¹Trong đời các quan xét, một cơn đói kém xảy đến trong xứ, có một người từ Bết-lê-hem xứ Giu-đa, đi với vợ và hai con trai mình đến kiều ngụ trong xứ Mô-áp.

¹It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

²Người tên là Ê-li-mê-léc, vợ tên là Na-ô-mi, hai con trai tên là Mạc-lôn và Ki-li-ôn, đều là dân Ê-phơ-rát về Bết-lê-hem trong xứ Giu-đa. Ðến xứ Mô-áp, chúng bèn ở tại đó.

²The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

³Ê-li-mê-léc, chồng của Na-ô-mi, qua đời, để nàng lại với hai con trai mình.

³Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

⁴Chúng nó cưới vợ trong người nữ Mô-áp, người nầy tên là Oït-ba, người kia tên là Ru-tơ; họ ở tại đó độ mười năm.

⁴They took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years.

⁵Kế sau, Mạc-lôn và Ki-li-ôn cũng thác, để Na-ô-mi ở lại, không chồng không con.

⁵Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.

⁶Bấy giờ, Na-ô-mi có nghe nói rằng Ðức Giê-hô-va đã đoái xem dân sự Ngài, và ban lương thực cho, bèn đứng dậy cùng hai dâu mình, đặng từ xứ Mô-áp trở về.

⁶Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. had visited his people in giving them bread.

⁷Vậy, người lìa bỏ chỗ mình đã ở, cùng hai dâu mình lên đường đặng trở về xứ Giu-đa.

⁷She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

⁸Nhưng Na-ô-mi nói cùng hai dâu mình rằng: Mỗi con hãy trở về nhà mẹ mình đi. Cầu Ðức Giê-hô-va lấy ơn đãi hai con như hai con đã đãi các người thác của chúng ta, và đã đãi chính mình ta!

⁸Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

⁹Nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va ban cho hai con được bình yên ở nơi nhà chồng mới! Rồi người ôm hôn hai nàng, còn hai nàng cất tiếng lên khóc,

⁹Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

¹⁰và nói rằng: Chúng tôi sẽ đi với mẹ đến quê hương của mẹ.

¹⁰They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”

¹¹Ma-ô-mi đáp: Hỡi con gái ta, hãy trở về, đi với mẹ làm chi? Mẹ há còn những con trai trong lòng có thế làm chồng chúng con sao?

¹¹Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

¹²Hỡi hai con gái ta, hãy trở về đi đi; mẹ già quá mà lấy chồng nữa. Lại dầu bây giờ mẹ nói chiều nay ta sẽ có chồng, dẫu ta sanh đẻ con trai đi nữa,

¹²Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;

¹³chúng con há lại muốn đợi cho đến chúng nó khôn lớn, và không lấy chồng khác hay sao? Không, hỡi chúng con, nỗi sầu thảm của mẹ cay đắng muôn phần hơn của chúng con, vì tay của Ðức Giê-hô-va đã giơ ra hại mẹ.

¹³would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me.”

¹⁴Hai nàng lại cất tiếng lên khóc. Ðoạn, Oït-ba hôn và từ biệt bà gia mình; còn Ru-tơ không chịu phân rẽ người.

¹⁴They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth joined with her.

¹⁵Na-ô-mi nói cùng Ru-tơ rằng: Nầy, chị con đã trở về quê hương và thần của nó; con hãy trở về theo nó đi.

¹⁵She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”

¹⁶Ru-tơ thưa rằng: Xin chớ nài tôi phân rẽ mẹ; vì mẹ đi đâu, tôi sẽ đi đó; mẹ ở nơi nào, tôi sẽ ở nơi đó. Dân sự của mẹ, tức là dân sự của tôi; Ðức Chúa Trời của mẹ, tức là Ðức Chúa Trời của tôi;

¹⁶Ruth said, “Don’t entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” my God;

¹⁷mẹ thác nơi nào, tôi muốn thác và được chôn nơi đó. Ví bằng có sự chi khác hơn sự chết phân cách tôi khỏi mẹ, nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va giáng họa cho tôi!

¹⁷where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me.”

¹⁸Na-ô-mi thấy nàng quyết định theo mình, nên không nói nữa.

¹⁸When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.

¹⁹Vậy, hai người đi đến Bết-lê-hem. Khi hai người đến, cả thành đều cảm động. Các người nữ hỏi rằng: Ấy có phải Na-ô-mi chăng?

¹⁹So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”

²⁰Người đáp: Chớ gọi tôi là Na-ô-mi, hãy gọi là Ma-ra, vì Ðấng Toàn năng đã đãi tôi cách cay đắng lắm.

²⁰She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

²¹Tôi đi ra được đầy dẫy, nhưng Ðức Giê-hô-va dắt tôi về tay không. Ðức Giê-hô-va đã giáng họa cho tôi, và Ðấng Toàn năng khiến tôi bị khốn khổ, vậy còn gọi tôi là Na-ô-mi làm chi?

²¹I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty; why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

²²Na-ô-mi và Ru-tơ, người Mô-áp, dâu của Na-ô-mi, từ ở xứ Mô-áp trở về là như vậy. Hai người đến Bết-lê-hem nhằm đầu mùa gặt lúa mạch.

²²So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
