¹Tại Mích-ba, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên có lập lời thề nầy: Chẳng ai trong chúng ta sẽ gả con gái mình cho một người Bên-gia-min.

¹And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, `None of us doth give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.`

²Ðoạn, dân sự đến Bê-tên, ở lại đó trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời cho đến chiều tối, cất tiếng lên khóc dầm dề;

²And the people come in to Beth-El, and sit there till the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep — a great weeping,

³mà rằng: Ôi, Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, ngày nay thiếu một chi phái của Y-sơ-ra-ên; sao tai họa nầy xảy đến cho chúng tôi?

³and say, `Why, O Jehovah, God of Israel, hath this been in Israel — to be lacking to-day, from Israel, one tribe?`

⁴Qua ngày sau, dân sự đều đứng dậy, xây trong chỗ đó một bàn thờ, dâng lên của lễ thiêu và của lễ thù ân.

⁴And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the people rise early, and build there an altar, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

⁵Vả, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên có thề lời trọng thể nầy: Kẻ nào chẳng đến ra mắt Ðức Giê-hô-va tại Mích-ba, sẽ hẳn bị xử tử! Nên họ bèn hỏi: Trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên có người nào không đến hội đồng trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va chăng?

⁵And the sons of Israel say, `Who [is] he that hath not come up in the assembly out of all the tribes of Israel unto Jehovah?` for the great oath hath been concerning him who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh, saying, `He is surely put to death.`

⁶Song dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ăn năn về điều xảy đến cho chi phái Bên-gia-min, anh em mình, mà rằng: Ngày nay, một chi phái đã truất khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên.

⁶And the sons of Israel repent concerning Benjamin their brother, and say, `There hath been to-day cut off one tribe from Israel,

⁷Chúng ta sẽ làm sao đặng có người nữ cho những kẻ còn sống, vì chúng ta đã nhơn danh Ðức Giê-hô-va thề rằng không gả một con gái nào của chúng ta cho họ?

⁷what do we do for them — for those who are left — for wives, and we — we have sworn by Jehovah not to give to them of our daughters for wives?`

⁸Vậy, chúng nói rằng: Trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, có ai chẳng đến ra mắt trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va tại Mích-ba chăng? Vả, từ Gia-be trong xứ Ga-la-át, chẳng có ai đến vào trại quân tại hội đồng;

⁸And they say, `Who is [that] one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?` and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead — unto the assembly.

⁹vì khi tu bộ dân, thì chẳng thấy có người nào của dân Gia-be ở xứ Ga-la-át.

⁹And the people numbered themselves, and lo, there is not there a man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.

¹⁰Hội chúng bèn sai đến Gia-be một muôn hai ngàn người mạnh mẽ hơn hết, và truyền lịnh rằng: Hãy đi, dùng gươm giết dân cư của Gia-be ở xứ Ga-la-át, luôn với người nữ và con trẻ.

¹⁰And the company send there twelve thousand men of the sons of valour, and command them, saying, `Go — and ye have smitten the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.

¹¹Nầy là điều các ngươi sẽ làm: Hãy tận diệt mọi người nam luôn với mọi người nữ đã làm bạn một người nam.

¹¹And this [is] the thing which ye do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, ye devote.`

¹²Chúng tìm được trong dân Gia-be ở xứ Ga-la-át, bốn trăm con gái đồng trinh chưa làm bạn với người nam, bèn dẫn chúng nó về trại quân tại Si-lô, ở trong xứ Ca-na-na.

¹²And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan.

¹³Toàn hội chúng sai sứ đến người Bên-gia-min rút ở nơi hòn đá Rim-môn đặng giảng hòa cho chúng.

¹³And all the company send, and speak, unto the sons of Benjamin who [are] in the rock Rimmon, and proclaim to them peace;

¹⁴Người Bên-gia-min bèn trở về; dân Y-sơ-ra-ên gả cho chúng những người nữ mình đã dung thứ, để còn sống trong số những người nữ Gia-be ở xứ Ga-la-át; nhưng không đủ cho mọi người.

¹⁴and Benjamin turneth back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for [all of] them so.

¹⁵Vậy, dân sự ăn năn về việc Bên-gia-min, vì Ðức Giê-hô-va có làm khuyết trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên.

¹⁵And the people repented concerning Benjamin, for Jehovah had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.

¹⁶Các trưởng lão của hội chúng nói: Bởi những người nữ của chi phái Bên-gia-min bị tuyệt diệt, thì chúng ta phải làm sao đặng kiếm vợ cho những người còn lại?

¹⁶And the elders of the company say, `What do we do to the remnant for wives — for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?`

¹⁷Lại tiếp rằng: Những người còn sống sẽ nhận được sản nghiệp thuộc về Bên-gia-min, kẻo một chi phái bị truất khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên chăng.

¹⁷And they say, `A possession of an escaped party [is] to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;

¹⁸song chúng chẳng thế gả con gái chúng ta cho họ được, vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên có lập lời thề nầy: Ðáng rủa sả cho kẻ nào gả một người vợ cho Bên-gia-min!

¹⁸and we — we are not able to give to them wives out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.`

¹⁹Vậy, chúng nói: Kìa, tại Si-lô, ở về hướng bắc Bê-tên, phía đông của con đường đi từ Bê-tên lên Si-chem và phía nam Lê-bô-na, mỗi năm người ta giữ một lễ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va.

¹⁹And they say, `Lo, a festival of Jehovah [is] in Shiloh, from time to time, which [is] on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.`

²⁰Chúng bèn khuyên người Bên-gia-min rằng: Hãy đi phục trong vườn nho;

²⁰And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, `Go — and ye have laid wait in the vineyards,

²¹hễ khi thấy các con gái của Si-lô đi ra đặng múa hát rập nhau, thì các ngươi hãy ra khỏi vườn nho, rồi mỗi người trong các ngươi phải cướp lấy một người vợ trong bọn gái trẻ của Si-lô đó; đoạn, trở về xứ Bên-gia-min.

²¹and have seen, and lo, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances — then ye have gone out from the vineyards, and caught for you each his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh, and gone to the land of Benjamin;

²²Khi cha hay anh chúng nó đến kiện cùng chúng ta, chúng ta sẽ đáp rằng: xin hãy làm ơn cho chúng tôi mà gả chúng nó cho họ, vì trong giặc giã nầy, chúng tôi không thế cưới một người vợ cho mỗi người nam trong họ. Lại nữa, chẳng phải chính các anh em đã gả chúng nó cho họ; vì nếu như vậy, chắc anh em phải mắc tội.

²²and it hath been, when their fathers or their brethren come in to plead unto us, that we have said unto them, Favour us [by] them, for we have not taken [to] each his wife in battle, for ye — ye have not given to them at this time [that] ye are guilty.`

²³Người Bên-gia-min bèn làm như vậy; trong bọn người nữ múa hát, chúng cướp lấy một số người vợ bằng số của mình, rồi đi trở về sản nghiệp mình. Chúng xây đắp thành lại, và ở tại đó.

²³And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have taken violently away; and they go, and turn back unto their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.

²⁴Bấy giờ, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ai nấy đều trở về trong chi phái và họ hàng mình; từ nơi đó mỗi người đi về sản nghiệp mình.

²⁴And the sons of Israel go up and down thence at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they go out thence each to his inheritance.

²⁵Ðương lúc đó, không có vua trong Y-sơ-ra-ên; ai nấy làm theo ý mình lấy làm phải.

²⁵In those days there is no king in Israel; each doth that which is right in his own eyes.
