1Giô-ram, con trai A-háp, lên ngôi làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tại Sa-ma-ri, năm thứ mười tám đời vua Giô-sa-phát vua Giu-đa, và cai trị mười hai năm.
1Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
2Người làm điều ác trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, song không giống như cha và mẹ người; bởi vì người có trừ bỏ tượng thần Ba-anh mà cha người đã dựng lên.
2He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.
3Dầu vậy, người cũng ham theo tội lỗi của Giê-rô-bô-am, con trai Nê-bát, tức là tội đã gây cho Y-sơ-ra-ên can phạm. Người chẳng hề chịu bỏ đi.
3Nevertheless he held to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; he didn’t depart from it.
4Vả, Mê-sa, vua dân Mô-áp, nuôi nhiều bầy chiên, hằng năm người tiến cống cho vua Y-sơ-ra-ên một trăm ngàn chiên con, và trăm ngàn chiên đực chưa hớt lông.
4Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he rendered to the king of Israel the wool of one hundred thousand lambs, and of one hundred thousand rams.
5Nhưng xảy ra khi A-háp băng hà, vua Mô-áp dấy nghịch cùng vua Y-sơ-ra-ên.
5But it happened, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6Bấy giờ, vua Giô-ram đi ra khỏi Sa-ma-ri kiểm điểm cả Y-sơ-ra-ên.
6King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.
7Người sai báo với Giô-sa-phát, vua Giu-đa, rằng: Dân Mô-áp đã phản nghịch cùng tôi. Vua có muốn đến cùng tôi giao chiến với Mô-áp chăng? Giô-sa-phát đáp rằng: Tôi sẽ đi; tôi như ông, dân sự tôi như dân sự ông, ngựa tôi như ngựa của ông.
7He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?” He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8Người lại tiếp: Chúng ta sẽ đi lên đường nào? Giô-ram đáp: Bởi con đường của đồng vắng Ê-đôm.
8He said, “Which way shall we go up?” He answered, “The way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9Ấy vậy, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, vua Giu-đa và vua Ê-đôm đồng kéo ra, đi vòng bảy ngày đường, đoạn họ không có nước cho đạo binh và súc vật theo.
9So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days’ journey. There was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them.
10Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên bèn nói rằng: Than ôi! Ðức Giê-hô-va đã gọi ba vua này đến đặng nộp vào tay Mô-áp.
10The king of Israel said, “Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
11Nhưng Giô-sa-phát hỏi: Ở đây há chẳng có tiên tri nào của Ðức Giê-hô-va để chúng ta nhờ người mà cầu vấn Ðức Giê-hô-va chăng? Một đầy tớ của vua Y-sơ-ra-ên thưa rằng: Ở đây có Ê-li-sê, con trai của Sa-phát, là kẻ đã hầu việc Ê-li.
11But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.”
12Giô-sa-phát tiếp: Lời phán của Ðức Giê-hô-va vốn ở nơi người. Vậy, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, Giô-sa-phát, và vua Ê-đôm, bèn đi đến người.
12Jehoshaphat said, “The word of Yahweh is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13Ê-li-sê nói với vua Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Vua và tôi có can hệ gì chăng? Khá đi cầu vấn các tiên tri của cha và mẹ vua. Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên đáp rằng: Chẳng vậy đâu; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va đã gọi ba vua này đến, đặng nộp vào tay Mô-áp.
13Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No; for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
14Ê-li-sê bèn nói: Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân hằng sống, tôi đứng trước mặt Ngài, mà thề rằng, nếu tôi không kính nể Giô-sa-phát, vua Giu-đa, thì tôi chẳng xem vua ra sao, và cũng không thấy đến nữa.
14Elisha said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.
15Nhưng bây giờ, hãy đem đến cho tôi một người khảy đờn. Trong lúc người ấy khảy đờn, thì tay của Ðức Giê-hô-va ở trên Ê-li-sê.
15But now bring me a minstrel.” It happened, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Yahweh came on him.
16Người nói: Ðức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Hãy đào cho nhiều hầm hố khắp trong trũng này.
16He said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Make this valley full of trenches.’
17Vì Ðức Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Các ngươi sẽ không thấy gió, cũng chẳng thấy mưa, thế mà trũng này sẽ đầy dẫy nước, và các ngươi, đều sẽ uống nước được.
17For thus says Yahweh, ‘You will not see wind, neither will you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your animals.
18Nhưng Ðức Giê-hô-va coi sự này là nhỏ mọn quá: Ngài lại sẽ phó luôn dân Mô-áp vào tay các ngươi.
18This is but a light thing in the sight of Yahweh. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
19Các ngươi sẽ phá hủy hết thảy những thành kiên cố, những thành thị tứ, đốn những cây tốt, bít mọi suối nước, và lấy đá làm hư hại đồng ruộng màu mỡ.
19You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’”
20Vậy, buổi sáng, nhằm giờ người ta dâng của lễ chay, thấy nước bởi đường Ê-đôm đến, và xứ bèn đầy những nước.
20It happened in the morning, about the time of offering the offering, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21Khi dân Mô-áp hay rằng các vua ấy đi lên đánh mình, thì nhóm hết thảy những người có thể nai nịch binh khí được trở lên, và đứng tại bờ cõi xứ.
21Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.
22Ngày sau dân Mô-áp chổi dậy thật sớm; khi mặt trời mọc soi trên nước, dân Mô-áp thấy trước mặt mình nước đỏ như máu,
22They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood.
23thì la lên rằng: Ấy là máu! Chắc ba vua ấy đã tranh chiến nhau, đánh giết lẫn nhau. Bây giờ, hỡi dân Mô-áp! hãy đi cướp của.
23They said, “This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!”
24Vậy, chúng đi đến trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên; nhưng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chổi dậy, hãm đánh dân Mô-áp.
24When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.
25Họ phá hủy các thành, ai nấy lấy đá liệng vào lấp các đồng ruộng màu mỡ, bít các nguồn nước, và đốn những cây tốt. tại Kiệt-Ha-rê-sết chỉ còn lại những vách thành: Những quân ném đá cũng vây xông phá các vách đó nữa.
25They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the springs of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth only they left its stones; however the men armed with slings went about it, and struck it.
26Vua Mô-áp thấy mình không thế chống nổi, bèn đem theo mình bảy trăm người cầm gươm, toan xông đến nơi vua Ê-đôm; nhưng không thế nào được.
26When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.
27Người bèn bắt thái tử, là kẻ phải kế vị mình, dâng làm của lễ thiêu tại trên vách thành. Bèn có cơn thạnh nộ nổi phừng cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên; thì họ lìa khỏi vua Mô-áp, và trở về xứ mình.
27Then he took his eldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
