระราชวังของพระนิเวศ และทำกำแพงเมือง และเพื่อทำบ้านที่ข้าพระองค์จะได้เข้าอาศัย" กษัตริย์ก็ทรงพระราชทานให้ตามพระหัตถ์อันประเสริฐของพระเจ้าของข้าพเจ้าที่อยู่เหนือข้าพเจ้า

⁸and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

⁹แล้วข้าพเจ้ามายังผู้ว่าราชการมณฑลฟากแม่น้ำข้างโน้น และมอบพระราชสารของกษัตริย์ให้แก่เขา อนึ่งกษัตริย์ทรงจัดให้นายทหารและพลม้าไปกับข้าพเจ้าด้วย

⁹Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.

¹⁰แต่เมื่อสันบาลลัทชาวโฮโรนาอิม และโทบีอาห์คนอัมโมนข้าราชการได้ยินเรื่องนี้ เป็นเรื่องที่ไม่พอใจเขาอย่างยิ่งที่มีคนมาหาความสุขให้คนอิสราเอล

¹⁰When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

¹¹ข้าพเจ้าจึงมายังเยรูซาเล็มและพักอยู่ที่นั่นสามวัน

¹¹So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

¹²แล้วข้าพเจ้าลุกขึ้นในกลางคืน คือข้าพเจ้ากับบางคนที่อยู่กับข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้บอกผู้หนึ่งผู้ใดถึงเรื่องที่พระเจ้าของข้าพเจ้าดลใจข้าพเจ้าให้กระทำเพื่อเยรูซาเล็ม ข้าพเจ้าไม่มีสัตว์อื่นกับข้าพเจ้านอกจากสัตว์ที่ข้าพเจ้าขี่อยู่

¹²I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.

¹³ในกลางคืนข้าพเจ้าออกไปทางประตูหุบเขา ถึงบ่อมังกร และถึงประตูกองขยะ และข้าพเจ้าได้ตรวจดูกำแพงเยรูซาเล็มที่พัง และประตูเมืองที่ถูกไฟทำลาย

¹³I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.

¹⁴แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็ไปต่อยังประตูน้ำพุ ถึงสระหลวง แต่ไม่มีที่ที่จะให้สัตว์ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าขี่อยู่ผ่านไปได้

¹⁴Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.

¹⁵แล้วข้าพเจ้าขึ้นไปกลางคืนทางลำธารและตรวจดูกำแพง แล้วกลับมาเข้าทางประตูหุบเขากลับที่เดิม

¹⁵Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

¹⁶ส่วนพวกเจ้าหน้าที่ก็ไม่ทราบว่าข้าพเจ้าไปไหน หรือข้าพเจ้าทำอะไร และข้าพเจ้าก็ยังไม่ได้บอกพวกยิว บรรดาปุโรหิต พวกขุนนาง พวกเจ้าหน้าที่ และคนอื่นๆที่จะรับผิดชอบการงาน

¹⁶The rulers didn’t know where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.

¹⁷แล้วข้าพเจ้าพูดกับเขาทั้งหลายว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายเห็นแล้วว่าเราตกอยู่ในความลำบากอย่างไร ที่เยรูซาเล็มสลักหักพังลง และไฟไหม้ประตูเมืองเสียนั้น มาเถิด ให้เราสร้างกำแพงเยรูซาเล็มขึ้น เพื่อเราจะไม่ต้องอับอายขายหน้าอีก"

¹⁷Then I said to them, “You see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”

¹⁸แล้วข้าพเจ้าบอกเขาถึงการที่พระหัตถ์ของพระเจ้าอยู่กับข้าพเจ้า เพื่อยังผลดี ทั้งพระวจนะซึ่งกษัตริย์ตรัสกับข้าพเจ้า และเขาทั้งหลายพูดว่า "ให้เราลุกขึ้นสร้างเถิด" เขาก็ปลงใจลงมือทำการดีนั้น

¹⁸I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. They said, “Let’s rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

¹⁹แต่เมื่อสันบาลลัทคนโฮโรนาอิม และโทบีอาห์ข้าราชการ คนอัมโมน กับเกเชมชาวอาระเบียได้ยินเรื่องนั้น เขาทั้งหลายเยาะเย้ยและดูถูกเรา พูดว่า "เจ้าทั้งหลายทำอะไรกันนี่ เจ้ากำลังกบฏต่อกษัตริย์หรือ"

¹⁹But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

²⁰แล้วข้าพเจ้าตอบเขาทั้งหลายว่า "พระเจ้าแห่งฟ้าสวรรค์จะทรงให้เรากระทำสำเร็จ และเราทั้งหลายผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์จะลุกขึ้นสร้าง แต่ท่านทั้งหลายไม่มีส่วนหรือสิทธิหรือที่ระลึกในเยรูซาเล็ม"

²⁰Then answered I them, and said to them, “The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”
