¹Rô-bô-am trở về thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, bèn nhóm nhà Giu-đa và nhà Bên-gia-min, được mười tám vạn chiến sĩ kén chọn, toan đánh giặc với Y-sơ-ra-ên, để đem nước về Rô-bô-am lại.

¹When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.

²Nhưng có lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Sê-ma-gia, người của Ðức Chúa Trời, rằng:

²But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

³Hãy nói với Rô-bô-am, con trai của Sa-lô-môn, vua Giu-đa, và với cả Y-sơ-ra-ên trong Giu-đa, cùng Bên-gia-min, mà rằng:

³“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,

⁴Ðức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Các ngươi chớ đi lên chinh chiến với anh em mình; mỗi người hãy trở về nhà mình, vì việc này tại ta mà xảy đến. Chúng nghe theo lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va, và trở về, không đi đánh Giê-rô-bô-am.

⁴‘Thus says Yahweh, “You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers! Return every man to his house; for this thing is of me.”’” So they listened to the words of Yahweh, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

⁵Rô-bô-am ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, xây các thành trong đất Giu-đa làm nên đồn lũy.

⁵Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah.

⁶Người xây Bết-lê-hem, Ê-tam, Thê-cô-a,

⁶He built Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

⁷Bết-xu-rơ, Sô-cô, A-đu-lam,

⁷Beth Zur, and Soco, and Adullam,

⁸Gát, Ma-rê-sa, Xíp

⁸and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,

⁹A-đô-ra-im, La-ki, A-xê-ka,

⁹and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,

¹⁰Xô-rê-a A-gia-lôn, và Hếp-rôn, là những thành bền vững ở trong đất Giu-đa và đất Bên-gia-min.

¹⁰and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.

¹¹Người làm cho các đồn lũy ấy vững chắc, đặt những quan tướng ở đó, chứa lương thực, dầu, và rượu;

¹¹He fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of food, and oil and wine.

¹²còn trong mỗi thành, người sắm khiên và giáo, làm cho các thành ấy rất bền vững. Ðất Giu-đa và đất Bên-gia-min đều thuộc về người.

¹²He put shields and spears in every city, and made them exceeding strong. Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.

¹³Những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi trong khắp xứ Y-sơ-ra-ên, đều từ các miền họ ở, đến cùng Rô-bô-am

¹³The priests and the Levites who were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their border.

¹⁴vì các người Lê-vi lìa bỏ địa hạt các thành mình và sản nghiệp mình, mà đến đất Giu-đa và thành Giê-ru-sa-lem; bởi Giê-rô-bô-am và các con trai người đuổi họ đi, không cho làm chức thầy tế lễ của Ðức Giê-hô-va nữa;

¹⁴For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest’s office to Yahweh;

¹⁵Giê-rô-bô-am bèn lập những thầy tế lễ cho các nơi cao, cho các hình tượng dê đực, và bò con mà người đã làm.

¹⁵and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the male goats, and for the calves which he had made.

¹⁶Lại trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, phàm ai rắp lòng tìm kiếm Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, thì đều theo những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi mà đến Giê-ru-sa-lem đặng tế lễ cho Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ mình.

¹⁶After them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

¹⁷Trong ba năm, chúng làm cho nước Giu-đa vững chắc, giúp đỡ Rô-bô-am, con trai của Sa-lô-môn, trở nên cường thạnh; vì trong ba năm ấy chúng đi theo con đường của Ða-vít và Sa-lô-môn.

¹⁷So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.

¹⁸Rô-bô-am lấy Ma-ha-lát, con gái của Giê-ri-mốt, cháu của Ða-vít, làm vợ; lại cưới A-bi-hai, con gái Ê-li-áp, cháu của Y-sai;

¹⁸Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;

¹⁹nàng sanh cho người những con trai, là Giê-úc, Sê-ma-ria, và Xa-ham.

¹⁹and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.

²⁰Sau nàng, người lại cưới Ma-a-ca, con gái Áp-sa-lôm; nàng sanh cho người, A-bi-gia, Át-thai Xi-xa, và Sê-lô-mít.

²⁰After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.

²¹Vả, Rô-bô-am yêu mến Ma-a-ca con gái Áp-sa-lôm hơn các hậu phi khác (vì người có lấy mười tám hoàng hậu và sáu mươi cung phi, sanh ra hai mươi tám con trai và sáu mươi con gái).

²¹Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and sixty concubines, and became the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.)

²²Rô-bô-am lập A-bi-gia, con trai Ma-a-ca, làm trưởng, làm thái tử giữa anh em mình; vì người toan lập con ấy làm vua.

²²Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, the prince among his brothers; for he intended to make him king.

²³Rô-bô-am cư xử cách khôn ngoan, phân tản các con trai mình đi ở khắp trong cõi Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min, nơi các thành bền vững, cấp cho chúng lương thực dư dật, và cưới nhiều vợ cho.

²³He dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, to every fortified city: and he gave them food in abundance. He sought for them many wives.
