¹Giô-ách được bảy tuổi khi người lên làm vua; người cai trị bốn mươi năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; mẹ người tên là Xi-bia, quê ở Bê -e-Sê-ba.

¹Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba.

²Giô-ách làm điều thiện trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va trọn đời thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa.

²Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

³Giê-hô-gia-đa cưới hai vợ cho Giô-ách; người sanh được những con trai và con gái.

³Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he became the father of sons and daughters.

⁴Sau việc này, Giô-ách có ý tu bổ đền của Ðức Giê-hô-va,

⁴It happened after this, that Joash intended to restore the house of Yahweh.

⁵bèn nhóm những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi, mà bảo rằng: Hãy đi khắp các thành Giu-đa, thâu lấy tiền bạc của cả Y-sơ-ra-ên, để hằng năm tu bổ lại cái đền của Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi; khá làm việc này cho mau. Song người Lê-vi trì hưỡn.

⁵He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away.

⁶Vua vời thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Giê-hô-gia-đa, mà bảo rằng: Cớ sao người Lê-vi từ Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem đem nộp thuế, mà Môi-se, tôi tớ của Ðức Giê-hô-va, đã định cho hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên phải dâng cho trại chứng cớ?

⁶The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the tent of the testimony?”

⁷Vì A-tha-li, người nữ độc ác kia, và các con trai nàng đã phá hủy đền của Ðức Chúa Trời; và chúng nó đã dâng các vật thánh của đền Ðức Giê-hô-va cho thần Ba-anh.

⁷For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of the house of Yahweh to the Baals.

⁸Vua bèn truyền dạy người ta đóng một cái hòm, để phía ngoài cửa đền Ðức Giê-hô-va.

⁸So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the house of Yahweh.

⁹Rồi người ta rao cho khắp xứ Giu-đa và thành Giê-ru-sa-lem ai nấy phải đem dâng cho Ðức Giê-hô-va tiền thuế mà Môi-se, tôi tớ của Ðức Chúa Trời, đã định về Y-sơ-ra-ên tại trong đồng vắng.

⁹They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Yahweh the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness.

¹⁰Hết thảy các quan trưởng và cả dân sự đều vui mừng, đem bạc đến bỏ vào trong hòm cho đến đầy.

¹⁰All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

¹¹Khi người Lê-vi thấy trong hòm đựng nhiều bạc, bèn đem nó lên giao cho vua kiểm soát; thơ ký vua và người của thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm đều đến trút hòm ra, rồi đem để lại chỗ cũ. Mỗi ngày họ làm như vậy, và thâu được rất hiều bạc.

¹¹It was so, that whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

¹²Vua và Giê-hô-gia-đa giao bạc ấy cho những kẻ coi sóc công việc trong đền Ðức Giê-hô-va; họ mướn thợ đẽo đá, và thợ mộc, đặng tu bổ đền Ðức Giê-hô-va; cũng mướn những thợ sắt và thợ đồng đặng sửa lại đền Ðức Giê-hô-va.

¹²The king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Yahweh; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of Yahweh, and also such as worked iron and brass to repair the house of Yahweh.

¹³Vậy, các thợ làm công việc, và nhờ tay họ việc tu bổ được thành; chúng làm lại đền của Ðức Chúa Trời như cũ, và làm cho vững chắc.

¹³So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up God’s house in its state, and strengthened it.

¹⁴Khi đã làm xong, chúng bèn đem bạc còn dư lại đến trước mặt vua và Giê-hô-gia-đa; người ta dùng bạc ấy làm những đồ lễ về đền Ðức Giê-hô-va, tức những đồ dùng về việc phụng sự, và về cuộc tế lễ, những chén, và những khí dụng bằng vàng bằng bạc. Trọn đời Giê-hô-gia-đa, người ta hằng dâng của lễ thiêu tại đền của Ðức Giê-hô-va luôn luôn.

¹⁴When they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for the house of Yahweh, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in the house of Yahweh continually all the days of Jehoiada.

¹⁵Vả, Giê-hô-gia-đa đã trở về già tuổi rất cao, rồi qua đời; lúc người thác, được một trăm ba mươi tuổi.

¹⁵But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died; one hundred thirty years old was he when he died.

¹⁶Người ta chôn người tại trong thành Ða-vít chung với các vua, vì người có công lao trong Y-sơ-ra-ên, có hầu việc Ðức Chúa Trời, và tu bổ đền của Ngài.

¹⁶They buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

¹⁷Sau khi Giê-hô-gia-đa đã qua đời, các quan trưởng Giu-đa đến chầu lạy vua. Vua bèn nghe theo lời của chúng,

¹⁷Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them.

¹⁸lìa bỏ đền Ðức Giê-hô-va là Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ mình, mà phục sự những thần A-sê-ra và các hình tượng; tại cớ tội lỗi ấy, bèn có cơn giận của Chúa nghịch cùng Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem.

¹⁸They forsook the house of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols: and wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.

¹⁹Ðức Giê-hô-va sai các đấng tiên tri đến cùng chúng, để dắt chúng trở lại cùng Ðức Giê-hô-va; nhưng chúng không chịu nghe.

¹⁹Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to Yahweh; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

²⁰Thần của Ðức Chúa Trời cảm động Xa-cha-ri, con trai của thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa; người đứng dậy trước mặt dân sự, mà nói rằng: Ðức Chúa Trời phán như vầy: Cớ sao các ngươi phạm các điều răn của Ðức Giê-hô-va? Các ngươi sẽ chẳng may mắn được, vì đã lìa bỏ Ðức Giê-hô-va, và Ðức Giê-hô-va cũng đã lìa bỏ các ngươi.

²⁰The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you disobey the commandments of Yahweh, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.’”

²¹Chúng bèn phản nghịch với người, và theo lịnh vua ném đá người tại trong hành lang của đền Ðức Giê-hô-va.

²¹They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Yahweh.

²²Ấy vậy, vua Giô-ách không nhớ đến sự nhân từ của Giê-hô-gia-đa, cha của A-cha-xia, đã làm cho mình, nhưng giết con trai người đi; khi người chết thì có nói rằng: Nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va xem xét và báo lại cho!

²²Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May Yahweh look at it, and repay it.”

²³Xảy khi đến cuối năm, thì đạo binh Sy-ri kéo lên hãm đánh Giô-ách; chúng nó loán đến Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, giết các quan trưởng của dân, rồi gởi hết những của cướp về cho vua tại Ða-mách.

²³It happened at the end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.

²⁴Ðạo binh Sy-ri kéo đến có ít người, Ðức Giê-hô-va lại phó một đạo binh rất đông vào tay chúng nó, bởi vì họ đã lìa bỏ Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ mình. Như vậy, dân Sy-ri xử hình phạt cho Giô-ách.

²⁴For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.

²⁵Khi chúng đã bỏ đi rồi (vả chúng để người ở lại bị đau nặng), các đầy tớ người bèn phản nghịch cùng người, vì cớ huyết của con trai thầy tế lễ Giê-hô-gia-đa, giết người tại trên giường, và người chết; người ta chôn người tại trong thành Ða-vít, song không phải trong mồ các vua.

²⁵When they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings.

²⁶Nầy là những kẻ dấy nghịch cùng người: Xa-bát, con trai của Si-mê-át, là đờn bà Am-môn, và Giô-xa-bát, con trai Sim-rít, là đờn bà Mô-áp.

²⁶These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

²⁷Còn về việc các con trai người, số cống thuế người phải nộp, và cuộc tu bổ đền của Ðức Giê-hô-va, thảy đều chép trong sách truyện các vua. A-ma-xia, con trai người, cai trị thế cho người.

²⁷Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
