¹Vua Bên-xát-sa dọn tiệc lớn đãi một ngàn đại thần mình, và vua uống rượu trước mặt họ.

¹Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

²Vua Bên-xát-sa đương nhấm rượu, truyền đem những khí mạnh bằng vàng và bạc mà vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, cha mình, đã lấy trong đền thờ tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, hầu cho vua và các đại thần, cùng các hoàng hậu và cung phi vua dùng mà uống.

²Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.

³Người ta bèn đem đến những khí mạnh bằng vàng đã lấy từ trong đền thờ của nhà Ðức Chúa Trời, tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; và vua cùng các đại thần, các hoàng hậu và cung phi mình dùng mà uống.

³Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.

⁴Vậy họ uống rượu và ngợi khen các thần bằng vàng, bằng bạc, bằng đồng, bằng sắt, bằng gỗ và bằng đá.

⁴They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁵Chính giờ đó, co những ngón tay của bàn tay người hiện ra, viết trên vôi tường cung vua, đối ngay chỗ để chơn đèn; và vua trông thấy phần bàn tay đó đương viết.

⁵In the same hour came forth the fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

⁶Bấy giờ vua biến sắc mặt, các ý tưởng làm cho vua bối rối; các xương lưng rời khớp ra, và hai đầu gối chạm vào nhau.

⁶Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

⁷Vua kêu lớn tiếng truyền vời các thuật sĩ, người Canh-đê, và thầy bói đến. Ðoạn, vua cất tiếng và nói cùng những bác sĩ của Ba-by-lôn rằng: Ai đọc được chữ nầy và giải nghĩa ra cho ta, thì sẽ được mặc màu tía, được đeo vòng vàng vào cổ, và được dự bật thứ ba trong việc chánh trị nhà nước.

⁷The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

⁸Bấy giờ hết thảy bác sĩ của vua đều vào; nhưng họ không đọc được chữ, cũng không thể cắt nghĩa cho vua được.

⁸Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

⁹Vua Bên-xát-sa lấy làm bối rối lắm; sắc mặt người đổi đi; các quan đại thần đều bỡ ngỡ.

⁹Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

¹⁰Bà thái hậu, vì cớ lời của vua và các quan đại thần đã nói, bèn vào trong phòng tiệc, cất tiếng nói rằng: Hỡi vua, chúc vua sống đời đời! Xin vua chớ để tư tưởng bối rối, chớ đổi sắc mặt đi!

¹⁰ Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: the queen spoke and said, O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.

¹¹Trong nước vua có một người, linh của các thần thánh ở trong nó. Về đời vua cha, người ta thấy trong nó có ánh sáng, sự thông minh, khôn ngoan, như sự khôn ngoan của các vì thần. Vậy nên vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, cha vua, chính cha vua, đã lập người lên làm đầu các đồng bóng, thuật sĩ, người Canh-đê và thầy bói,

¹¹There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

¹²bởi vì Ða-ni-ên mà vua đã đặt tên Bên-tơ-xát-sa, trong người có linh tánh tốt lành, có sự thông biết và khôn sáng để giải nghĩa được những câu kín nhiệm, và làm co những sự hồ nghi tan chảy. Vậy bây giờ hãy sai gọi Ða-ni-ên, và người sẽ giải nghĩa cho.

¹²because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.

¹³Bấy giờ Ða-ni-ên được đem đến trước mặt vua. Ðoạn, vua cất tiếng nói cùng Ða-ni-ên rằng: Ngươi có phải là Ða-ni-ên, một trong các con cái phu tù Giu-đa, mà vua cha ta đã điệu từ Giu-đa về chăng?

¹³Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

¹⁴Ta đã nghe nói về ngươi rằng linh của các thần ở trong ngươi, và người ta đã thấy trong ngươi có ánh sáng, sự thông minh, và khôn ngoan lạ thường.

¹⁴I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.

¹⁵Bây giờ những bác sĩ và thuật sĩ đã được đem đến trước mặt ta để đọc những chữ nầy và giải nghĩa cho ta; nhưng họ không giải nghĩa được.

¹⁵Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

¹⁶Ta nghe nói rằng ngươi có thể giải nghĩa và làm cho những sự hồ nghi tan chảy. Vậy nếu ngươi đọc được chữ nầy và giải nghĩa cho ta, thì sẽ được mặc màu tía, sẽ mang vòng vàng nơi cổ, và dự chức thứ ba trong việc chánh trị nhà nước.

¹⁶But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

¹⁷Bấy giờ Ða-ni-ên cất tiếng và nói trước mặt vua rằng: Vua hãy giữ lại của ban thưởng, và lễ vật vua hãy ban cho kẻ khác! Dầu vậy, tôi sẽ đọc chữ viết đó và giải nghĩa cho vua.

¹⁷Then Daniel answered before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

¹⁸Hỡi vua, Ðức Chúa Trời Rất Cao đã ban ngôi vua và quyền thế lớn, sự tôn vinh và uy nghiêm cho cha vua là Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa.

¹⁸You, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty:

¹⁹Vì cớ Ngài đã ban cho người quyền to, thì hết thảy các dân, các nước, các thứ tiếng đều run rẩy trước mặt người, và sợ hãi người. Người muốn giết ai thì giết, và muốn để ai sống thì để. Người nâng ai cao lên hay hạ ai thấp xuống thì tùy ý người.

¹⁹and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.

²⁰Nhưng vì lòng người tự cao, và tánh người cứng cỏi, làm một cách kiêu ngạo, nên người bị truất mất ngôi vua và lột hết sự vinh hiển.

²⁰But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

²¹Người bị đuổi khỏi giữa các con trai loài người; lòng người trở nên giống như lòng súc vật, và chỗ ở người thì cùng với những lừa rừng. Người bị nuôi bằng cỏ như bò, và thân người bị nhuần thấm sương móc trên trời, cho đến khi người nhận biết rằng Ðức Chúa Trời Rất Cao cai trị trong nước loài người, và Ngài muốn lập ai lên đó tùy ý.

²¹and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky; until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

²²Hỡi vua Bên-xát-sa, con của người, vua cũng vậy, dầu vua đã biết hết các việc ấy, mà lòng vua cũng không chịu nhún nhường chút nào;

²²You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

²³nhưng vua đã lên mình nghịch cũng Chúa trên trời, mà khiến đem đến trước vua những khí mạnh của nhà Ngài, và dùng mà uống rượu, cùng với các quan đại thần, các hoàng hậu và cung phi vua. Vua cũng đã tôn vinh thần bằng bạc, bằng vàng, bằng đồng, bằng sắt, bằng gỗ và bằng đá, là những thần không thấy không nghe không biết gì; và vua không thờ phượng Ðức Chúa Trời là Ðấng cầm trong tay Ngài hơi thở và hết thảy các đường lối của vua.

²³but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

²⁴Vậy nên từ nơi Ngài đã sai phần bàn tay nầy đến, và chữ đó đã vạch ra.

²⁴Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.

²⁵Những chữ đã vạch ra như sau nầy: Mê-nê, Mê-nê, Tê-ken, U-phác-sin.

²⁵This is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

²⁶Nầy là nghĩa những chữ đó: Mê-nê là: Ðức Chúa Trời đã đếm nước vua và khiến nó đến cuối cùng.

²⁶This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and brought it to an end;

²⁷Tê-ken là: Vua đã bị cân trên cái cân, và thấy kém thiếu.

²⁷TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

²⁸Phê-rết là: Nước vua bị chia ra, được ban cho người Mê-đi và người Phe-rơ-sơ.

²⁸PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

²⁹Tức thì, theo lịnh truyền của vua Bên-xát-sa, người ta mặc màu tía cho Ða-ni-ên; đeo vào cổ người một vòng vàng, và rao ra rằng người được dự chức thứ ba trong việc chánh trị nhà nước.

²⁹Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

³⁰Ngay đêm đó, vua người Canh-đê là Bên-xát-sa bị giết.

³⁰In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

³¹Rồi Ða-ri-út là người Mê-đi được nước, bấy giờ tuổi người độ sáu mươi hai.

³¹Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
