¹Chớ khoe khoang về ngày mai; Vì con chẳng biết ngày mai sẽ sanh ra điều gì.

¹Boast not thyself of to-morrow, For thou knowest not what a day bringeth forth.

²Hãy để cho kẻ khác khen ngợi con, miệng con chẳng nên làm; Ðể cho một người ngoài tán mỹ con, môi con đừng làm.

²Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, A stranger, and not thine own lips.

³Ðá thì nặng, cát cũng nặng; Nhưng cơn tức giận của kẻ ngu dại còn nặng hơn cả hai.

³A stone [is] heavy, and the sand [is] heavy, And the anger of a fool Is heavier than they both.

⁴Sự căm gan vốn hung dữ, và cơn giận như nước tràn ra; Nhưng ai đứng nổi trước sự ghen ghét?

⁴Fury [is] fierce, and anger [is] overflowing, And who standeth before jealousy?

⁵Một lời quở trách tỏ tường Hơn là thương yêu giấu kín.

⁵Better [is] open reproof than hidden love.

⁶Bạn hữu làm cho thương tích, ấy bởi lòng thành tín; Còn sự hôn hít của kẻ ghen ghét lấy làm giả ngụy.

⁶Faithful are the wounds of a lover, And abundant the kisses of an enemy.

⁷Kẻ no nê giày đạp tàng mật dưới chơn mình; Song điều gì đắng cũng lấy làm ngọt cho kẻ đói khát.

⁷A satiated soul treadeth down a honeycomb, And [to] a hungry soul every bitter thing [is] sweet.

⁸Kẻ lưu lạc xa cách nơi ở của mình, Giống như chim bay đây đó khỏi ổ nó vậy.

⁸As a bird wandering from her nest, So [is] a man wandering from his place.

⁹Dầu và thuốc thơm làm khoan khoái linh hồn; Lời khuyên do lòng bạn hữu ra cũng êm dịu dường ấy.

⁹Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, And the sweetness of one`s friend — from counsel of the soul.

¹⁰Chớ lìa bạn mình, hay là bạn của cha mình; Trong ngày hoạn nạn chớ đi đến nhà anh em mình: Một người xóm giềng gần còn hơn anh em xa.

¹⁰Thine own friend, and the friend of thy father, forsake not, And the house of thy brother enter not In a day of thy calamity, Better [is] a near neighbour than a brother afar off.

¹¹Hỡi con, khá khôn ngoan, và làm vui lòng cha, Ðể cha có thế đáp lại cùng kẻ nào sỉ nhục cha.

¹¹Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart. And I return my reproacher a word.

¹²Người khôn khéo thấy trước sự tai hại, bèn lo ẩn núp mình; Còn kẻ ngu muội cứ đi qua, và phải mang lấy tai vạ.

¹²The prudent hath seen the evil, he is hidden, The simple have passed on, they are punished.

¹³Hãy lấy áo của người, vì người đã bảo lãnh cho kẻ lạ; Khá buộc người một của cầm, vì người đã đáp thế cho người dâm phụ.

¹³Take his garment, when a stranger hath been surety, And for a strange woman pledge it.

¹⁴Kẻ nào chổi dậy sớm chúc phước lớn tiếng cho bạn hữu mình, Người ta sẽ kể điều đó là sự rủa sả.

¹⁴Whoso is saluting his friend with a loud voice, In the morning rising early, A light thing it is reckoned to him.

¹⁵Một máng xối giột luôn luôn trong ngày mưa lớn, Và một người đờn bà hay tranh cạnh, cả hai đều y như nhau.

¹⁵A continual dropping in a day of rain, And a woman of contentions are alike,

¹⁶Ai muốn ngăn giữ nàng, khác nào ngăn giữ gió, Và như tay hữu cầm lấy dầu vậy.

¹⁶Whoso is hiding her hath hidden the wind, And the ointment of his right hand calleth out.

¹⁷Sắt mài nhọn sắt. Cũng vậy người bổ dưỡng diện mạo bạn hữu mình.

¹⁷Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.

¹⁸Ai săn sóc cây vả, sẽ ăn trái nó; Và kẻ nào hầu chủ mình ắt được tôn trọng.

¹⁸The keeper of a fig-tree eateth its fruit, And the preserver of his master is honoured.

¹⁹Mặt dọi mặt trong nước thế nào, Lòng người đối với người cũng thế ấy.

¹⁹As [in] water the face [is] to face, So the heart of man to man.

²⁰Con mắt loài người chẳng hề chán, Cũng như âm phủ và vực sâu không hề đầy vậy.

²⁰Sheol and destruction are not satisfied, And the eyes of man are not satisfied.

²¹Lò thử bạc, dót thử vàng; Còn sự khen ngợi thử loài người.

²¹A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And a man according to his praise.

²²Dầu con dùng chầy giã mà giã kẻ ngu dại trong cối Chung lộn với gạo, Thì sự điên dại nó cũng không lìa khỏi nó.

²²If thou dost beat the foolish in a mortar, Among washed things — with a pestle, His folly turneth not aside from off him.

²³Hãy rán biết cảnh trạng bầy chiên con, Và lo săn sóc các đoàn bò của con;

²³Know well the face of thy flock, Set thy heart to the droves,

²⁴Vì sự giàu có không lưu tồn mãi mãi, Và mũ triều thiên há còn đến đời đời sao?

²⁴For riches [are] not to the age, Nor a crown to generation and generation.

²⁵Cỏ khô đã mất đi, cỏ non bèn mọc ra, Và người ta thâu nhập rau cỏ núi.

²⁵Revealed was the hay, and seen the tender grass, And gathered the herbs of mountains.

²⁶Lông chiên con dùng làm áo xống cho con, Giá dê đực dùng mua đồng ruộng.

²⁶Lambs [are] for thy clothing, And the price of the field [are] he-goats,

²⁷Sữa dê có đủ làm đồ ăn cho con, Cho người nhà con, và đặng nuôi lấy các con đòi của con.

²⁷And a sufficiency of goats` milk [is] for thy bread, For bread to thy house, and life to thy damsels!
