¹Thà một miếng bánh khô mà hòa thuận, Còn hơn là nhà đầy thịt tế lễ lại cãi lộn nhau.

²Tôi tớ khôn sáng sẽ quản trị con trai làm xấu hổ, Và được hưởng phần cơ nghiệp giữa các anh em.

²A wise servant ruleth over a son causing shame, And in the midst of brethren He apportioneth an inheritance.

³Nồi dót để luyện bạc, lò để luyện vàng; Nhưng Ðức Giê-hô-va thử lòng của loài người.

³A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And the trier of hearts [is] Jehovah.

⁴Kẻ làm ác chăm chỉ về môi gian ác; Kẻ hay nói dối lắng tai nghe lưỡi độc hiểm.

⁴An evil doer is attentive to lips of vanity, Falsehood is giving ear to a mischievous tongue.

⁵Ai nhạo báng người bần cùng sỉ nhục Ðấng tạo hóa mình; Ai vui mừng về tai họa sẽ chẳng được thoát khỏi bị phạt.

⁵Whoso is mocking at the poor Hath reproached his Maker, Whoso is rejoicing at calamity is not acquitted.

⁶Mão triều thiên của ông già, ấy là con cháu; Còn vinh hiển của con cái, ấy là ông cha.

⁶Sons` sons [are] the crown of old men, And the glory of sons [are] their fathers.

⁷Lời tốt lành không xứng với kẻ ngu; Môi miệng giả dối lại càng ít xứng cho vua chúa thay.

⁷Not comely for a fool is a lip of excellency, Much less for a noble a lip of falsehood.

⁸Của hối lộ giống như viên ngọc quí trước mặt ai được nó; Dầu nó xây trở phía nào, cũng được may mắn.

⁸A stone of grace [is] the bribe in the eyes of its possessors, Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

⁹Kẻ nào lấp giấu tội lỗi tìm cầu điều tình ái; Còn ai nhắc lập lại điều gì chia rẽ bạn bậu thiết cốt.

⁹Whoso is covering transgression is seeking love, And whoso is repeating a matter Is separating a familiar friend.

¹⁰Lời quở trách thấm sâu vào người khôn ngoan, Hơn là trăm roi đánh vào kẻ ngu muội.

¹⁰Rebuke cometh down on the intelligent More than a hundred stripes on a fool.

¹¹Kẻ gian ác chỉ tìm điều phản nghịch; Vì vậy sẽ sai một sứ giả dữ tợn đi hãm đánh nó.

¹¹An evil man seeketh only rebellion, And a fierce messenger is sent against him.

¹²Thà người ta gặp gấu cái bị cướp con, Hơn là gặp kẻ ngây dại theo điên cuồng nó.

¹²The meeting of a bereaved bear by a man, And — not a fool in his folly.

¹³Tai họa không hề lìa khỏi nhà Của kẻ lấy ác trả thiện.

¹³Whoso is returning evil for good, Evil moveth not from his house.

¹⁴Khởi đầu tranh cạnh, ấy như người ta mở đường nước chảy; Vậy, khá thôi cãi lẫy trước khi đánh lộn.

¹⁴The beginning of contention [is] a letting out of waters, And before it is meddled with leave the strife.

¹⁵Ai xưng kẻ ác là công bình, và kẻ nào lên án cho người công bình, Cả hai điều lấy làm gớm ghiếc cho Ðức Giê-hô-va.

¹⁵Whoso is justifying the wicked, And condemning the righteous, Even both of these [are] an abomination to Jehovah.

¹⁶Kẻ ngu muội thiếu trí hiểu, Thế thì bạc trong tay hắn mua khôn ngoan mà chi?

¹⁶Why [is] this — a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, And a heart there is none?

¹⁷Bằng hữu thương mến nhau luôn luôn; Và anh em sanh ra để giúp đỡ trong lúc hoạn nạn.

¹⁷At all times is the friend loving, And a brother for adversity is born.

¹⁸Kẻ ngu muội giao tay, Chịu làm bảo lãnh trước mặt kẻ lân cận mình.

¹⁸A man lacking heart is striking hands, A surety he becometh before his friend.

¹⁹Ai ưa tranh cạnh ưa tội lỗi; Ai xây cất cửa mình cao kiếm điều hư sập.

¹⁹Whoso is loving transgression is loving debate, Whoso is making high his entrance is seeking destruction.

²⁰Kẻ nào có lòng vày vò không tìm được phước hạnh; Và ai có lưỡi gian tà sẽ sa vào tai hại.

²⁰The perverse of heart findeth not good, And the turned in his tongue falleth into evil.

²¹Ai sanh con ngu muội ắt sẽ có buồn rầu; Còn cha của kẻ ngây dại chẳng được vui vẻ.

²¹Whoso is begetting a fool hath affliction for it, Yea, the father of a fool rejoiceth not.

²²Lòng vui mừng vốn một phương thuốc hay; Còn trí nao sờn làm xương cốt khô héo.

²²A rejoicing heart doth good to the body, And a smitten spirit drieth the bone.

²³Người gian ác lãnh nhẹm của hối lộ, Ðặng làm sai lệch các lối xét đoán.

²³A bribe from the bosom the wicked taketh, To turn aside the paths of judgment.

²⁴Có sự khôn ngoan trước mặt người thông sáng; Song con mắt kẻ ngu muội ở nơi địa cực.

²⁴The face of the intelligent [is] to wisdom, And the eyes of a fool — at the end of the earth.

²⁵Con ngu muội là một điều buồn rầu cho cha, Và một sự cay đắng cho mẹ đã sanh đẻ nó.

²⁵A provocation to his father [is] a foolish son, And bitterness to her that bare him.

²⁶Lấy làm chẳng tốt mà phạt vạ người công bình, Hay là đánh người tước vị vì cớ lòng ngay thẳng của họ.

²⁶Also, to fine the righteous is not good, To smite nobles for uprightness.

²⁷Người nào kiêng lời nói mình có tri thức; Còn người có tánh ôn hàn là một người thông sáng.

²⁷One acquainted with knowledge is sparing his words, And the cool of temper [is] a man of understanding.

²⁸Khi nín lặng, dầu người ngu dại, cũng được cầm bằng khôn ngoan; Còn kẻ nào ngậm môi miệng mình lại được kẻ là thông sáng.

²⁸Even a fool keeping silence is reckoned wise, He who is shutting his lips intelligent!
