¹The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

¹در این وقت عساکر اسرائیل برای جنگ با فلسطینی ها آماده شدند. آن ها در اَبَن عَزَر و فلسطینی ها در اَفِیق موضع گرفتند.

²The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was struck before the Philistines; and they killed of the army in the field about four thousand men.

²فلسطینی ها برای مقابله با اسرائیل صف آراستند و جنگ شروع شد. در نتیجه، اسرائیل با از دست دادن چهار هزار نفر در میدان جنگ بوسیلۀ فلسطینی ها شکست خورد.

³When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh struck us today before the Philistines? Let us get the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of Shiloh to us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

³بعد از جنگ وقتی اردوی اسرائیل به قرارگاه خود برگشت، ریش سفیدان قوم گفتند: «چرا خداوند خواست که ما از دست فلسطینی ها شکست بخوریم؟ بیائید که صندوق پیمان خداوند را از شیلوه بیاوریم تا خداوند در بین ما باشد و ما را از خطر دشمنان نگهدارد.»

⁴So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁴پس چند نفر را به شیلوه فرستادند و صندوق پیمان خداوند قادر مطلق را که در بین دو مجسمۀ کروبین (فرشته های مقرب) قرار داشت آوردند. حُفنی و فینِحاس، دو پسر عیلی، صندوق پیمان خداوند را همراهی می کردند.

⁵When the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

⁵وقتیکه مردم اسرائیل صندوق پیمان خداوند را دیدند، از خوشی چنان فریاد زدند که زمین بلرزه آمد.

⁶When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.

⁶چون فلسطینی ها آواز فریاد آن ها را شنیدند، گفتند: «این صدای فریاد که از اردوی عبرانیان می آید برای چیست؟» وقتی دانستند که آن ها صندوق پیمان خداوند را در اردوگاه خود آورده اند،

⁷The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

⁷بسیار ترسیدند و گفتند: «وای بر ما، زیرا خدائی در اردوگاه آمده است.

⁸Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

⁸وای به حال ما، چه کسی می تواند ما را از دست خدایان نجات بدهد؟ اینها همان خدایانی هستند که مردم مصر را در بیابان با بلاهای مختلفی از بین بردند.

⁹Be strong, and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

⁹ای فلسطینی ها، شجاع و با جرأت باشید، مبادا مثلیکه عبرانیان غلام ما بودند، ما غلام آن ها شویم. شجاعت نشان بدهید و مردانه وار بجنگید.»

¹⁰The Philistines fought, and Israel was struck, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

¹⁰به این ترتیب، فلسطینی ها به جنگ رفتند و اسرائیل را شکست دادند. عساکر اسرائیل همه فرار کرده به خانه های خود برگشتند. در این جنگ سی هزار عسکر اسرائیلی کشته شدند.

¹¹The ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹¹صندوق پیمان خدا به دست فلسطینی ها افتاد و دو پسر عیلی، حُفنی و فینِحاس هم کشته شدند.

¹²There ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn, and with earth on his head.

¹²مردی از قبیلۀ بنیامین از صف لشکر گریخت و با جامۀ دریده و خاک بر سر، همان روز به شیلوه رفت.

¹³When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

¹³وقتی به آنجا رسید، عیلی را دید که در کنار سرک بر چوکی خود نشسته منتظر شنیدن اخبار جنگ می باشد، زیرا دلش بخاطر صندوق پیمان خداوند آرام نداشت. به مجردیکه آن مرد داخل شهر شد و خبر جنگ را به مردم داد، تمام مردم شهر فریاد برآوردند.

¹⁴When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

¹⁴چون صدای فریاد بگوش عیلی رسید پرسید: «اینهمه غوغا بخاطر چیست؟» آن مرد دویده آمد تا واقعه را برای عیلی بیان کند.

¹⁵Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.

¹⁵در آن وقت عیلی نودوهشت ساله و چشمانش نابینا شده بودند.

¹⁶The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

¹⁶آن مرد به عیلی گفت: «من امروز از میدان جنگ گریخته به اینجا آمدم.» عیلی پرسید: «فرزندم، وضع جنگ چطور بود؟»

¹⁷He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

¹⁷قاصد جواب داد: «عساکر اسرائیل از دست فلسطینی ها شکست خوردند و فرار کردند. مردم زیادی کشته شدند و در بین کشته شدگان دو پسرت، حُفنی و فینِحاس هم بودند. علاوه برآن، صندوق پیمان خدا هم به دست دشمن افتاد.»

¹⁸It happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

¹⁸بمجردیکه عیلی از صندوق پیمان خداوند خبر شد، از چوکی به پشت افتاد و گردنش شکست و جان داد، چونکه بسیار پیر و سنگین بود. عیلی مدت چهل سال بر قوم اسرائیل داوری کرد.

¹⁹His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered. When she heard the news that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

¹⁹عروس او، زن فینِحاس که حامله و زمان وضع حمل او نزدیک شده بود، وقتی شنید که صندوق پیمان خداوند به دست فلسطینی ها افتاده و خسر و شوهرش هم مرده اند، درد زایمان برایش پیش آمد. دفعتاً خم شد و طفلی بدنیا آورد.

²⁰About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid; for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

²⁰او در حالیکه جان می داد، زنان پرستار او گفتند: «غم نخور، زیرا صاحب پسری شده ای.» اما او جوابی نداد و به حرف شان اعتنائی نکرد.

²¹She named the child Ichabod, “Ichabod” means “no glory.” saying, “The glory has departed from Israel”; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

²¹طفل را «اِیخابود» نامید، یعنی عزت و آبروی اسرائیل برباد شد. زیرا صندوق پیمان خداوند و همچنین خسر و شوهرش از دست رفتند.پس گفت: «عزت و آبروی اسرائیل برباد رفت، زیرا که صندوق پیمان خداوند به دست دشمن افتاد.»

²²She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.”

²²پس گفت: «عزت و آبروی اسرائیل برباد رفت، زیرا که صندوق پیمان خداوند به دست دشمن افتاد.»
