¹Sau khi Giô-suê qua đời, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên bèn cầu hỏi Ðức Giê-hô-va, mà rằng: Ai là người trong chúng tôi phải đi lên trước đặng đánh dân Ca-na-an?

¹It happened after the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of Yahweh, “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”

²Ðức Giê-hô-va đáp rằng: Ấy là người Giu-đa phải đi lên; kìa, ta đã phó xứ vào tay họ.

²Yahweh said, “Judah shall go up. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”

³Người Giu-đa bèn nói cùng người Si-mê-ôn, là anh em mình, rằng: Hãy đi lên cùng tôi trong xứ đã bắt thăm về tôi, thì chúng ta sẽ đánh dân Ca-na-an; rồi tôi cũng sẽ đi cùng anh em đến xứ đã bắt thăm về anh em. Người Si-mê-ôn bèn đi với họ.

³Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So Simeon went with him.

⁴Vậy, người Giu-đa đi lên, Ðức Giê-hô-va phó dân Ca-na-an và dân Phê-rê-sít vào tay họ; tại Bê-xéc họ đánh giết một vạn người.

⁴Judah went up; and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they struck of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

⁵Ở Bê-xéc cũng có gặp A-đô-ni-Bê-xéc, bèn xông vào người, đánh bại dân Ca-na-an và dân Phê-rê-sít.

⁵They found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they struck the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

⁶A-đô-ni-Bê-xéc chạy trốn, nhưng chúng đuổi theo, bắt được người, chặt ngón cái của tay và chơn.

⁶But Adoni-Bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

⁷Bấy giờ A-đô-ni-Bê-xéc nói rằng: Có bảy mươi vua bị chặt ngón cái của tay và chơn, lượm vật chi rớt dưới bàn ta. Ðiều ta đã làm, Ðức Chúa Trời lại báo ứng ta. Người ta dẫn vua đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, và người chết tại đó.

⁷Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, scavenged under my table: as I have done, so God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” has requited me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

⁸Người Giu-đa hãm đánh thành Giê-ru-sa-lem và chiếm lấy, dùng lưỡi gươm giết dân cư, và phóng hỏa thành.

⁸The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

⁹Kế ấy, người Giu-đa đi xuống đặng đánh dân Ca-na-an ở trên núi, miền nam, và đồng bằng;

⁹Afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

¹⁰lại đi đánh dân Ca-na-an ở tại Hếp-rôn (tên Hếp-rôn thuở xưa là Ki-ri-át-a-ra-ba), và đánh Sê-sai, A-hi-man, cùng Tanh-mai.

¹⁰Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba); and they struck Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

¹¹Từ đó, người Giu-đa đi đánh dân cư của Ðê-bia (tên Ðê-bia thuở xưa là Ki-ri-át-Sê-phê).

¹¹From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir before was Kiriath Sepher.)

¹²Ca-lép bèn nói: Ai hãm đánh Ki-ri-át-Sê-phe, và chiếm lấy nó, thì ta sẽ gả con gái ta là Aïc-sa cho người ấy làm vợ.

¹²Caleb said, “He who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.”

¹³Bấy giờ, Oát-ni-ên, con trai Kê-na, em thứ Ca-lép, chiếm lấy thành đó, nên Ca-lép gả con gái mình là Aïc-sa cho người làm vợ.

¹³Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

¹⁴Khi nàng đã đến nhà Oát-ni-ên, nàng giục người xin cha mình một miếng ruộng. Nàng xuống khỏi lừa, thì Ca-lép hỏi rằng: Con muốn chi?

¹⁴It happened, when she came, that she got him to ask her father for a field: and she alighted from off her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What would you like?”

¹⁵Nàng thưa rằng: Xin cha cho con một của phước. Vì cha đã định cho con ở đất miền nam, xin hãy cho con những nguồn nước! Ca-lép bèn ban cho nàng các nguồn trên và các nguồn dưới.

¹⁵She said to him, “Give me a blessing; for that you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

¹⁶Vả, con cháu của Kê-nít, là anh em bên vợ của Môi-se, từ thành Cây Chà là đi lên với con cháu Giu-đa, đến trong đồng vắng Giu-đa, ở về phía nam A-rát, và lập chỗ ở tại giữa dân sự.

¹⁶The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

¹⁷Kế ấy, người Giu-đa đi cùng anh em mình, là người Si-mê-ôn, đánh dân Ca-na-an ỏ tại Xê-phát, tận diệt nơi ấy, rồi gọi tên nó là Họt-ma.

¹⁷Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.

¹⁸Người Giu-đa cũng chiếm lấy Ga-xa cùng địa phận nó, Ách-ca-lôn cùng địa phận nó, và Éc-rôn cùng địa phận nó.

¹⁸Also Judah took Gaza with its border, and Ashkelon with its border, and Ekron with its border.

¹⁹Ðức Giê-hô-va ở cùng người Giu-đa; người Giu-đa hãm lấy núi, còn dân sự ở trũng, thì họ đuổi đi không đặng, vì chúng nó có những xe bằng sắt.

¹⁹Yahweh was with Judah; and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

²⁰Kế sau, theo lịnh của Môi-se, người ta ban Hếp-rôn cho Ca-lép! Ca-lép bèn đuổi ba con trai của A-nác khỏi thành ấy.

²⁰They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out there the three sons of Anak.

²¹Nhưng con cháu Bên-gia-min không đuổi được dân Giê-bu-sít ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, nên dân Giê-bu-sít hãy còn ở chung cùng con cháu Bên-gia-min cho đến ngày nay.

²¹The children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

²²Còn nhà Giô-sép cũng lên đánh Bê-tên, và Ðức Giê-hô-va ở cùng họ.

²²The house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Yahweh was with them.

²³Vậy, nhà Giô-sép sai do thám Bê-tên; tên thành nầy lúc trước là Lu-xơ.

²³The house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

²⁴Những kẻ do thám thấy một người ở thành đi ra, bèn nói cùng người rằng; Xin chỉ cho chúng ta ngõ nào đi vào thành được, thì chúng ta sẽ làm ơn cho ngươi.

²⁴The watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”

²⁵Người bèn chỉ cho họ ngõ người ta đi vào thành được; chúng bèn lấy gươm đánh giết thành; nhưng để cho người đó và cả nhà người đi.

²⁵He showed them the entrance into the city; and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

²⁶Ðoạn, người ấy đi vào xứ dân Hê-tít, xây một cái thành tại đó, và đặt tên là Lu-xơ, hãy còn gọi vậy cho đến ngày nay.

²⁶The man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.

²⁷Người Ma-na-se không đuổi được dân cư của Bết-Sê-an và của các thành địa hạt nó, cũng chẳng đuổi dân cư của Tha-a-nác và của các thành địa hạt nó, hoặc dân ở Ðô-rơ và dân ở các thành địa hạt nó, hoặc dân ở Gíp-lê-am và dân ở trong các thành địa hạt nó, hoặc dân ở Mê-ghi-đô và dân ở các thành địa hạt nó, thì cũng chẳng đuổi đi, vì dân Ca-na-an quyết định ở trong xứ ấy.

²⁷Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

²⁸Xảy khi Y-sơ-ra-ên trở nên cường thạnh, thì bắt dân Ca-na-an phục dịch; nhưng không có đuổi chúng nó đi hết.

²⁸It happened, when Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out.

³⁰Zebulun didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.

³¹Người A-se cũng chẳng đuổi dân ở A-cô, hoặc dân ở Si-đôn, dân ở Ách-láp, dân ơ Aïc-xíp, dân ở Hên-ba, dân ở A-phéc hay là dân ở Rê-hốp.

³¹Asher didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

³²Người A-se lập sản nghiệp ở giữa dân Ca-na-an, là dân bổn xứ; vì người A-se không đuổi chúng nó đi.

³²but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

³³Người Nép-ta-li không đuổi dân ở Bết-Sê-mết và Bết-a-nát; nhưng lập sản nghiệp ở giữa dân Ca-na-an, là dân bổn xứ; còn dân Bết-Sê-mết và dân Bết-a-nát phải phục dịch người Nép-ta-li.

³³Naphtali didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labor.

³⁴Dân A-mô-rít dồn người Ðan ở trên núi, không cho họ xuống trũng.

³⁴The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country; for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;

³⁵Dân A-mô-rít định ở tại núi Hê-re, A-gia-lôn, và Sa-an-bim; nhưng tay của nhà Giô-sép thắng chúng nó, nên chúng nó phải phục dịch.

³⁵but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.

³⁶Ðịa phận dân A-mô-rít chạy từ dốc Aïc-ráp-bim, từ Sê-la trở lên.

³⁶The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
