¹The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

¹آنگاه کاهن اعظم پرسید: «آیا اینها راست می گویند؟»

²He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

²استیفان جواب داد: «ای برادران و ای پدران، توجه بفرمائید، خدای پُر جلال به پدر ما ابراهیم در وقتی که در بین النهرین سکونت داشت، یعنی پیش از مهاجرت به حَران ظاهر شد

³and said to him, ‘Get out of your land, and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’ Genesis 12:1

³و به او فرمود: «وطن خود و خویشاوندانت را ترک کن و به سرزمینی که به تو نشان می دهم برو.»

⁴Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land, where you are now living.

⁴پس به این ترتیب از زمین کلدانیان رفت و مدتی در حَران ماند و پس از مرگ پدرش خدا او را از آنجا به سرزمینی که امروز شما در آن سکونت دارید آورد.

⁵He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he still had no child.

⁵خدا حتی یک وجب از آن سرزمین را به ابراهیم نداد. اما در همان وقت که او هنوز اولاد نداشت به او قول داد، که او و بعد از او اولاده اش را مالک آن زمین بگرداند.

⁶God spoke in this way: that his seed would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

⁶پس خدا به این طریق به ابراهیم فرمود که: «اولادۀ او مانند بیگانگان در یک سرزمین بیگانه زندگی خواهند کرد و مدت چهارصد سال در بندگی و ظلم بسر خواهند برد.»

⁷‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that will they come out, and serve me in this place.’ Genesis 15:13-14

⁷و خدا فرمود: «اما من از آن ملتی که قوم من بردگان آن ها خواهند شد باز خواست خواهم کرد و بعد از آن آنها آزاد خواهند شد و مرا در همین مکان عبادت خواهند کرد.»

⁸He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

⁸در همین زمان خدا سنت را به عنوان نشانۀ پیمان خود به ابراهیم عطا کرد و به این ترتیب پس از تولد اسحاق او را در روز هشتم سنت کرد و اسحاق، یعقوب را سنت کرد و یعقوب، دوازده پسر خود را که بعد ها هر کدام پدر یک طایفۀ اسرائیل شد.

⁹“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him,

⁹فرزندان یعقوب از روی بدبینی یوسف را به بردگی در مصر فروختند، اما خدا با او بود

¹⁰and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁰و او را از تمام زحماتش رهانید و به او توفیق و حکمت عطا فرمود به طوریکه مورد پسند فرعون فرمانروای مصر واقع شد و یوسف فرمانروای سرزمین مصر و دربار سلطنتی گردید.

¹¹Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.

¹¹در این هنگام در سرتاسر مصر و کنعان قحطی ای پدید آمد که باعث مصیبت بزرگی شد، به حدی که اجداد ما چیزی برای خوردن نیافتند.

¹²But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.

¹²وقتی یعقوب باخبر شد که در مصر غله پیدا می شود، پدران ما را برای اولین بار به آنجا فرستاد.

¹³On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s race was revealed to Pharaoh.

¹³در سفر دوم یوسف خود را به برادرانش شناسانید و فرعون از اصل و نسب یوسف با خبر شد.

¹⁴Joseph sent, and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.

¹⁴یوسف پدر خود یعقوب و تمام وابستگانش را که جمعاً هفتاد و پنج نفر بودند به مصر دعوت کرد

¹⁵Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, himself and our fathers,

¹⁵و به این ترتیب یعقوب به مصر قدم نهاد. عمر یعقوب و اجداد ما در آنجا بسر رسید

¹⁶and they were brought back to Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.

¹⁶و اجساد آنها را به شکیم بردند و در مقبره ای که ابراهیم از فرزند حمور به مبلغی خریده بود به خاک سپردند.

¹⁷“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁷و چون وقت آن نزدیک می شد که خدا به وعده ای که به ابراهیم داده بود عمل کند قوم ما در سرزمین مصر رشد کرد و تعداد آن افزایش یافت.

¹⁸until there arose a different king, who didn’t know Joseph.

¹⁸بالاخره پادشاه دیگری که یوسف را نمی شناخت به پادشاهی مصر رسید

¹⁹The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.

¹⁹و با اجداد ما با نیرنگ رفتار کرد و بر آنها ظلم بسیار روا داشت به حدی که ایشان را مجبور ساخت که نوزادان خود را سر راه بگذارند تا بمیرند.

²⁰At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.

²⁰در چنین روزگاری موسی که کودکی بسیار زیبا بود، به دنیا آمد. او مدت سه ماه در خانه پدر پرورش یافت

²¹When he was thrown out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and reared him as her own son.

²¹و وقتی او را سر راه گذاشتند دختر فرعون او را برداشت و همچون پسر خود تربیت نمود.

²²Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.

²²به این ترتیب موسی در تمام فرهنگ و معارف مصر تسلط یافت و در گفتار و کردار استعداد مخصوصی از خود نشان داد.

²³But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers The word for “brothers” here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” , the children of Israel.

²³همینکه موسی چهل ساله شد به فکرش رسید که به دیدن برادران اسرائیلی خود برود

²⁴Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.

²⁴و چون دید که مرد مصری با یکی از آنها بدرفتاری می کرد، به حمایت آن اسرائیلی برخاست و آن تجاوز کار مصری را به سزای عملش رسانید و او را کشت.

²⁵He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.

²⁵موسی گمان می کرد که هم نژادانش خواهند فهمید که خدا او را وسیلۀ نجات آنها قرار داده است، اما آنها نفهمیدند.

²⁶“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’

²⁶فردای آنروز به دو نفر اسرائیلی که با هم جنگ می کردند رسید و برای رفع اختلاف شان چنین گفت: «ای دوستان، شما برادر یکدیگرید. چرا با هم بدرفتاری می کنید؟»

²⁷But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁷مرد گناهکار او را عقب زد و گفت: «چه کسی تو را حاکم و قاضی ما ساخته است؟

²⁸Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ Exodus 2:14

²⁸میخواهی مرا هم مثل آن مصری که دیروز کشتی بکشی؟»

²⁹Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

²⁹موسی وقتی این جواب را شنید از آن سرزمین گریخت و در سرزمین مدیان آواره گشت و در آنجا صاحب دو پسر شد.

³⁰“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

³⁰پس از آنکه چهل سال سپری شد فرشته ای در بیابان های اطراف کوه سینا در بوته ای سوزان به موسی ظاهر شد.

³¹When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, a voice of the Lord came to him,

³¹موسی از دیدن آن منظره غرق حیرت گشت و هنگامی که نزدیک آمد تا بهتر ببیند، صدای خداوند به گوشش رسید که می گفت:

³²‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Exodus 3:6 Moses trembled, and dared not look.

³²«من خدای پدران تو، خدای ابراهیم و اسحاق و یعقوب هستم.» موسی ترسید و جرأت دیدن نداشت.

³³The Lord said to him, ‘Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.

³³سپس خداوند فرمود: «بوتهایت را بکش چون در مکان مقدسی ایستاده ای.

³⁴I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’ Exodus 3:5,7-8,10

³⁴البته آن ظلمی را که در مصر نسبت به قوم من می شود دیده و آه و ناله های شان را شنیده ام و برای نجات آنها آمده ام، برخیز ترا به مصر می فرستم.»

³⁵“This Moses, whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

³⁵بلی، همان موسی را که آنها رد کرده و به او گفته بودند: «چه کسی ترا حاکم و قاضی ما ساخته است؟» خدا به وسیلۀ فرشته ای که در بوته به او ظاهر شد حکمران و رهاننده گردانید.

³⁶This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

³⁶این موسی بود که با انجام معجزات و عجایب در مصر و در راه بحیرۀ احمر، اسرائیلی ها را به خارج از مصر هدایت کرد و مدت چهل سال در بیابان عهده دار رهبری آنها بود.

³⁷This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. TR adds “You shall listen to him.” ’ Deuteronomy 18:15

³⁷باز هم موسی بود که به اسرائیلی ها فرمود: «خدا از میان برادران شما پیامبری مانند من برای تان بر می انگیزد.»

³⁸This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living oracles to give to us,

³⁸و او بود که در اجتماع بنی اسرائیل در بیابان حضور داشت و با فرشته در کوه سینا و با اجداد ما صحبت کرد و پیام زندۀ خدا را دریافت نمود تا آنرا به ما نیز برساند.

³⁹to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

³⁹اما پدران ما رهبری او را نپذیرفتند و دست رد بر سینه اش زدند و آرزو داشتند به مصر برگردند

⁴⁰saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’ Exodus 32:1

⁴⁰و از هارون خواستند برای ایشان خدایانی بسازد که پیشاپیش آنها بروند و گفتند: «ما نمی دانیم بر سر این موسی که ما را از مصر بیرون آورد، چه آمده است.»

⁴¹They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.

⁴¹و در آن ایام گوساله ای ساختند و در برابر آن بت، قربانی های بسیار کردند و به افتخار ساخته و پرداخته دست خود جشنی برپا نمودند،

⁴²But God turned, and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, This idiom could also be translated “host of heaven,” or “angelic beings,” or “heavenly bodies.” as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

⁴²لیکن خدا از آنها روی گردان شد و ایشان را به پرستش ستارگان آسمانی واگذاشت. همانطور که در نوشته های پیغمبران آمده است:«ای خاندان اسرائیل آیا طی این چهل سال برای من در بیابان قربانی کرده اید یا هدیه ای تقدیم داشته اید؟

⁴³You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship. I will carry you away Amos 5:25-27 beyond Babylon.’

⁴³نخیر، بلکه شما خیمۀ مَلوک و پیکرۀ ستارۀ خدای خود رمغان را با خود می بردید، آن ها بت هایی بودند که برای پرستش ساخته بودید، پس شما را به آن سوی بابِل تبعید خواهم کرد.»

⁴⁴“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;

⁴⁴اجداد ما در بیابان خیمۀ شهادت داشتند و این خیمه همان چیزی است که خدا به موسی امر کرد که مطابق آن نمونه ای که قبلاً دیده بود بسازد.

⁴⁵which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,

⁴⁵پدران ما در نسل بعد در آن وقت که زمین کنعان را گرفته بودند، یعنی وقتی خدا اقوام دیگر را از سر راه شان بر می داشت، آن خیمه را به همراهی یوشع با خود آوردند و تا زمان داود آن خیمه در آنجا ماند.

⁴⁶who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁶داود مورد لطف خدا واقع شد و تقاضا نمود که به او اجازه داده شود خانه ای برای خدای یعقوب بسازد.

⁴⁷But Solomon built him a house.

⁴⁷ولی این سلیمان بود که خانه ای برای خدا ساخت.

⁴⁸However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,

⁴⁸اما خدای متعال در خانه های ساختۀ دست بشر ساکن نمی شود. چنانکه پیغمبر گفته است: خداوند می فرماید:

⁴⁹‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord; ‘or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁹«آسمان تخت شاهی من و زمین پای انداز من است. برای من چه خانه ای خواهید ساخت؟

⁵⁰Didn’t my hand make all these things?’ Isaiah 66:1-2

⁵⁰استراحتگاه من کجاست؟ آیا دست خود من جمیع این چیز ها را نساخته است؟»

⁵¹“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

⁵¹ای قوم گردنکش، ای کسانی که دلها و گوش های تان ختنه ناشده است! شما هم مثل اجداد خود همیشه بر ضد روح القدس مقاومت می کنید.

⁵²Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

⁵²کدام نبی ای از دست اجداد شما جفا ندید؟ آنها کسانی را که دربارۀ آمدن آن یکتای صادق پیشگویی می کردند کشتند، و در زمان ما، شما به خود او خیانت کردید و او را به قتل رساندید.

⁵³You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”

⁵³بلی، شما شریعت را که توسط فرشتگان به شما رسید قبول کردید اما از اطاعت آن دوری نمودید.»

⁵⁴Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

⁵⁴اعضای شورا از شنیدن این سخنان چنان به خشم آمدند که دندانهای خود را به هم می سائیدند.

⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁵اما استیفان پُر از روح القدس، به آسمان چشم دوخت و جلال خدا و عیسی را که در دست راست خدا ایستاده بود دید

⁵⁶and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

⁵⁶و گفت: «ببینید من هم اکنون آسمان را باز شده و پسر انسان را در دست راست خدا ایستاده می بینم.»

⁵⁷But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord.

⁵⁷در این هنگام فریاد بلندی از حاضران برخاست. آن ها گوشهای خود را گرفتند و به سوی او حمله کردند،

⁵⁸They threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

⁵⁸و او را از شهر بیرون برده، سنگسار نمودند. کسانی که بر ضد او شهادت داده بودند لباسهای خود را پیش پای جوانی به نام شائول گذاشتند.

⁵⁹They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

⁵⁹وقتی استیفان را سنگسار می کردند او با فریاد گفت: «ای عیسی، ای خداوند روح مرا بپذیر.»سپس به زانو افتاد و با صدای بلند گفت: «خداوندا، این گناه را به حساب ایشان نگذار.» این را گفت و جان سپرد.

⁶⁰He kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

⁶⁰سپس به زانو افتاد و با صدای بلند گفت: «خداوندا، این گناه را به حساب ایشان نگذار.» این را گفت و جان سپرد.
