¹Có lời Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cho Giô-na con trai A-mi-tai như vầy:

¹And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

²Ngươi khá chổi dậy! Hãy đi đến thành lớn Ni-ni-ve, và kêu la nghịch cùng nó; vì tội ác chúng nó đã lên thấu trước mặt ta.

²`Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against it that their wickedness hath come up before Me.`

³Nhưng Giô-na chổi dậy đặng trốn qua Ta-rê-si, để lánh khỏi mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va. Người xuống đến Gia-phô, gặp một chiếc tàu đi qua Ta-rê-si. Người trả tiền quá giang, và xuống tàu đặng đi Ta-rê-si với họ, để khỏi mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va.

³And Jonah riseth to flee to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah, and goeth down [to] Joppa, and findeth a ship going [to] Tarshish, and he giveth its fare, and goeth down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah.

⁴Nhưng Ðức Giê-hô-va khiến gió lớn thổi trên biển; trên biển có trận bão lớn, chiếc tàu hầu vỡ.

⁴And Jehovah hath cast a great wind on the sea, and there is a great tempest in the sea, and the ship hath reckoned to be broken;

⁵Những thủy thủ đều sợ hãi, ai nầy kêu cầu thần của mình. Ðoạn, họ quăng những đồ đạc trong tàu xuống biển, để cho nhẹ tàu. Giô-na đã xuống dưới lòng tàu, nằm và ngủ mê.

⁵and the mariners are afraid, and cry each unto his god, and cast the goods that [are] in the ship into the sea, to make [it] light of them; and Jonah hath gone down unto the sides of the vessel, and he lieth down, and is fast asleep.

⁶Chủ tàu bèn đến gần người và bảo rằng: Hỡi người ngủ kia, làm sao vậy? Khá chờ dậy! Hãy kêu cầu Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi. Có lẽ Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ tưởng đến chúng ta, thì chúng ta khỏi chết.

⁶And the chief of the company draweth near to him, and saith to him, `What — to thee, O sleeper? rise, call unto thy God, it may be God doth bethink himself of us, and we do not perish.`

⁷Kế đó, chúng nói cùng nhau rằng: Hãy đến, chúng ta hãy bắt thăm, để cho biết tai vạ nầy đến cho chúng ta là vì cớ ai. Vậy họ bắt thăm, và thăm trúng nhằm Giô-na.

⁷And they say each unto his neighbour, `Come, and we cast lots, and we know on whose account this evil [is] on us.` And they cast lots, and the lot falleth on Jonah.

⁸Bấy giờ họ nói cùng người rằng: Khá cho chúng ta biết vì điều chi mà tai vạ nầy đến trên chúng ta. Ngươi làm nghề gì, và từ đâu đến? Xứ ngươi ở đâu, ngươi thuộc về dân nào?

⁸And they say unto him, `Declare to us, we pray thee, on what account this evil [is] on us? what [is] thine occupation, and whence comest thou? what [is] thy country, seeing thou art not of this people?`

⁹Người trả lời rằng: Ta là người Hê-bơ-rơ, và ta kính sợ, Ðức Giê-hô-va, là Ðức Chúa Trời trên trời, Ngài đã làm nên biển và đất khô.

⁹And he saith unto them, `A Hebrew I [am], and Jehovah, God of the heavens, I am reverencing, who made the sea and the dry land.`

¹⁰Những người ấy cả sợ, và bảo người rằng: Ngươi đã làm việc gì đó? Bấy giờ họ đã biết rằng người trốn khỏi mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va; vì người đã khai ra cho họ.

¹⁰And the men fear a great fear, and say unto him, `What [is] this thou hast done!` for the men have known that from the face of Jehovah he is fleeing, for he hath told them.

¹¹Vậy họ nói rằng: Chúng ta sẽ làm gì về ngươi, hầu cho biển yên lặng cho chúng ta? Vì biển càng động thêm mãi.

¹¹And they say unto him, `What do we do to thee that the sea may cease from us, for the sea is more and more tempestuous?`

¹²Người trả lời rằng: Hãy bắt lấy ta; hãy ném ta xuống biển, thì biển yên lặng cho các anh; vì ta biết rằng ấy là vì cớ ta mà các anh đã gặp phải trận bão lớn nầy.

¹²And he saith unto them, `Lift me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea doth cease from you; for I know that on my account this great tempest [is] upon you.`

¹³Những người ấy bắt tay chèo vào bờ; song không được, vì biển càng nổi lên nghịch cùng họ mãi.

¹³And the men row to turn back unto the dry land, and are not able, for the sea is more and more tempestuous against them.

¹⁴Họ bèn kêu cầu Ðức Giê-hô-va mà rằng: Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va, chúng tôi nài xin Ngài, chúng tôi nài xin Ngài chớ làm cho chúng tôi chết vì cớ mạng sống của người nầy, và chớ khiến máu vô tội đổ lại trên chúng tôi! Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va, vì chính Ngài là Ðấng đã làm điều mình muốn.

¹⁴And they cry unto Jehovah, and say, `We pray Thee, O Jehovah, let us not, we pray Thee, perish for this man`s life, and do not lay on us innocent blood, for Thou, Jehovah, as Thou hast pleased, Thou hast done.`

¹⁵Ðoạn họ bắt Giô-na, quăng xuống biển, thì sự giận dữ của biển yên lặng.

¹⁵And they lift up Jonah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceaseth from its raging;

¹⁶Vì vậy mà những người ấy rất kính sợ Ðức Giê-hô-va. Họ dâng của lễ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va, và hứa nguyện cùng Ngài.

¹⁶and the men fear Jehovah — a great fear, and sacrifice a sacrifice to Jehovah, and vow vows.

¹⁷(2:1) Ðức Giê-hô-va sắm sửa một con cá lớn đặng nuốt Giô-na; Giô-na ở trong bụng cá ba ngày ba đêm.

¹⁷And Jehovah appointeth a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah is in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.
