1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”
1در این وقت ناحاش عَمونی با سپاه خود بقصد حمله علیه اسرائیل در مقابل یابیش جِلعاد اردو زدند. مردم آنجا به ناحاش پیشنهاد صلح کرده گفتند: «با ما پیمان ببند و ما خدمت ترا می کنیم.»
2Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Israel.”
2ناحاش گفت: «بسیار خوب، به یک شرط با شما پیمان می بندم که من باید چشم راست هر کدام تان را از کاسه بیرون کنم تا همۀ مردم اسرائیل سرافگنده شوند!»
3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven day, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”
3ریش سفیدان یابیش به او گفتند: «برای ما یک هفته مهلت بده تا قاصدانی را برای کمک به سراسر کشور اسرائیل بفرستیم. اگر کسی برای نجات ما نیامد، آنگاه ما به تو تسلیم می شویم.»
4Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
4وقتی قاصدان به جِبعَه که مسکن شائول بود، آمدند و به مردم از وضع بد خود خبر دادند، همگی با آواز بلند گریه کردند.
5Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
5در این وقت شائول مصروف قلبه کردن زمین بود و چون به شهر برگشت از مردم پرسید: «چه واقعه شده است؟ چرا همگی گریه می کنند؟» آن ها او را از خبری که قاصدان یابیش آورده بودند، آگاه ساختند.
6The Spirit of God came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.
6وقتی شائول آن سخنان را شنید، روح خداوند بر او قرار گرفت و بشدت خشمگین شد.
7He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
7آنگاه یک جوره گاو را گرفته آن ها را تکه تکه کرد و به قاصدان داد تا به سراسر کشور اسرائیل تقسیم کنند و به مردم بگویند: «هر کسی که نیاید و بدنبال شائول و سموئیل نرود، گاوهایش با چنین سرنوشتی دچار می شوند.» بنابراین، ترس خدا بنی اسرائیل را فراگرفته، همگی با یکدل برای جنگ آماده شدند.
8He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
8وقتی آن ها را در بازِق شمار کردند، تعداد شان سه صد هزار به اضافۀ سی هزار نفر از یهودا بود.
9They said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
9بعد قاصدان را دوباره با این پیغام فرستاد: «فردا پیش از ظهر نجات می یابید.» چون قاصدان به یابیش آمدند و پیغام شائول را به مردم رساندند، همگی خوشحال شدند.
10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”
10پس مردم یابیش به دشمنان گفتند: «ما فردا خود را تسلیم می کنیم و آنوقت هرچه دل تان بخواهد، با ما بکنید.»
11It was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
11روز دیگر شائول آمد و مردم را به سه دسته تقسیم کرد و هنگام صبح یک حملۀ ناگهانی را بر عمونیان شروع نموده تا ظهر به کشتار آن ها پرداخت. کسانی که باقی ماندند، طوری پراگنده شدند که حتی دو نفر شان هم یکجا با هم دیده نمی شدند.
12The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”
12بعد مردم به سموئیل گفتند: «کجا هستند آن کسانی که می گفتند شائول نباید پادشاه ما باشد؟ آن ها را بیاورید تا سرهای شان را از تن جدا کنیم.»
13Saul said, “There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel.”
13اما شائول گفت: «حتی یک نفر هم نباید در این روز کشته شود، زیرا خداوند امروز اسرائیل را نجات داد.»
14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”
14بعد سموئیل به مردم گفت: «بیائید به جِلجال برویم و سلطنت را سر از نو برقرار کنیم.»پس همۀ مردم به جِلجال رفتند. در آنجا شائول را در حضور خداوند پادشاه خود ساختند و برای خداوند قربانی سلامتی تقدیم نمودند و شائول و همۀ قوم اسرائیل خوشی کردند و جشن گرفتند.
15All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
15پس همۀ مردم به جِلجال رفتند. در آنجا شائول را در حضور خداوند پادشاه خود ساختند و برای خداوند قربانی سلامتی تقدیم نمودند و شائول و همۀ قوم اسرائیل خوشی کردند و جشن گرفتند.
