¹Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day.”

¹پولُس با دقت به اعضای شورا نگاه کرد و گفت: «ای برادران، من تا به امروز در حضور خدا با وجدانی پاک زندگی کرده ام.»

²The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

²دراین هنگام کاهن اعظم، حنانیا، به کسانی که در کنار پولُس ایستاده بودند، امر کرد که به دهانش مشت بزنند.

³Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”

³پولُس به او گفت: «ای دیوار سفید شده، خدا ترا خواهد زد. تو آنجا نشسته ای که مطابق شریعت در مورد من قضاوت نمایی و حالا بر خلاف آن امر می کنی که مرا بزنند.»

⁴Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”

⁴حاضران گفتند: «به کاهن اعظم خدا اهانت می کنی؟»

⁵Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’” Exodus 22:28

⁵پولُس گفت: «ای برادران، من نمی دانستم که او کاهن اعظم است. می دانم که تورات می فرماید: «به پیشوای قوم خود ناسزا نگو.»»

⁶But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”

⁶وقتی پولُس فهمید، که بعضی از آنها صدوقی و بعضی فریسی هستند با صدای بلند گفت: «ای برادران، من فریسی و فریسی زاده ام و مرا به خاطر ایمان و امید به رستاخیز مردگان در اینجا محاکمه می کنند.»

⁷When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

⁷با این سخن میان فریسی ها و صَدوقی ها اختلاف افتاد و مردم به دو دسته تقسیم شدند.

⁸For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.

⁸(صَدوقی ها منکر روز قیامت و وجود فرشته یا روح هستند ولی، فریسی ها به وجود اینها عقیده دارند.)

⁹A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”

⁹سر و صدای زیادی در مجلس بلند شد و چند نفر از علمای فرقۀ فریسی برخاسته گفتند: «ما در این مرد هیچ تقصیری نمی بینم. از کجا معلوم است که روح یا فرشته ای با او سخن نگفته باشد.»

¹⁰When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks.

¹⁰اختلاف زیادتر شد و قوماندان از ترس اینکه مبادا پولُس را تکه تکه کنند، فرمان داد عساکر به مجلس داخل شوند و پولُس را از میان جمعیت خارج ساخته و به قشله ببرند.

¹¹The following night, the Lord stood by him, and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”

¹¹در شب همان روز خداوند به پولُس ظاهر شد و فرمود: «دل قوی دار، چون همان طور که در اورشلیم دربارۀ من شهادت دادی در روم نیز باید چنان کنی.»

¹²When it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

¹²وقتی روز شد بعضی از یهودیان دور هم جمع شدند و سوگند یاد کردند، که تا پولُس را نکشند بهیچ خوردنی و یا نوشیدنی لب نزنند.

¹³There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.

¹³در این دسیسه بیش از چهل نفر شرکت داشتند.

¹⁴They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

¹⁴آنها پیش سران کاهنان و بزرگان رفتند و گفتند: «ما سوگند خورده ایم تا پولُس را نکشیم لب به غذا نزنیم.

¹⁵Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

¹⁵بنابراین شما و اعضای شورا به بهانۀ اینکه می خواهید در سوابق پولُس تحقیقات بیشتری نمائید، از قوماندان تقاضا کنید او را فردا پیش شما بیاورد. ما ترتیبی داده ایم که او را پیش از اینکه به اینجا برسد بکشیم.»

¹⁶But Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.

¹⁶اما خواهرزادۀ پولُس از این دسیسه با خبر شد و به قشله رفت و پولُس را خبر داد.

¹⁷Paul summoned one of the centurions, and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”

¹⁷پولُس یکی از صاحب منصبان را صدا زده گفت: «این جوان را پیش قوماندان ببر، می خواهد موضوعی را به عرض او برساند.»

¹⁸So he took him, and brought him to the commanding officer, and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to tell you.”

¹⁸صاحب منصب او را پیش قوماندان برد و به او گفت: «پولُس زندانی بدنبال من فرستاد و تقاضا کرد که این جوان را پیش شما بیاورم. او می خواهد موضوعی را به عرض برساند.»

¹⁹The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”

¹⁹قوماندان دست او را گرفته به کناری کشید و محرمانه از او پرسید: «چه می خواهی بگویی؟»

²⁰He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.

²⁰او گفت: «یهودیان نقشه کشیده اند که از شما تقاضا نمایند پولُس را فردا به شورا ببرید. بهانه آنها این است که می خواهند در مورد او اطلاعات دقیقتری به دست آورند.

²¹Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”

²¹به حرفهای آنها توجه نکنید، زیرا بیش از چهل نفر از ایشان در کمین او نشسته اند و قسم خورده اند که تا او را نکشند چیزی نخورند و ننوشند. آنها اکنون حاضر و آماده هستند و فقط در انتظار موافقت شما می باشند.»

²²So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”

²²به این ترتیب قوماندان آن جوان را رخصت کرد و به او اخطار نمود، که نباید از اطلاعاتی که در اختیار او گذاشته است کسی با خبر شود.

²³He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen, and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night about 9:00 PM .”

²³سپس قوماندان دو نفر صاحب منصب را صدا زد و به آن ها گفت: «دو صد عسکر پیاده و هفتاد سواره نظام و دو صد نیزه دار آماده کنید تا امشب ساعت نُه به قیصریه بروند.

²⁴He asked them to provide animals, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.

²⁴و چند اسپ برای پولُس حاضر کنید تا به این وسیله او را سالم به فِلیکسِ والی تحویل دهید.»

²⁵He wrote a letter like this:

²⁵او نامه ای هم به این مضمون نوشت:

²⁶“Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.

²⁶«کلودیوس لیسیاس به جناب والی فِلیکس سلام می رساند.

²⁷“This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.

²⁷این مرد را یهودیان گرفته اند و قصد داشتند او را بکشند، اما وقتی فهمیدم که او یک نفر رومی است من با عساکر خود به آنجا رفته او را از چنگ ایشان بیرون آوردم

²⁸Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.

²⁸و از آنجا که می خواستم علت تهمت او را بفهمم او را به شورای ایشان بردم.

²⁹I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.

²⁹اما متوجه شدم که موضوع مربوط به اختلاف عقیدۀ آن ها در خصوص شریعت خود شان است و او کاری که مستوجب اعدام یا حبس باشد نکرده است.

³⁰When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”

³⁰پس وقتی فهمیدم که آن ها در صدد سوء قصد نسبت به جان او هستند، فوراً او را پیش شما فرستادم و به مدعیان او نیز امر کرده ام، که دعوی خود را در پیشگاه شما به عرض برسانند.»

³¹So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.

³¹عساکر مطابق اوامری که گرفته بودند، پولُس را تحویل گرفته و او را شبانه به انتیپاتریس رسانیدند.

³²But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.

³²فردای آن روز همه بجز سوارانی که پولُس را تا به مقصد همراهی می کردند به قشله برگشتند.

³³When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.

³³سواران به وقت رسیدن به قیصریه نامۀ مذکور را به والی تقدیم نموده و پولُس را به او تحویل دادند.

³⁴When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,

³⁴والی وقتی نامه را خواند، از پولُس پرسید که اهل کدام ولایت است و چون فهمید که اهل قیلیقیه استبه او گفت: «وقتی مدعیان تو برسند به دفاع تو گوش خواهم داد.» و فرمان داد او را در قصر هیرودیس تحت نظر نگاه دارند.

³⁵“I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.

³⁵به او گفت: «وقتی مدعیان تو برسند به دفاع تو گوش خواهم داد.» و فرمان داد او را در قصر هیرودیس تحت نظر نگاه دارند.
