¹Năm thứ ba về đời Giê-hô gia-kim, vua Giu-đa, thì Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn, đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem và vây lấy.

¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

²Chúa phó Giê-hô-gia-kim vua Giu-đa, và một phần khí mạnh của nhà Ðức Chúa Trời vào tay người. Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đem khí mạnh ấy về đất Si-nê-a, vào nhà của thần mình, và để trong kho của thần mình.

²The Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” ; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

³Vua truyền cho Át-bê-na, là người làm đầu các hoạn quan mình, lấy trong con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên, trong dòng vua, và trong hàng quan sang, mà đem đến

³The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

⁴mấy kẻ trai trẻ không có tật nguyền, mặt mày xinh tốt, tập mọi sự khôn ngoan, biết cách trí, đủ sự thông hiểu khoa học, có thể đứng chầu trong cung vua, và dạy cho học thức và tiếng của người Canh-đê.

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

⁵Vua định mỗi ngày ban cho họ một phần đồ ngon vua ăn và rượu vua uống, hầu cho khi đã nuôi họ như vậy ba năm rồi, thì họ sẽ đứng chầu trước mặt vua.

⁵The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.

⁶Trong bọn đó có Ða-ni-ên, Ha-na-nia, Mi-sa-ên và A-xa-ria là thuộc về con cái Giu-đa.

⁶Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁷Người làm đầu hoạn quan đặt tên cho họ: Ða-ni-ên tên Bên-tơ-xát-sa; cho Ha-na-nia tên Sa-đơ-rắc; cho Mi-sa-ên tên Mê-sác; và cho A-xa-ria tên A-bết-Nê-gô.

⁷The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

⁸Vả, Ða-ni-ên quyết định trong lòng rằng không chịu ô uế bởi đồ ngon vua ăn và rượu vua uống, nên cầu xin người làm đầu hoạn quan để đừng bắt mình phải tự làm ô uế.

⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

⁹Ðức Chúa Trời khiến Ða-ni-ên được ơn và thương xót trước mặt người làm đầu hoạn quan.

⁹Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

¹⁰Người làm đầu hoạn quan bảo Ða-ni-ên rằng: Ta sợ vua, là chủ ta, đã chỉ định đồ ăn đồ uống của các ngươi. Lẽ nào vua sẽ thấy mặt mày các ngươi tiều tụy hơn những kẻ trai trẻ khác đồng tuổi với các ngươi, và các ngươi nộp đầu ta cho vua sao?

¹⁰The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.

¹¹Ða-ni-ên bèn nói với Ham-mên-xa mà người làm đầu hoạn quan đã khiến coi sóc Ða-ni-ên, Ha-na-nia, Mi-sa-ên và A-xa-ria, rằng:

¹¹Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

¹²Tôi xin ông hãy thử những kẻ tôi tớ ông trong mười ngày, cho chúng tôi chỉ ăn rau uống nước.

¹²Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.

¹³Sau đó, sẽ nhìn nét mặt chúng tôi với nét mặt những kẻ trai trẻ ăn đồ ăn ngon của vua; rồi ông sẽ làm cho những kẻ tôi tớ ông theo như điều ông đã thấy.

¹³Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.

¹⁴Ham-mên-xa nhậm lời họ xin, và thử họ trong mười ngày.

¹⁴So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁵Mười ngày ấy qua rồi, thấy mặt họ lại có vẻ xinh tươi đầy đặn hơn mọi kẻ trai trẻ khác đã ăn đồ ngon vua ăn.

¹⁵At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

¹⁶Vậy, Ham-nên-xa cất phần đồ ăn ngon và rượu của họ, và cho họ ăn rau.

¹⁶So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

¹⁷Vả, Ðức Chúa Trời ban cho bốn người trai trẻ đó được thông biết tỏ sáng trong mọi thứ học thức và khôn ngoan. Ða-ni-ên cũng biết được mọi sự hiện thấy và chiêm bao.

¹⁷Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁸Ðến kỳ vua định để đem họ đến, thì người làm đầu hoạn quan dắt họ đến trước mặt Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa.

¹⁸At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁹Vua nói chuyện cùng họ; và trong hết thảy bọn họ, không thấy ai bằng Ða-ni-ên, Ha-na-nia, Mi-sa-ên, và A-sa-ria; vậy họ được đứng chầu trước mặt vua.

¹⁹The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

²⁰Vả, khi vua hỏi họ những câu hỏi về mọi sự khôn ngoan sáng suốt, thì thấy họ giỏi hơn gấp mười những đồng bóng và thuật sĩ trong cả nước mình.

²⁰In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

²¹Vậy nên Ða-ni-ên cứ ở đó cho đến năm đầu đời vua Si-ru.

²¹Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.
