¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

¹پس آن ها از آمفیپولیس و آپولونیا گذشتند و به تسالونیکی که کنیسه یهود در آن واقع بود رسیدند.

²Paul, as was his custom, went in to them, and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

²پولُس به پیروی از شیوۀ همیشگی خود داخل کنیسه شد و در سه روز سَبَت به طور متوالی با استفاده از کلام خدا با آنها مباحثه می کرد

³explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

³و توضیح می داد و دلیل می آورد که لازم بود مسیح رنج ببیند و پس از مرگ زنده گردد. او می گفت: «عیسی که من به شما اعلام می کنم همان مسیح است.»

⁴Some of them were persuaded, and joined Paul and Silas, of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.

⁴عده ای از آنها و همچنین گروه زیادی از یونانیان خدا پرست و زنان سرشناش متقاعد شدند و به پولُس و سیلاس گرویدند.

⁵But the unpersuaded Jews took along TR reads “And the Jews who were unpersuaded, becoming envious and taking along” instead of “But the unpersuaded Jews took along” some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵اما یهودیان در آتش حسد می سوختند. آنها عدۀ از اوباش بازاری را گرد آورده دسته ای به راه انداختند و هیاهویی در شهر برپا کرده به خانه یاسون هجوم بردند تا پولُس و سیلاس را به میان جمعیت بیاورند.

⁶When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers The word for “brothers” here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” before the rulers of the city, crying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

⁶وقتی آنها را نیافتند یاسون و عده ای از برادران را پیش انجمن شهر کشیدند و فریاد می کردند: «این کسانی که دنیا را به هم ریخته اند حالا به اینجا آمده اند

⁷whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!”

⁷و یاسون آنها را به خانۀ خود برده است. اینها همه خلاف احکام امپراطور عمل می کنند و ادعا دارند پادشاه دیگری به نام عیسی وجود دارد.»

⁸The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.

⁸با شنیدن این جمله جمعیت و انجمن شهر به شدت به هیجان آمدند.

⁹When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

⁹ولی به هر حال یاسون و دیگران را در مقابل دریافت ضمانت آزاد کردند.

¹⁰The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

¹⁰وقتی که تاریکی شد برادران، پولُس و سیلاس را به بیریه روانه کردند و وقتی به آنجا رسیدند به کنیسه یهود رفتند.

¹¹Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

¹¹یهودیان مقیم آنجا از یهودیان تسالونیکی روشنفکرتر بودند. آن ها با علاقه کامل به پیام پولُس و سیلاس گوش می دادند و هر روز نوشته ها را مطالعه می کردند تا ببینند آیا آن سخنان مطابق کتب است یا نه.

¹²Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men.

¹²بنابراین بسیاری از آنها و عدۀ زیادی از زنان و مردان متنفذ یونانی ایمان آوردند.

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes.

¹³ولی وقتی یهودیان در تسالونیکی اطلاع یافتند که پولُس در بیریه نیز کلام خدا را منتشر ساخته است، به آنجا آمدند تا مردم را بشورانند.

¹⁴Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there.

¹⁴به این جهت برادران فوراً پولُس را به ساحل بحیره فرستادند و سیلاس و تیموتاوس هر دو در همانجا ماندند.

¹⁵But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed.

¹⁵همراهان پولُس او را تا شهر آتن همراهی کردند. سپس پولُس به آنها امر کرد که به بیریه باز گردند و هر چه زودتر سیلاس و تیموتاوس را پیش او بفرستند.

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.

¹⁶پولُس وقتی در آتن در انتظار سیلاس و تیموتاوس بود، از اینکه شهر را آن طور پُر از بت می دید عمیقاً متأثر شد.

¹⁷So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him.

¹⁷و به این دلیل در کنیسه با یهودیان و خدا پرستان و هر روز در میدان شهر با رهگذران به صحبت می پرداخت.

¹⁸Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also TR omits “also” were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁸عده ای از فلسفه دانان اپیکوری و رواقی به او برخورد کردند و با عقایدش به مخالفت پرداختند. بعضی از آن ها می گفتند: «این یاوه گو چه می خواهد بگوید؟» دیگران می گفتند: «گویا مبلغ خدایان بیگانه است.» (زیرا مژدۀ عیسی و رستاخیز را بشارت می داد.)

¹⁹They took hold of him, and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by you?

¹⁹پس او را گرفته به شورای کوه مریخ بردند و گفتند: «ممکن است بدانیم این تعالیم تازه ای که تو پیشنهاد می کنی چیست؟

²⁰For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.”

²⁰سخنان تو به گوش ما عجیب می آید. ما می خواهیم معنی آن بفهمیم.»

²¹Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

²¹(آتنی ها و خارجی های ساکن آنجا همه وقت خود را صرف گفت و شنود در خصوص عقاید تازه می کردند.)

²²Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things.

²²پس پولُس در میان «شورای کوه مریخ» برخاست و فرمود: «ای مردم شهر آتن، من می دانم که شما در کلیه امور دینی بسیار دقیق و باریک بین هستید

²³For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you.

²³زیرا وقتی در شهر شما می گشتم و معبودهای شما را مشاهده می کردم، به قربانگاهی رسیدم که بر آن نوشته شده بود: «تقدیم به خدای ناشناخته.» من همان کسی را که شما می پرستید اما نمی شناسید به شما اعلام می کنم.

²⁴The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands,

²⁴آن خدائی که دنیا و آنچه را در آن است آفرید و صاحب آسمان و زمین است، در معابد ساخته شده به دست انسان ساکن نیست

²⁵neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.

²⁵و به چیزی که آدمیان با دست های خود برای او فراهم نمایند نیازی ندارد، زیرا خدا است که نفس و زندگی و همه چیز را به جمیع آدمیان می بخشد.

²⁶He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings,

²⁶او تمام مردم را از نسل یک انسان آفرید تا در تمام سطح زمین ساکن شوند و برای آنها اوقاتی مقرر فرمود و برای بود و باش شان حدودی معین کرد

²⁷that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

²⁷تا خدا را بجویند و کورکورانه پی او نگردند تا شاید او را بیابند و حال آنکه او از هیچ یک از ما دور نیست،

²⁸‘For in him we live, and move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’

²⁸«زیرا در او زندگی می کنیم و در او حرکت و هستی داریم.» چنانکه بعضی از شاعران خود تان گفته اند:«ما نیز فرزندان او هستیم.»

²⁹Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.

²⁹پس چون همۀ ما فرزندان خدا هستیم، نباید گمان کنیم که ذات خدایی مانند پیکره ای از طلا و نقره و سنگ است که با هنر و مهارت آدمی تراشیده می شود.

³⁰The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent,

³⁰خدا بر دوران جهالت چشم پوشیده است، اما اکنون در همه جا بشر را امر به توبه می فرماید،

³¹because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

³¹زیرا روزی را معین فرمود که جهان را با راستی و درستی بوسیلۀ شخصی که برگزیده خود اوست داوری فرماید و برای اثبات این حقیقت او را پس از مرگ زنده کرد.»

³²Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.”

³²وقتی این مطلب را در خصوص رستاخیز مردگان شنیدند، عده ای او را مسخره کردند ولی عده ای گفتند: «خوب، دربارۀ این چیز ها در فرصت دیگر به سخن تو گوش خواهیم داد.»

³³Thus Paul went out from among them.

³³به این ترتیب پولُس شورا را ترک کرد.چند نفر از جمله دیونیسوس که عضو آن شورا بود و زنی به نام دامرس و چند تن دیگر به او گرویدند و ایمان آوردند.

³⁴But certain men joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴چند نفر از جمله دیونیسوس که عضو آن شورا بود و زنی به نام دامرس و چند تن دیگر به او گرویدند و ایمان آوردند.
